Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

It now appears, based on the report going round in the net, that the Bajaj ULCC will be a modified three wheeler with an additional wheel and not a full fledged car. And that this product would be a people carrier. Any how let us wait till the third of January 2012.

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

^^In other words, a quadracycle? Many years back BAL and TVS had plans to market such a vehicle, but the machinations of the car makers lobby put an end to it.

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

Come on! Do you really think so?

A 3 wheeler is designed with more emphasis on the load carrying ability, and least priority to safety, and with the assumption that it will never cross 40 kmph.

Can you develop a car based on such a platform, where the priorities are opposite? If so, may be they can sell it in India, but not elsewhere. It will not be a global car (unlike Nano).

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

It will be a four wheeler but not a car. Basically a four wheeled auto with a steering and better interiors. The move was defeated by the car makers on questions of safety and crash worthiness. I think this was around 2003 or so.

Naah.. I am not an insider. But what other news I have is

Edgar Heinrich - India | LinkedIn

The above is the person who is designing the upcoming 2 Wheelers and 4 wheelers and as per his Linkedin profile, he has been with BAL since 2009. Considering his prior credentials, we can expect something better than a 4 wheeled Bajaj RE

Actually I am friends with many Bajaj insiders (who claim they are not insiders). So, thats what the rumor mill has cooking. Bajaj as a company has moved ahead of the Chetak, Priya, Super days. Now its time to move on for the Bajaj RE.

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

Apologies for Bumping a old thread but looks like this car will remain a dream now . NISSAN has decided to pull out and Renault is already non committal.

Is this the End of this ambitious project for bajaj .

NEW DELHI: Japanese auto maker Nissan today said it has decided not to continue its partnership with Bajaj for sourcing of ultra-low cost car, ending months of uncertainty.

"We will not be continuing our relationship with Bajaj," a Nissan official said without disclosing reasons, when asked if the company has decided to end the proposed pact to source low cost cars from the Indian automobile firm.

When contacted, Bajaj AutoBSE 0.10 % Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj declined to comment on the issue stating he has not "heard from them".

As per an agreement reached between Renault-Nissan alliance and Bajaj Auto in 2009, the Indian automaker was supposed to design, develop and manufacture the product, which was intended as an ultra low cost car, while the alliance would sell it under their badging.

In 2010, Renault-Nissan announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Bajaj Auto to take forward their ULC car project.

Since then, Bajaj Auto had gone on to develop the RE60 but it remained uncertain if Renault-Nissan would source the product to sell in India and similar global markets and their partnership has not flourished.

Bajaj Auto had unveiled the RE60, a mini-four wheeler meant for urban transportation to replace three-wheelers at the Auto Expo in New Delhi in January this year.

At the time of unveiling the RE60, Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj had said it would be up to Renault-Nissan whether to source it or not after seeing the product.

Bajaj had, however, refused to call the RE60 that is a powered by a 200 cc rear mounted petrol engine with a top speed of 70 kmph, as a car saying it was a commercial vehicle meant for passenger transportation.

In January 2008, Bajaj Auto had unveiled its concept passenger car with an expected price of $3,000. It had partnered with Renault-Nissan for the ultra low cost (ULC) car project. The ULC was first scheduled to hit the roads in India in 2011, but was delayed due to differences between the partners on pricing and design.

While Renault-Nissan wanted to price the car at around $2,500, Bajaj insisted on lowering the overall cost of ownership.

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

RE60 in news again!

Bajaj Auto will launch its ultra-low-cost four wheeler or quadricycle RE 60 by April 2013 first in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh than in India, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of the company said.

Bajaj is waiting permission of the Indian government to sell the vehicle designed as a new category in the country. The quadricycle, showcased at the New Delhi Auto Expo in January, is expected to compete with Tata Motors Nano on price and create a new segment of vehicles.

French carmaker Renault, keen on a cheap car for emerging markets and supporting the RE 60 initiative, is yet to finalise its partnership in Bajaj.

M&M, Piaggio and Eicher are taking a closer look at making these vehicles either as people carriers or transportation vehicles, or both the venture.
We should be able to launch the product in four-five months.

We will start with a manufacturing capacity of 200 RE 60s per day, or 5,000 units a month.

Re: Pics: Bajaj's Small Car

Based on Rajiv Bajaj's interview in Business standard yesterday, there is definitely some love lost between Bajaj and Renualt/Nissan.

Its like we are not breaking the relation but we are not going to do anything further in this relationship.
