@cardeep, thanks for the update mate.

My confusion has been confused further.

I was already tossing between XYLO E8 ABS and Innova G1 (Since max budget was around 11 lac). but if Grande comes with better interiors and rear spring suspension then I'd have to find a 3 faced coin and then start tossing again.....

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

The rear door seems to top-open like a hatch now.

ABS and better multilink rear suspnesion are a must to have on Grande refresh.2.

One can see the interior still has that yucky glovebox with huge panel gap.

Good QC fit and finish, soft touch plastic, Reasonable cubby holes, good glove box, Underseat storage tray, Steering mount audio controls, good music system like the one on Manza/vista along with good dash board - few of the must on the Grande's interiors.

To make it sell in decent volumes More importantly aggressive pricing and 4 years standard unlimited mileage warranty

It was anyways a hatch even in the older Grande MARK II.

If it exists, tata should advertise it !
Grande Turbo is the economy version. It comes with the old 2.0 litre IDI engine which powered the Sumo Turbo, Sierra Turbo and did duty in the Safari. It is a BS3 engine.

The Grande is available in 3 varaiants - Ex, Lx, Cx, the Ex being the tope -end one.

The Price of Ex is about 40 K less than the LX model of the DICOR.

Personally, I feel the multilink suspension is very likely though I am not expecting of ABS. Panel gaps are something you must learn to live with, if you want to buy a TATA, even area has them. Better quality interiors, just as you have listed them, can be expected. The pricing would remain unchanged, so will be the warranty.

My intuition says it will be a improvement over MK II but still won't be a perfect product, like innova or scorpio.
The story of sumo grande to grande MK II will be repeated, even at the sales.

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

Seeing the history I can expect the changes in suspension and mechanicals but I doubt they will do anything for interior plastics fit and finish. That is least priority item in TML's laundry list.

They sold safari in various avtars and engines over the year bu tnever bothered about the plastics so there is not reason to be hopeful for Grande. Only in cases where vehicle is entierly new like Aria or Manza plastics were also new age.

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

The main problem with the GRANDE is the price. Its too costly, its more like a SAFARI wannabe than a SUMO replacement.

See one in black, the vehicle looks awesome. Other colours don't seem to do justice to it.

Another point is that it is targetting INNOVA customers and that's where it loses hands down. What Customers think is for a a few thousands more in EMI they can actually get an INNOVA

No surprises here. One look and you know why its a flop. Makes me cringe when I see one on the road. Plus the pricing. No point of an extensive thread for this IMO.

+1 to that. Hideous looks, same dated mechanicals, copious amounts of body roll and tacky plastics coupled with the complete destruction of the original Sumo character and toughness are reasons enough for the Grand failure of the Grande.
Doesn't really require a thread to analyse it.

Lovely machine, ashutoshb . In addition to the black colour, i think the wonderful alloys/tyres add to the character of your Grande.

I might have a different view on that

Re: Why was the Sumo Grande not a hit?

Ugly car. Terrible handling. No finesse. Mushy and Fuzzywuzzy gearbox. No 4WD. Antediluvian suspension and ergonomics. Perception of Tata's service as opposed to others.

End of the day, the Grande was always up against the Scorpio and the Scorpio just won hands down. Same comparo happened with the Safari and again the Scorpio just ticked more boxes for the majority of the buyers.
