I feel suzuki on verge of confusion.

lots of questions suzuki hav to answer.
------------------------------------

what would be status of M800? will it be phased out ?
600cc car looks cool than alto, then what hapens to alto?
its tough to position this car in 1.5l bracket when alto and M800 are in market, even estilo is there. pricing and price reduction is tough task among these suzuki cars.

i think maruti wants to see what are the drawbacks in the nano after it is launched, and then give a 650 cc car at approximately the same price as nano with all the problems fixed.

It's all about survival of the fittest in each segment. Every consumer market is evolving. If you can't offer VFM, you're gone sooner or later. Maruti enjoyed the lowest priced car (base segment) for years as none wanted to produce & sell cheap cars & make little profit here (not wrt %age). TATA came out with a concept of a 1 lac car & created a new segment altogether. Now everyone wants to show presence in that yet to practically survive segment.

The TATA's & Suzuki's base for engine design & platform will be different. So can't expect much similarities.

The printed article mentions a few more things.

I found the 'decontentise' comment in the article very unusual. We all know modifying cars for 'Indian conditions' means stripping it considerably but no manufacturer has yet admitted it so openly.

In this case Maruti says they will remove airbags, abs and power steering... Also they are looking at cheaper materials for the body. Maruti does this with most of their models for India but when is the last time you heard them admitting it openly to the press. This smacks of spin rather than a sincere attempt to compete with the Nano.

Finally, A segment buyers will have choices. Even today, one with a budget of two lakhs, hardly has a choice. He has either the 800 or the Alto. Standard versions of both, do not have air conditioning.

4-5 years from now, he will have the nano, the bajaj car, the hyundai car and the maruti 'under A'. Which is a good thing. One should have choices, at any price point. When the C segment buyer can have 10 cars to choose from, why can't an A segment buyer have the same?

Just received an fax on the newsdesk of my paper from Maruti saying that it completely denies the existence of such a project and that it isn't working on a car cheaper than the Maruti 800.

Maybe the guys at TOI have jumped the gun.

Report in Rediff :

Maruti Suzuki has no plans to launch Rs 1.5-lakh car

Amid a race among auto makers to benchmark their smallest car against Tata's Rs 1-lakh (Rs 100,000) car, market leader Maruti on Tuesday said it has no plans to develop a vehicle with a 660cc engine, positioned below the Maruti 800 and priced at Rs 1.5 lakh (Rs 150,000).

Oh well Honda always said they had no plans to launch the city with ABS/Airbags if I am right.
And why would a publication like TOI including ET make headlines if this wasn't true?
Whatever it may be one thing is for sure that Maruti has already felt the heat, but cant do anything because of the earlier ridiculing.

What's this confusiion? Y'day in TOI it was a headlines that MUL will venture out a new car to compete with Nano. Today, I'am seeing they are not interested. The newspapers are creating some kind of confusion in the minds of people just to sell their papers.

maybe they donot want others to know that they are entering "under 800cc" segment.

they want to surprise customers by launching the car, without giving any details about it

Times of India is a tabloid and it prints all sorts of things. It then comes out with a disclaimer in page 26 or more. Usual media tactic. Guess who gains commercially.

maruti has no plans to counter the nano in any way with a new variant or model for the time being.nano production as it is is not in full swing for any one to worry about.it would take its own sweet time to be launched.
