Rumour: Toyota developing new SUV for India; plans 3rd factory

According to a media report, Toyota is developing a new SUV for the Indian market. The carmaker is also said to be planning to set up a third manufacturing plant in the country.

Rumour: Toyota developing new SUV for India; plans 3rd factory-2022toyotaurbancruiserhyryder05-1.jpg

The report states that the new SUV, details of which, are still unknown, will be launched in the Indian market in early 2026. It would be the anchor product for the upcoming factory. Toyota is looking at an initial capacity of 80,000-1,20,000 units per year, which could be expanded to 2,00,000 units.

Toyota has seen an increase in its domestic sales since it joined hands with Suzuki Motor. The Glanza and Urban Cruiser Hyryder account for 40% of Toyota's India sales.

It is said that about two-thirds of Toyota's current production capacity is used by Maruti Suzuki to build vehicles for both brands. The new plant would expand the carmaker's existing manufacturing capacity of 4,00,000 units by 30%.

There has been no official word regarding the latest reports from Toyota yet.

Good times ahead for Toyota in India and it shows in the sales charts as well. The partnership with Maruti Suzuki is really doing wonders for Toyota and it shows, Maruti on the other hand has also benefitted greatly by getting the Hybrid technology and a few rebadged models in International markets as well.

Re: Rumour: Toyota developing new SUV for India; plans 3rd factory

Good to see Toyota getting back on track in the Indian market, albeit with Maruti Suzuki's help, their own products other than the Innova and Fortuner have failed to sustain in the market and perhaps the partnership with Suzuki will change that, now the Hyryder is selling well (although its basically a Maruti on the inside, with a Hybrid engine, or essentially a Maruti in the non-hybrid model) and the Glanza (rebadged Baleno) is doing good numbers as well. Soon, the rebadged Fronx will also make its way to the Toyota lineup and will help further improve sales, with its own Fortuner, Hycross, and Crysta doing good numbers, it's certainly good times ahead for Toyota.

Re: Rumour: Toyota developing new SUV for India; plans 3rd factory

This should've been done atleast a decade ago, especially considering the relative investment is an insignificant amount to them.

Despite knowing that the Indian consumer pays well, Toyota is late to expand its presence in the Indian market while new players have entered & gained huge market share & recovered their investments many times over.

Not sure if they see Diesel as a viable option anymore, so I'm guessing the new factories will build products with Ethanol blended flex-fuel (& maybe Toyota's hybrid powertrains) for the mass market here. Let's see.

Re: Rumour: Toyota developing new SUV for India; plans 3rd factory

Wonder which is the rumoured SUV.

The stretched Corolla Cross? Most likely

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...s-india-2.html (Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India)

The 500D SUV below the Fortuner? Pray it is

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/inter...-fortuner.html (Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner)

Decided to locally assemble the Rav4? Least likely

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...bu-import.html (Toyota RAV4 coming to India as a CBU import)

Just a rebadged Maruti Worst case, but can't be since it wouldn't have to wait till 2026.

I hope it is the Toyota Mini LandCruiser that is setting the Internet on fire…

https://www.drive.com.au/news/toyota...t-year-report/

Guess I will end up selling my Jimny then - with a width of 1860mm should beat it fair and square in the interior comfort department.

The gap between Hyryder and Fortuner is huge. While Innova versions do exist, that's a different market segment. So something alongside Innova or just above that would be ideal. Something which can compete with the likes of Tucson or Kodiaq.

Current hottest segment is around the 25-35L bracket. Doubt they would go to Tiguan territory because it might as well be dead on arrival. The hilux fiasco proves that the public isn’t willing to pay any price just because of the Toyota badge.

The new SUV is likely to rival Mahindra's XUV700.

- Looking to offer something between the Hyryder compact SUV and the Hycross MPV in India
- New mid-size SUV in the works, codenamed 340D.
- The new SUV is due to launch in 2026 and could likely be exported to other right-hand-drive markets from India with a production target of 60,000 units a year.
-Toyota is also considering a luxurious SUV above Fortuner and below Land Cruiser for India.

So looks like it is the stretched Corolla Cross after all. And not the 500D SUV.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...oss-india.html (Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India)

Though wonder why they are taking 3-4 years for what is basically a LWB version of an existing car, given that the platform and engine is already here in India in the Hycross.

