Absoulutely correct. SUV and driving enthusiast don't go hand in hand.

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

An example has been set by M/s Sequel Ford, a Ford dealer at Nagpur, who have initiated refund for the 350 pending car bookings and have also undertaken to reinstate the dealership employees with new jobs in their other firms. At this juncture just after the umpteen lock downs and dealership closures plus the slowdown in car sales during 2019-20- part of 2021, when things were looking up, the D-day was announced by Ford India. And with the festival season approaching, we can just sense the worst sense of trauma, mental and financial insecurity sensed by every employee, who had returned to work.

That's good going for the stakeholders and praiseworthy of M/s Sequel Ford, if true and going by the news report.

Quote:

Nagpur: Following American company Ford’s decision to cease its car manufacturing in India, Sequel Ford — Nagpur’s prominent car outlet — has started returning booking amounts for around 350+ vehicles. Sequel Ford has also initiated a drive to shift its employees to other organizations so that they won’t have to grapple for livelihood.

Ford’s decision to stop production in India had come as a big blow to not only its employees but also to its loyal customers. And the Second Capital of the State is certainly not an exception!

In Nagpur region, some are devastated by the Ford’s departure, while some want to capitalize the situation to gain some extra benefit during purchase of new cars. Though customers are unsure about the resale value and spare parts, Sequel Ford has assured all the assistance to its customers.

Tata Motors team meets Tamil Nadu CM, whether vehicle manufacturing will follow remains to be seen especially when speculation is rife about a buyer for Ford.

Quote:
There is no indication what transpired at the meeting though it is happening at a time when the Tamil Nadu government is planning to do its bit in helping Ford find a buyer for its Maraimalainagar plant near Chennai

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

Ford Will Build 4 Factories in a Big Electric Vehicle Push.

This seems to be the fundamental driver for the massive portfolio rationalization going on. Does Ford (and others) invest its energy and resources in protecting its future in its core markets, or does it keep throwing money on small, long term bets that show no signs of turning profitable in the foreseeable future. Staying on would also mean investing in technologies and platforms that are no longer 'strategic'.

The answer seems to be obvious. Ford also knows the electric capabilities it will build will not be easily marketable in India (given the purchasing power limits, which also drives the lack of investment in the electric ecosystem), and that at least for the medium term, Ford is better off tactically licensing off-the-shelf technologies to Indian operators than running a full Indian operation.

Completely agree with this statement. US manufacturers like Ford and GM do not have products that are tailor fit for our market in the volume segments. It's not that they can't, it's just that it is not worth the trouble developing them with low margins especially when the auto industry and govt regulators are kicking out the ICE doors this decade. They could have introduced stop gap products from their international stable in the 15 - 40 L segment but long term with their manufacturing over-capacity (commissioned hastily when developing markets were seen as key to growth) it would not work out so well. They are better off investing on new EV platforms and their home markets.

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

Bit late to the party!

Sad to see that Ford is exiting from the country and Endeavour is the car, which I'll missing it badly due to its butch looks and in fact, I feel Endeavour is a better car than Fortuner in all aspects including ride quality, which is a big minus in Fortuner.

The day when Ford exit news came out, I was at my friend's house and the same friend owns a 2013 1st gen facelift Figo Titanium Petrol in rare yellow colour, and told him to sell it off as he won't get the resale in the future. But, since he got connected to the car much due to the driving dynamics and build quality (he always say that the build quality of his Figo is way better than newer Marutis), he told that he'll be retaining the Figo as well even if he buys a new car.

If possible there are lot of things TML can strike a deal with along with the dealers network. Probably their AT gearbox and probably Ford Diesel engines.

Ford Diesel engines are fuss free, balance durability and drive-ability, however only until the BS4. Cant say the same about BS6 1.5 TDCi mills plagued with DPF problems. Tata is better off retaining their inhouse diesel engine which offers better top end with a 6-speed manual.

They need Ford's automatic gearboxes and their 1.2L Dragon Petrol. Tatas 1.5 D engine is pretty good as it is, I don't see any significant benefits

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

A Ford employee relates his first rendezvous with Ford India in September 2009 and his reaction after a twelve year journey to the D-day on 09.09.2021.

Quote:

He remembers that October morning as the most important of his life. One month after Ford unveiled its new hatchback, Figo, in September 2009, 19-year-old Vijay Kumar waited in line with many others at the company’s factory on the outskirts of Chennai, nervous and fidgety. He was hungry, having arrived on a bus from his home town of Theni, tucked away in the hills over 500km kilometers away. The first question the interview panel asked him was if he had eaten. He told them he hadn’t, because he didn’t want to be late.

After testing his knowledge on the technicalities of automobiles, about the company, and the specifics about the entry level job he was applying for, the panel closed the interview. The last thing they told Kumar was that there was a nice canteen with free food, and he should eat before he headed home. “I loved that they cared,” said Kumar. Twelve years later, Kumar found out that Ford, the company that was his life for over a decade, would soon be shutting down. Via WhatsApp.

“I thought it was a fake message,” he said. “This is what our relationship has come down to? They couldn’t even inform us in person.” After his day shift which ended at 3.15pm, he gathered with his colleagues at the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) office, 1km from Ford’s plant. The sense of helplessness was universal.
