| ID:783; 1962 Wartburg 1000 pickup(internal code 311) ID:783 is a 1962 Wartburg 1000 pickup(internal code 311)   As the "grey" minimalist housing tenements in the background attest, this pickup hails from the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (erstwhile communist East Germany). Wartbug cars, being marginally more upmarket than the Trabant, tended to be owned only by Communist Party officials and other people with "connections." These cars were built in Eisenach, a city overlooked by the Wartburg castle, which lent its name to the Wartburg brand. Schloss Wartburg is steeped in History. It was a 11th century Thuringian castle, where Martin Luther hid escaping arrest in 1521 and translated the Bible to German. Even Adolf Hitler had thrust upon the local authorities to take down Schloss Wartburg's cross and replace it with the Swastika of the Third Reich. The 1956-65 Wartburg 1000 limousine[*] (internal code 311) was also factory-built as a four-door Kombi called the Wartburg 1000 Camping, two-door Kombi, a pickup truck, a 2+2-seat coupé and 2-seat cabriolet(internal code 313). Imagine that, even though all they had was just one DKW-derived three-cylinder two-stroke engine driving a 2-speed transaxle. Yes it ran on a mixture of 1 part of 2T oil to 50 parts of petrol. If the car was running downhill, the sumpless engine could starve of lubrication and seize, so the one-way clutch was designed to freewheel and disconnect the transaxle from the engine. That way you would freewheel downhill, checking your progress with the brakes alone!! translation from Czech: Zatím bez benzinu ? Still without petrol? a s benzinem ! And with petrol ! The 2-stroke 3-cylinder had a rear-facing radiator. Each of the three spark plugs had its own independent set of breaker-points and independent ignition coil, one for each cylinder. The breaker points were mounted in a cluster around a single lobed cam at the front end of the crank shaft -- i.e. facing the rear because of the unusual mounting. Also at the front end of the crank shaft was a belt driven fan. This engine had three power strokes per crankshaft revolution, like a six-cylinder four-stroke engine. DKW (the original designer's) advertising said, "drei Kraftimpulse pro Kurbelwellen-Umdrehung, genau wie beim Sechszylinder-Viertakter." I translate: three Powerimpulses per crankshaft-rotation, exactly like a Sixcylinder-Fourstroker The Limousine und the Camping Kombi were powered by a 900 cc 37 bhp motor, while the other bodystyles got a slightly more powerful 990 cc 50 bhp engine.
