May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A unique situation with graded reopening of automotive plants causes a skewed sales figures in all segments.

Mid -SUV becomes the best selling segment followed by the popular MPV . India’s best selling Car for May’20 was from this segment (Hyundai Creta). Also this segment shows the least negative growth

Following the MID -SUV, is the MPV segment. India’s second best selling car for May’20 – Ertiga was an MUV.

Premium Hatchback segment registered more dispatches than the Compact Hatchbacks too and the segment ranked 3rd!

Premium Sedan emerged as the worst performing segment for May’20. Only 39 Premium Sedans could be dispatched in May’20.

Best Sellers in their respective segments:

Elite i20 still has 878 dispatches. When will the switchover to the new i20 happen? Reports talk about the new model being launched in the festival season.

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Other than for statistical purposes, the sales for the corona period is not a pointer for success or failure of any model. So, this is one of the most un-interesting car sales data I was waiting for.

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Though its May 2020, the sales trend is straight out of 1990's. Amidst the Corona effect, lock downs, uncertainty with the jobs and income this is an expected trend. Guess June and July will also lead the same trend until the public and business are back to normal

The general quote "Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart" is missing this month. What we have in the top 20 sales is the cars which had 500+ sales

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Skoda superb sales number surprised me, looks like luxury sedan category customers doesn't care for this pandemic situation, they are just following their hearts.

Also, along with sales numbers it would be interesting to see how many showrooms each car brand has. i.e. Which can tell us no.of units sold per showroom.

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti - ~37%, Hyundai - ~19%, Mahindra - ~10%, and TATA - ~9%.

This is how I would prefer the market to be in the long-term with lesser dominance and better competition.

Also good to see two 5* rated cars in top 10 (Altroz, XUV300) and two with hopefully better build qualities (Creta, Seltos).

And a good month for Altroz despite the lockdown. Hope it can continue.

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting month.
Can someone throw some light as to how Skoda managed to sell 32 units of Octavia and 112 units of Kodiaq during the month of May.
I am assuming that the Octavia could be dispatches of VRS 245. But Kodiaq?

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I really hope this trend continues!
Super happy to see cars like the XUV3OO and Altroz in the top 10 list.
Atleast 30% of the 1,126 VW Polos are the new TSi versions dispatched to the dealers for demo and TD which means they sold somewhere around 700 copies to actual customers even in these tough times which is really good. Correct me if I am wrong

Re: May 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting to see that sales of entry level cars like Alto take a bigger hit than more expensive cars like Creta and Seltos. Perhaps due to the fact that entry level buyers would be more affected by the current economic crisis.

Also now with showrooms opening up again, I assume waiting times for Seltos, Creta and Hector may come down due to decrease in new bookings and potential cancellations amongst the already confirmed bookings.

VW still doing 1000+ polo dispatches. Really not bad for a 10'YO car.
