Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I had just turned 24 when I bought my first car with own money - it was a red M800. Coming from a typical middle class family, owning a car then considered luxury. Going through the loan formalities was a 'pleasure'... the car itself served me well for about a decade.

I then bought a used Etios Liva V that had barely 1.2K on the odometer. Needless to say - Toyota cars are simply a JOY to own. Comfortable, spacious, fantastic ride quality, acceptable performance, hassle-free ownership...what more can one ask?
However, i sold it after 3 memorable years, the main reason being the manual transmission. Don't get me wrong here - the gear shifts were smooth and clutch was as good as new, however, the legendary Bangalore traffic forced me to change. I started feeling pain in left-leg, cramping feet, left shoulder pain - all this is not due to Etios Liva, it's a result of driving manual transmission vehicles for 15+ years.

I was very angry with Toyota - why on earth do you discontinue great products like Etios, Liva, Yaris, and, to rub salt on wounds, you rebadge Maruti cars? Why couldn't improvements/new generations be introduced as per market needs? Why were fantastic products stopped? Owners of Toyota may agree - once you own it, it's extremely difficult to move away....

Anyway, as a helpless customer who could not find suitable match from Toyota, i jumped to Honda - bought the Jazz V CVT (used cars). Having driven it over 3k+ kilometers, i strongly feel that Jazz CVT is a highly underrated car. Plan to pen an ownership review shortly...

Bought my first car in 2019 when I was just 22. Saved enough in the first few months of my job to buy a second hand Honda City in red with cool alloys, wide tyres and that sweet revving 1.5 ivtec. Over 30,000 km and numerous road trips later, it's never let me down.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first Car when i was 29 - a pre owned 2012 Honda Brio V MT.
Though i loved every bit of it , sold it off in less than 3 years as i got frustrated with the deadly combo of city traffic + Manual transmission and to make it worse , Honda service experience !

Bought my first car - a pre owned josh machine - The legendary Ikon 1.6, when I was 25. What a car! The handling, the diesel like low end torque and that sweet telepathic hydraulic steering attributed to a pure mechanical driving experience!

Recently bought a Sonet Diesel automatic and I'm 29. Fun to drive in its own way, I'm loving the torque, the smooth gearbox and and the pampering features!

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

33 Years

Got my very first classique Skoda Rapid last year. Fully financed by me and registered in my name.

Have completed 20000 KMS in a year with multiple cross country runs viz. Blr -> Del -> Blr via multiple routes.

Here is a pic I took during the Blr -> Del drive via Mumbai. The pic was taken near Gateway of India.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first car RENAULT KWID in 2019 at the age of 30. I decided for it because it was the cheapest yet fuel efficient and better looking car in the country. Another reason was that it was a tradition in my family to only buy cars from companies which may exit at any time in India My father had fiat Padmini, Daewoo Matiz and Chevrolet beat Diesel followed by his son Renault.

Prior to four wheeler, I also bought TVS Apache 160 and Bajaj Dominar in 2014 and 2017 respectively. Eventually when dominar came I had to sell off my Apache due to parking space crunch (I live in Delhi, You know )

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

A 2003 registered Indica Vista V2 bought in 2006. My first - in fact the first car in our family bought with my own money.

This car served us very well for 7 years when I replaced it with the Vista D90 in 2013 which I use today.

When I was buying my first car in the US this was my dream car as student and it’s fastest in it’s segment with a 1.0L Turbo and DCT option.

I ended up buying a used, cheap 2004 Focus SE with ditto 160k miles on the odometer

Keep revving!

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I was 26 and bought a two year old Honda City 2010. I was fortunate to be able to afford a car of this segment as my first car.
I still have it and love driving it. This one's a keeper.

Here's the ownership thread i wrote earlier this year.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Bought my first car with my own money when I was 32. I had joined Maruti driving school, and after completing the training on 10th day, went straight to the showroom to pick up the car. I was absolutely nervous during its first drive from the showroom to our home.

Here is the first day pic:

Being on a rented place in an individual house, I did not had the secure parking, so, I would come out to our balcony on first floor multiple times during the day to check if she is still there or not. Somehow, the fear was there that it will get stolen

Here's is one pic from one such balcony visit

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first car at the age of 33 and bought it with my own money. I didn't want to be tied down by EMIs and hence was looking in the pre-owned segment. I didn't know much about cars at that time, and I would have been happy with just about any car. My father convinced me to go for a sedan, and then we came upon someone selling two cars - a Chevrolet Cruze and a Toyota Corolla Altis, both of them in white colour, of similar age and similar kilometers run with the Cruze being expensive by Rs. 1.00 lakhs.

It was a head over heart decision, and even though I wanted to go for the Cruze, which I had fancied since I was a teenager, I decided to go for the Altis, having heard legends of its reliability. And I must say, The car has never made me regret my choice. The only problem with this decision is that the car has now spoiled me and I don't know how I can replace her and with which car.

In the 3 years that I have been driving her, I have covered more than 40000 kilometers and every single one of those kilometers has been a real joy.

The pictures here are from about a month or so ago, whereas the last picture is from the day she arrived.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Must say, a nostalgic thread. Brings back a lot of memories.

Well, I bought my first car, a Skoda Rapid Rider 1.0 TSI MT on 10th July 2020 at the age of 28 (on bank loan ofcourse). Since I work for a public sector bank, obtaining a loan was not an issue for me. But yes, my younger brother did help me with the down-payment since he wanted my loan amount to be as low as possible. (Avoid loan for a depreciating asset theory).

However, in my 1.5 years + ownership, didn't get a chance to drive it much. Barely driven 7.5k kms till date. My beater car is a 11.5 years old VW Polo 1.2 MPI MT Highline variant that my parents bought me during my 2nd year at college and I drive that daily. So my first car Skoda Rapid is driven barely once in a week/2 weeks.

Some pics of my car..

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Very nice thread.
My first car was Hyundai Santro which my Dad sponsored. Second is from the proceedings of sold Santro PLUS my money was Hyundai Getz 1.5 CRDi (a true pocket rocket at Rs 6.25 lacs in 2008)
Well, first car with my own money is my current 2016 Vento TSI Highline. Total paid OTR Bombay was Rs12.8lacs. It has clocked over 45k kms and for the last 6 years, I have myself cleaned and dressed its interior. All my cars were and is very special to me.
