Ford was selling cars earlier too. Not sure when exactly (around Independence I am guessing).

They returned with a JV with M&M and started off with the Escort. The JV was just few years after it which it was a fully Ford owned company.

That is in a nutshell.

Ford EcoSport Production Resumes at Chennai Plant

Quote:
n a fresh development, Ford India has resumed production at its Chennai facility. While this news might please thousands of fans across the nation, it’s important to note that the manufacturing has been resumed simply to produce the last batch of export-spec Ford EcoSport SUV. The manufacturing operations came to a halt when several workers went on a strike on May 30. This was done to demand an improved severance package. However, the carmaker asserts that over 300 employees have given consent to resume operations.

Good to excellent cars, reasonably fair after sales service network, affordable spare parts prices and availability; topped off by bad, myopic management directions & policy.

A business school case study on what not to do when trying to make and sell cars in the Indian subcontinent.

Interesting 🤔 Ford having double thoughts?

Ford Cancels Chennai Plant Sale Deal With JSW Group

Is Ford having a rethink on its India exit strategy? The Amercian car company has cancelled a potential deal with the JSW group for its Chennai plant, after holding very advanced-stage discussions, said sources.

"The talks between Ford's headquarters in the US and the JSW group have collapsed abruptly, after the companies had been moving towards closing the deal. This is a sudden decision and may stem from Ford's desire to stay put in India from the manufacturing point of view. In fact, Ford has been looking to hire people in India once again in certain functions," one of the source said. "However, nothing can be said with certainty on the matter as yet. Ford is still evaluating, and has not taken a final decision on coming back."

Never too late to take the right decisions given how the Indian car market has evolved since Ford made their call in 2021.

Their Chennai factory is a legacy, marked the City as a car manufacturing hub in South though the City was known for Auto Components and Ancillaries even prior

Fingers crossed on how Ford treads their path from here. Hoping to see them back in the market.

Re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

I had felt that the exit decision was hasty, in 2021. They were working on a path to profit in 3 years and Mahindra pulled out of the planned JV.

They could have weathered this rough weather. Maybe bought out the Puma (crossover), with electric option. A good car could reverse the fortune of the company.
