As expected excellent pricing for Dzire from MSIL. VDI should be the chartbuster here!

Anyway ...

So, let's look at this. Swift (Hatch) Vs Dzire, Petrol version only

Model - Swift/Dxire - Difference
LXI - 3.99/4.49 - 50K
VXI - 4.34/4.97 - 63K (without ABS)
ZXI - 5.16/5.90 - 75K

There's a price difference of 75K at the high end, although it's only the boot getting added in comparison to the rest of the features. When everything else is the same, and there's no internal feature addition, why the drastic increase in price ? Just 'cos they think customers will pay ?

Understandably, the larger car (>4mts) excise duty kicks in, but does it add so much to the diff ?

FWIW, I was hoping ZXI to be around 6L OTR. Maybe my calculations were optimistically misplaced But this (75K, Zxi, ex-showroom) seems to be a huge diff.

And, whatz with the "introductory price" tag ? Does it mean it will increase/decrease ? If competition cuts hard, maybe maruti will drop prices ? Anyone wanting to speculate on this one ?

A little bit disappointed. Don't want to end up being a scape goat, but at the same time, don't want to spend too much time speculating and waiting for my next car :(
Valid points Sudhir, but the Indian mentality is to pay more for the boot. So why should maruti sell this for less. Moreover this will give Swift a level playing field.

Overall I fell this is excellent pricing from Maruti yet again. The VDi and ZXi are priced very well. Now Maruti can easily claim that they are the leaders of A3 segment in every sense.

Wow.

Now its really great move by maruti. Even after the so called "Intorductory" price scheme is over, the price increase wont be so much to affect a person who is going to buy a car in this segment.

The competetion that can be the most affected will be:
1) Renault Logan.
2) Indigo, till a new one comes out and tata will now race.
3)Ford Ikon ( even the diesel cant beat Dzire).
4) Accent, but eventually it was going to die.

Now I read in Yahoo India news that Renault is cutting its sales target in India. Couple that with this incredible peice that is definatley better looking than Logan, and Renault can come down to knees. Here is the link to that news article:
Renault cuts Indian sales target - Indian unit head - Yahoo! India News

Even the mighty Honda did in fornt of SX4.

So I think, Dzire will eat into Swift hatch, Getz, Ikon, upto some extent the Sx4 also.

OK, got it, thanks, hadn't seen that bit.

Actually, I guess they feel that the Dzire can kill everything in its path except its siblings

Not true for swift petrol and dzire petrol that you have mentioned. both have higher excise duty due to petrol engine cc limit. So the increase in difference of prices as one goes higher is totally what is called as "premium".

DZIRE on Rediff

Source: Rediff

It has a special place in our product strategy. Millions of Indians own compact cars. With growing incomes and better lifestyle, many of them want to upgrade to a sedan. But on Wednesday, they are not able to find an entry level sedan that offers style, features and performance. The DZire offers all this, and at an attractive price," Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director S Nakanishi said.

What's this thingy about Wednesday

:(
Even Swift should not enjoy excise duty benefit since it has a 1.3L engine

I remember that they (Logan) reduced the price upto 60K. So, is this for next innings of reduction?

I had been to Mandovi, Vijaynagar a couple of weeks ago and was told that the price difference for the Zxi would be close to 70K(compared to Swift Zxi). The reason quoted was that the body shell was imported or something of that sort. I'm sure this 'boot mentality' has something to do with the big difference.

About Dzire hurting sales of other cars from Maruti - I think they don't mind as long as the customers buy a Maruti. I'm sure the management would have comprehended these factors when they finalised the pricing.

I personally hate the long waiting periods - part of which is artifically created. I'm sure we'll see this happening with Dzire too. I was told the waiting period would be close to four months - this was even before the car was launched
