Just returned from the drag stip, no nothing perverted there, as I am referring to the strip of tarmac on which the 2nd Deccan Quartermile drag races were held.
APMSC is doing its bit to revive interest in Motor Sports in Hyderabad and the Quarter mile drag events are a part of that effort. It is going to be a long and arduous journey before Hyderabad can hope to be a premier destination for motor sports but, at least a beggining is made. There were several shortcomings in the arrangements and conduct of the event. A major irritant being the public trooping into Pit/Paddock area as well as onto the track towards the end of the day. The stewards and scrutineers too need to fine tune their act. The only way this will happen is through more exposure.
Arrangements for spectators were half-way decent and the seating area had a clear view of the strip. However the spectators had to walk past the scrutiny area and the path that competitors take to go to the strip. A better designed lay out for the competitors area or corral with direct access to the track without passing the spectators footpath is possible considering the vast area available and I hope that it will become a reality in September. The loud jarring noise that passed for music was a major irritant and meant that most people blanked out the PA system and thereby missed most of the announcements too. IMHO it is a race day, could we please stick to vehicles, their sounds and some intelligent commentry on the competitors and their vehicles and leave the dance music for later in the evening.
There were a fair number of competitors spread across all varieties of vehicles. A few friends from Bangalore, Pune etc. too were there. The Bangaloreans did quite well and carried away quite a few prizes at the end of the day.
I must say that it was a brilliant day for the Hyd-TBHPians. A few of us were rooting for 'Team Mars' of 'New mars' which belongs to Prabhu (regular at Hyd- TBHP drives and meets). Team Mars put in a sterling performance. Both cars prepared by Team Mars won their classes and one car to whom Team Mars extended local support won its class and came in second in the Indian Open!
Most of the TBHP gang headed straight for the pit/paddock of Team Mars and stayed put there for the day donning the 'Team Mars' t-shirts in support of the cars from the stable.
The morning session was when Prabhu put in an excellent run in the stock Zen (Indian Cars upto 1100 CC) and pulled ahead at the launch and stayed there till the finish line. We also prepared the Octy of Rajesh and helped Akshay Joshi (also a TBHPian) in getting his RS ready in conformity with the demands of the scrutineers (which included removing the doors from another Octy and fitting them onto his RS). LOL now I know why a lot of competition vehicles run with body parts in mismatched colours!
Rajesh was a bit anxious so we went to work on him in true TBHP style. It was finally time for his run in the Indian Diesel cars upto 2000 CC and we watched with bated breath as he recovered from a relatively poor launch to zip through his gears (and heeded our advice to not stay in 3rd for too long) and come in ahead of his competition. Rajesh's run meant that the cars entered by Team Mars had both come in first!
We now watched to see what would happen to Akshay and his RS. Akshay ran in two categories i.e. Indian cars upto 2000 CC and the Indian Open. His first run was good enough to get him the first though his car was not performing at the expected levels. In his second run, Akshay's reaction time was too long which meant that his excellent launch and fantastic performance by his car (presumably since it was now warmed up) was good only to bring him in second. No matter dude, the car is new and you say you are a little rusty from lack of practice so I am sure that you will get that coveted top spot soon enough. Team Mars and Hyd TBHP shall always support you.
I now wonder how many more Team-BHPians will take part in the next Deccan quartermile drag race scheduled for September 18 & 19, 2009. I see promise of a Getz CRDI, a Zen 1.3 Rocket, a couple of Palio 1.6s.
Sorry mates, I know there were a lot of exotics around and I did watch the runs of the Supra and GTR and took a stroll to eyeball the wonderful Augusta MV but today I was fully occupied by the cars being looked after by Team Mars and the kids. Incidentally IMHO neither the Supra nor the GTR were performing anywhere near their peak today.
Two amazing cars from Bangalore were a SX4 and an Esteem. I would have loved to look at their innards to see what they were running for they were nowhere near stock cars.

According to my sources, it was not
his Ritz and the owner came and tried to make a donut of
his face.
I cannot comprehend how anyone can even contemplate trashing someone elses vehicle. Taking it for a spin or TD is one thing but, doing donuts, slides etc. or ripping it is definitely not done. It is best if all of us desist from trashing other peoples cars and bikes.

Guys, if your partying at the Boat's club is over, please post pictures ASAP
Nazim, do the honours soon. |
Rajesh is Prabhu's brother in law (if I am not mistaken) and a delightful chap.
In addition to Prabhu's two in a row, Team Mars made a clean sweep today with all cars prepared or supported by it - winning.
Another feather in the cap for TBHP-Hyd, our own Pulsar56 was designated the official photographer by APMSC for the award ceremony and he was using today the camera of yet another TBHPian - Absynthguzzler! LOL a clean sweep by TBHP on that front too.
Cheers,
