Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Rumours suggest that Toyota is planning to launch the updated Fortuner with a more potent engine in India sometime in early 2021.

The Fortuner facelift has already been introduced in the Southeast Asian markets. If rumours are to be believed, then the SUV could be offered with a diesel engine that churns out over 500 Nm of torque.

At present, the Fortuner comes with a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder diesel unit that puts out 175 BHP @ 3,400 rpm and a peak torque of 450 Nm @ 1,600-2,400 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The SUV is also available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but with lower peak torque of 420 Nm @ 1,400-2,600 rpm.

The updated Fortuner has already been spotted testing in India. It gets a redesigned exterior featuring a new grille, headlamps and bumpers. It also gets a redesigned rear fascia with new tail lamp clusters.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

I feel that Toyota would actually launch the Fortuner with the more powerful engine.

Only reason being the Gloster, taking away potential Toyota customers due to its more powerful engine (being one of the MANY reasons to choose Gloster over Fortuner).

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Since the 500Nm 2.8L engine is being sold in other countries already, there is no doubt that India will also get the same power and torque figures! That kind of torque will definitely make people who were lovers of the 3.2L endeavour move over. Along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto there is nothing that can beat the Fortuner it will continue crushing it’s competitors! Keeping my fingers crossed about the pricing, with the Gloster’s pricing I don’t think Toyota will be able to overprice it to a new level.

If Toyota updates their engine, I guess Ford will finally bring in their Bi-Turbo 2.0 engine. This will bring the Endeavor closer to the Toyota, with the Bi-Turbo churning out 360 NM.

It is the same 2.8 lit engine with a higher state of tune.

While this is a welcome move, if it happens, I am wary of the price hike this will come with! Going by Toyota's past record, they will definitely try and milk Toyota loyalists with a fat price hike on an already overpriced SUV, while continuing to skimp on key features like rear-diff lock, which is a standard on 4x4 variants for their global models.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

They should have done this right from the get-go and have had a slightly lower price for the 450Nm tune along with the higher tune as a flagship version. Indians sure love their variants.

Endeavour has done much to stay in the market like a new engine, full-LED headlamps, 10 speed AT with gear display, etc. Gloster is another ballgame altogether. Meanwhile, Toyota be like: Hehe, old SUV go vroom!

While 500Nm of torque could be the headline figure - this engine update could also push the on road prices above 50 lakhs.

Fortuner is already tops out at 46L onroad in cities like Bangalore. With increased competition from the likes of Endeavour and Gloster - hope Toyota doesn't let the prices cross the mental barrier of 50!

If they could, they would sell the Fortuner with 3 wheels, no steering and no A/C for 80 lacs and then do the Porsche strategy to earn through accessories. Their prices are going through the roof (even for the used market). However, they can't always just ride the wave of "reliability" forever like Maruti. Sometime, someone will just hurt their sales really bad and I think that someone is Gloster (going by the number of Kias and MGs plying the roads)

The TRd 4X4 AT costs 46L in Bangalore but the TRd variants are limited editions limited to not more than 500 units. We would have got the Fortuner this year ending but Toyota decided to bring the TRd limited edition. The regular 4X4 AT costs 43L in Bangalore, this new facelifted fortuner 4X4 AT will not cross 44.5L in Bangalore is what I feel.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Ill be the first to admit, i love toyotas & the fact that the engine update is most likely due to the new Gloster.

However, i dont think MG will be making any significant inroads into Toyotas core market. You have to remember that the toyota buyer is someone who values peace of mind over anything else. No amount of "features" or "technology" or "space" would make a dent in a dent in that demographic. The endeavor is a classic example of this. On paper, It is better than the fortuner in every measurable parameter. Yet, here we are.

But at the end of the day, more competition the better for consumers like us !

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Is this update because of the competition from MG Gloster? Glad that Toyota is realising it.

OT: Although Ford has given up on India officially with its lazy and lacklustre release of Endeavour Sport or single turbo 2.0 engine, I hope it acts on this competition and releases bi-turbo 2.0. As said in the official review, if not for its 10 speed auto, the engine is puny for a car that size.

Re: Rumour: Toyota Fortuner with 500+ Nm torque coming in 2021

Toyota should definitely get the 2.8 litre engine in the higher tune to India.
This engine would help the Fortuner have class best BHP and torque figures.
Ford would be compelled to get the bi-turbo engine to India to give it a leg up.
Apple Carplay and android auto + best power and torque figures
would make it the best selling SUV.

Warm regards.

Ford's Bi-Turbo engine is actually 213PS/500Nm, which will make it equal to Toyota on torque figures if they launch the new fortuner with updated engine. The updated engine specs for Toyota's 2.8 engine is 204PS/500Nm for international markets. Will have to wait and see whether the BS6 norms will force Toyota to reduce the engine specs.
Also the updated engine maybe available only with AT box as the torque for MT box is already limited to 420Nm.

Ford Single Turbo engine specs is 180PS/420Nm for global markets but detuned to 170PS/420Nm for India coz of BS6 norms.

If they are breaking the mental barrier of 500 Nm, they'll surely break the barrier of price too. It's a bittersweet moment.
