re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

Looks like a few new Fords might still be up for grabs, at least in Assam.

I passed by the Chakrapani Ford showroom in Jorhat on 15 December and saw a Freestyle and an Aspire in it. Also went past the old TI Ford showroom at Silpukhuri, Guwahati two days later which had a new Figo and a blue Ecosport on display.

Have seen this full page ad in the paper multiple times since last week. Not sure what’s cooking here but seems to be a very good gesture from the company considering the exit.

Rode past my city's Ford dealer today and noticed that they have locked the main gate and taken down big name plate, Ford branding all over.
Not to mention, 4 white Endeavours that they had on display till last week are gone. All that remains now is a non-descript commercial building. So I guess this is one of 18 places that have closed down.

Was this only a showroom or was it a service centre as well ? All showrooms will be shut, it's the service centres that will continue.

Very few showrooms in key cities might stay on for the CBU operations.

One acquaintance of mine who has a Ford dealership told me that they have been offered such a good financial / compensatory package by Ford India, that most dealers have chosen not to complain. Ford also has signed a contract with them which ensures committed after sales service till 2026 minimum.
In fact, Ford's committment of not ditching their existing customers w.r.t. service, despite withdrawing manufacturing operations in the country, has earned them quite a bit of goodwill. Initially there had been some panic selling in the used car market, but of late the second hand market for Ford's have firmed up and models, particularly well maintained used Ecosport's, are fetching good prices on the used car forecourt.

Who knows? Maybe after 4 / 5 years Ford may have a change of heart and think of something again!

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

Ford's employees have issues with the compensation Ford India is offering and are struggling to demand an appropriate package, commensurate with the years of service completed and the number of years they could have worked for the company. Ford wants the issue to be settled by February 2022. It had employed 5300 employees, quite many of them now affected by the closure and who are now at the crossroads.

Quote:

"We have asked for compensation for completed and remaining years of service. The company is not agreeable for the same. The management has not indicated as to the compensation they are willing to pay to the workers," the union official said.

Majority of the workers are young and have about 25 years of service remaining before they retire and the compensation calculated on that basis will be a sizeable sum, is the management's view.

However, the parent company will be infusing funds in dollars and as per the exchange rate between dollar and the rupee the outgo for Ford India will not be much, the worker leader said.

Ford India had said more than 500 employees at the Sanand engine plant, which produces engines for export, and about 100 employees supporting parts distribution and customer service, also will continue to support Ford's business in India.

According to Ford India, about 4,000 employees are expected to be affected by its decision.

The workers at Ford India want the prospective buyer of the car plants to hire them.

Meanwhile, Ford India has declared a holiday for majority workers till January 27.

About 100-200 workers have been asked to report for work to make the spares for the aftermarket, the union leader said.
The last para is meaningful for the Ford owners who could be continuing to get spares for the valuable machines.

Yea, just that it was a disappointing review when it came the sound quality and the condition of the Ford Ikon used.

Not to forget the multiple wrong power figures and years mentioned by Sirish for the old gen Figo.
As a automobile journalist, stating wrong figures on a car show is surprising.

Have watched all the forgotten series he did before, but in this video, I felt he was somehow unsure of what he was talking about. He mentioned Figo was made specifically for India. But it wasn't as far as I know. It was only a retired old Gen Fiesta sold in the US that was rebadged as Figo in India.

In the book "American Icon: Alan Mullaly and the fight to save ford", the author Bryce Hoffman brags about how the discontinued Fiesta hatch was simply rebadged and was a smash hit in India.

But I would agree with one thing Sirish said in the video "The enthusiast market isn't small. If it were, Polo wouldn't have lasted so long"!

re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

^^ And Shirish Chandran’s gaffe’s continue in the second part as well. It’s baffling that an auto journalist of his stature would mention the old gen 1.4 TDCI while talking about Ecosport. The Ecosport always came with the new generation 1.5 TDCI from the very start. Someone should have pointed out the mistakes before releasing the videos on the net. Sadly, nobody double checks these days in today’s world of social media !!

Re: Ford stops manufacturing cars in India

Loved these series of Videos of Ford cars. These videos do give info on the Ford's Indian history.

In the Part2, Sirish goes on to say, "Ford came back to India in 1995 with 50:50 JV with Ford to make the Escort". Didnt really get this point.