The SUV positioned above the Fortuner and below the Landcruiser is no doubt the next gen Prado. What else? And fat chance that they are even thinking of assembling it here like the reports say. Will be imported as CBU from Japan and priced at 1.5 crores for sure.

Maybe we will get lucky and they will bring in a highlander or a stretched RAV4. If it is the corolla cross, hopefully I can retrofit the fully digital cluster into my Hycross. The new prado is pretty decent with radical styling changes but at that price range you are going up against the GLS and X7 which is a whole another league.

I am sure the digital cluster will not be part of the Corolla Cross sold in India because the car is being extended as a 7 seater only for the Indian market or a few more SE Asia markets at best. Very likely that we’ll see the same instrument cluster as the HyCross.

And similarly the Corolla Cross in International markets gets 3 electric motors coupled with the 2.0L petrol engine, one at the rear axle to make it an AWD.

Now how can a car that is going to be placed between the HyRyder and HyCross have 3 electric motors while the HyCross itself has only one motor at a price below the HyCross? So Toyota will have to cut down on the electric motors to keep the same engine + electric motor like the HyCross to keep costs in check… Fingers crossed Toyota somehow provides it with an AWD to take on the XUV7OO Diesel AWD.

I really hope it’s the Highlander/Kluger, what Toyota needs is a Hybrid SUV above the Fortuner.

Stretched RAV4? by the same guys who were mulling to bring the RAV4 at 60 lakhs? Who are we kidding. They would want to bring in the Corolla Cross as it shares the same platform and engines with the Hycross. The Highlander or RAV4 would be on the TNGA-K (Camry) platform and would cross 50 lakhs for sure.

Thanks for letting me know of the new digital instrument cluster in the Corolla Cross. Last time I saw it had the same for sake digital cluster as the Hycross. Maps on the instrument cluster at last!!!

I guess they would be aiming the Prado at the Defender market. Whatver CBU allocation they throw at the Indian market will be gobbled up, so why bother.

Not sure why they are taking 3+ years for what is essentially a stretch job. Hope they are going to restyle the exterior and interior into a mini RAV4 or Highlander instead of the bland Corolla Cross. Atleast the interior should be changed to a useful layout. More than the AWD option, I really hope they give it the rear independent suspension than the torsion beam rear option. But given that the independent rear suspension is only available with the AWD versions (both mechanical and e-axle), not sure if it will come to India.

It is indeed the longer Corolla Cross (Project 340D0 with an additional 150 mm in wheelbase.

On the styling front, not much is known, but Toyota could choose to differentiate it from the Corolla Cross with a new nose and new soft parts, including a plastic bumper, grille and headlights.
Quote:
expect this larger and heavier version to use the same set of engines as the Innova Hycross. That means it could be powered by the 173hp, 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine as well as the 2.0-litre strong-hybrid powertrain with 184hp and a healthy 206Nm of electric boost. The strong hybrid system, in fact, is what should give this SUV an efficiency advantage over its rivals, diesels included.
Maruti Version of the Grand Vitara in seven seat configuration will debut earlier and is not to be confused with the longer Corolla Cross.
It's also not known at this point if it will spawn a Maruti derivative as well.

Quote:
Do note that this will also be completely unrelated to the upcoming three-row Maruti Grand Vitara that will be based on a Maruti platform and will be produced at Maruti’s upcoming plant in Kharkhoda

The full digital cluster will definitely be the cheapest thing they can add, as compared to adding AWD, whether in hybrid or ICE form.

And sorry you are wrong. Toyota uses 2 electric motors on their 2 wheel drive hybrids, including the Hycross called MG1 and MG2. A large motor which can propel the car and takes care of regenerative braking, along with a smaller electric motor which starts the engine as well as acts as the generator to charge the hybrid battery or supply current directly to the bigger motor. The smaller motor is also what acts as the "transmission" part of the power-split device since it is what allows the the engine to run at different RPMs without affecting the speed of the vehicle.

For small AWD hybrids, they just add another electric motor to the rear axle which is independent of the 2 motors up front to provide some amount of power when needed. This is not to be confused with Toyota's recently launched i-Force Max hybrid system in the 2022 Tundra 4wd, which is truly for off-roading and heavy duty tasks. A similar powertrain is likely to make it's appearance in the next gen Fortuner as well.
