Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010

Amongst the auto-industry heavyweights were a few smaller stalls displaying unique designs, models and project cars built entirely by college students.

Even though some of these stalls were tucked away in smaller halls, they did get their fair share of attention - including a quick visit by Ratan Tata!

This thread is a collection of a few of these stalls we came across on our speedy run-through of the expo. Please do add more info / pictures as needed.

M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering

Lets start off with this - The AM-01.

Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-01-img_2656.jpg

What is it ?
Its a formula racecar designed and built by students for the FSAE competition.

Whats special about it ?
Well for starters, TBHP moderator Ported_Head is part of the mainly 3-member team that designed and built this car from the ground up.
Along with having only 3 committed members in the team, finances were tight - and so a lot of the design was done to be as economical as possible. For eg. they bought a scrapped engine block, melted it down and then sand-cast it to form the housing for their torsen limited slip differential!

Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-01-img_2657.jpg

Details?
It uses a 600cc bike engine and gearbox from the CBR600RR - though due to the regulations of the competition there is a 20mm restrictor on the air intake, limiting power - but they haven't got the space to exercise that engine to near its full potential anyway.
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-01-img_2756.jpg

Video ?
Heres one from the early stages of testing (within the college courtyard!).
Also the need for Helmet + other safety gear was noted soon after this drive
Turn your sound up!

More questions?
Ask away, and hopefully Ported_head will get to them soon.

Delhi Technological University

Delhi Technological University, formerly Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) has a couple of FSAE cars under their belt - as well as success in the past in terms of actually participating in the competition abroad. (A lot of teams don't quite make it to that stage due to time deadlines and the high costs associated with taking a team + car overseas).

Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-02-img_2639.jpg

Whats special about it ?
The unique thing about this car is that its running a single cylinder 450cc Yamaha engine. With the max CC allowed by the rules being 600, the majority of teams try to maximize the displacement and therefore power. However, a few teams opt in for smaller engines, compromising a little on outright power, but saving a lot of weight. Striking the right compromise is the tricky part.

Entirely carbon fiber bodywork - done in-house.
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-02-img_2642.jpg

The gearshift along with the hand-operated clutch.
(Being a bike gearbox, the clutch isn't really essential one you've begun to move and a lot of times upshifts are done clutchless)

Team Orion racing had a recent FSAE car on display too. The Stallion.

This is a team with some experience under their belt, and it shows - with this car being a very well finished job.
(Love those shiny A-arms too)
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-autoexpo2010-2.jpg

Whats special ?
One of the first things that caught my eye on the car was a wheel-speed sensor on their front left wheel, and it turns out that they have a completely home-grown electronics system on the car which takes the speed input, as well as accelerometer, gear position and other sensors and displays some of it on the steering-mounted LCD, as well as storing the data on a USB key for analysis later.
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-lcd-module.jpg

Another unique thing is their impact attenuator
(Rules require it to help reduce sudden deceleration during frontal impact - basically a crumple zone).
Usually teams use aluminum honeycomb, since its cheap, easy and light - however Team Orion is in the process of patenting this polypropylene impact attenuator they have developed - and even tested at ARAI!
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-impact-attenuator.jpg

Here you can see the red impact attenuator mounted at the front of their car.

At one end of IIT Delhi's stall, team axlr8r had put their 2008 car on display.

A few small models of vehicles designed by students were also on display

M. H. Saboo Siddik College of Engineering

Another car from Saboo Siddik College once again, however, this car is the successor to the AM-01 featured earlier.

Called the Karma - this FSAE car was designed and built by an entirely new batch of students and runs a 250cc Yamaha Fazer engine.

Some nice looking Yokohoma's were procured at a special price after they visited Japan (sans car) for an event.
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-img_2655.jpg

Whats special ?
The interesting thing about this car is that it does not feature a differential at all! Both the rear wheels rotate at exactly the same speed.
This can be seen as a saving of weight (no differential and only 1 in-board disc) as well as reduced complexity and cost of the drivetrain. However, i'd be interested to see how well it works in reality.

(pic taken from the thread linked below)

^^ In addition to the "spool-drive" at the rear, the car also features an electronic gearshift which unfortunately had been removed from the car being displayed.

Chitkara University

Now, for a change of pace - here is a car from Chitkara university that is designed purely for economy. The casual "average kitna milta hain?" asking viewers must have been shocked out of their minds when they heard the answer to that one!

Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-img_2647.jpg

Designed to participate in the Shell Eco Marathon held in Fontata, California, this vehicle is a 3-wheeler and runs a 125cc motor.
Areodynamics and weight play a huge role when it comes to squeezing the most out of the gallon, and so it rides less than 2" off the ground, and has a completely flat underbody as well.
Young Talent at the Auto Expo 2010-img_2646.jpg

A FRP shell, anti-luxurious cabin, skinny tyres and a different compound tyre used for the 3rd (driven) wheel to reduce slippage are the key features here.

Team STEALTH bagged 1st place for the Perseverance award as well as 5th place for design out of 32 participants in the 2009 competition.

A wild looking vehicle from the students at Northern India Engineering College. It sure had some nice character!
Unlike most of the other vehicles which were designed with specific competitions in mind, this was done purely as a fun project.

Not shown in these pictures - but they had linked up the oil between all 4 shocks via the chassis tubing itself!

Wow!

Information about world's Mercedes' and Audies and BMWs and Hondas will be available everywhere, but one won't get such really interesting information about efforts from amateurs and enthusiasts.

Great eye and great thread, Rehaan! Rated 5 star.

Looking at what these students have done, this is working as a catalyst to my ever growing curiosity of what great things future holds for us in automotive technology and design.

Specially MSSS college is a little close to me since 2 of my brothers have passed out from it.

Same feelings here brother. Just so nice to see such things happening. These things go a lot towards creating a complete eco-system of everything auto.
