Re: Should one buy a Skoda Rapid or VW Vento today?

Hello BHPians,
I am a new member of this forum and this is my first post. I need advice on whether to buy a vento Highline right now. We will be replacing our aging Santro this year. I was hoping to get the vento before they stop production as I feel it has most of the things I would like in our next car, especially that TSI engine. For months, it wasn't in stock and I started considering the S-Cross instead. Now, suddenly I have been offered a manual Vento in carbon grey colour. I am confused whether to go ahead with the Vento or wait for the new S-cross.

While the Vento is old and now at the end of production, is there any confirmation that Maruti will bring the new S-cross to India? I was hoping they'd offer the new features and 6 airbags like they've done with the new Baleno. In that case I feel it'd be worth waiting for the s-cross. Virtus/Slavia are out of my budget which is 10l ex-showroom.

Kindly advise.

Re: Should one buy a Skoda Rapid or VW Vento today?

As per many reports and rumors, S-Cross would be coming to India this year, though it is not really sure when. S-Cross would most probably be equipped with the same powertrain and the 4 speed torque converter might be replaced with the new 6 speed unit. Also, as the Baleno received many new features including HUD, 360 degree cameras and most importantly, 6 airbags, it makes no sense for Maruti to not include these in the S-Cross as it is the flagship model sold by the company in India.

Vento makes a good bargain if you are able to get a very good deal on it. The model is 10+ years old and it would be soon discontinued. Though it is equipped with all the necessary features, it does not offer a feel good factor on the inside. The only thing that it trumps really well is driving and that VW build quality people appreciate. Also, you need to be aware of the fact that it would look old on the roads after the next 4-5 years. If this is your primary car, you might need to evaluate these cons of Vento seriously.

In simpler words,

S-Cross :
  • more space
  • more features
  • modern design
  • maruti reliability
  • better after sales

Vento :
  • better overall driving pleasure
  • better build quality and solidity

thanks @FrAgile for the suggestion. It was very helpful.

What sort of a discount should I realistically ask for? They're quoting Rs.11.3 lacs OTR.

I had recently checked with a VW salesperson for 2022 make Vento 1.0 TSI Highline manual. I was offered an onroad price of INR 11.20 lakhs @14% road tax and no freebies included. I think that translates to a discount of around INR 70-75k. The discount seems to be on the lower side, also only white and silver colour options available.

I did not persue this much as I was not too keen on buying.

I was quoted 10.7L on road for highline MT. White, silver and grey color options were available. I too didn't follow or budge much as I was not much interested in purchasing Vento after the launch of Slavia. There might be a little scope for better discounts, though not any major ones, on 8th March once the Virtus is unveiled.

Also, I am not sure how VW is managing the stock of Vento, but when I went to see Kushaq in showroom, in December end, I randomly asked about the rapid matte edition. The sales person offered a flat 2L discount on ex showroom without any bargain or keen interest. Point being, there is a scope of huge discounts once the Vento is officially discontinued but there is a fair enough chance that you won't be able to grab one, or might have to enquire many dealerships in NCR for leftover inventory.

Hello,

The Vento is a great car to own, and has (touchwood) never given us gearbox problems. I don't think spares et.al should be an issue because the 1.0L engine is continuing in the Slavia and Virtus as well + with most of the parts being shared with the Polo 6R, it should be fine.
Drivability and handling-wise, I don't think the S-Cross can come close to the Vento.

I'd recommend you to think of what your priorities are, whether practicality, drivability, reliability etc. and the amount of time you can wait for. The S-Cross' launch is just rumors at the moment with no official confirmation.

FrAgile has put how you should choose based on your priorities very clearly.

Hope this helps!
