i would like to report a few issues i faced with the car since i bought it and their fixes as well.
-the horn was not functioning correctly and some times only one would blow,
with my inexperience with the VW cars(since i have never owned one before) i while cruising near HBR layout stopped at a small Auto Accessories shop and asked for Skoda horn( that's what they are called popularly), the shopkeeper offered me wind stones for 700 and 100 for install, i was not really sure if he could do the install in this highly complicated car but i agreed reluctantly.
he guy took off the headlight and removed the oe horns from underneath the left side HL and i knew the wind stones were not plug and play as the sockets were different. the guy cut open the wires for the socket and gave an alternate connections to horns and the horns started working and i paid him and drove away.
soon i realized the mistake i made.
a few days later early in the morning i had stopped at a tea shop and when i turned the lights on "Nothing" pressed the horn button "nothing again", wiper same thing.
i went in to panic mode, tried to contact Ajmat, well couldn't reach him and used the car with out lights horn and wipers for a day or two(rest everything else worked fine).next day spoke to my brother and explained the issue i was facing, he did a little research and said that it was the relay sitting below the steering wheel which has gone bad and needs a replacement and to prove his theory right! he presented a few threads on BriSkoda.I said fine lets buy the relay and replace it. we early in the morning parked the car at his place(BTM) and removed the relay, unfortunately there was no way for us to check the relay so we landed at 9 in the morning at the JC Road. got the relay also the fuse box sitting on the battery as i saw a burnt mark on one of the slots where the cables sits in. Got them back and installed both, Switched on the car and boom. Nothing!
Exhausted and disheartened( i do night shifts at work) i decided to visit Tafe in hosur road and called to book and appointment , the lady from Tafe said she will get a mech to look at the car for me as soon as i get there but while driving near Forum Mall i called a friend who is a car dealer to see if he has ever heard of something like this in a Skoda Octavia and to my surprise he said yes and directed me to a local electrician in Adgudi.
the Electrician looked at the car checked all the fuses( which i had already done and confirmed that all were good) and then then opened the complete ignition panel and other bits on the dash board and after 2 hours and 1k later the issue was fixed, he even taped the horn wire properly because of which the issue actually started( the wires were not tapped correctly and got soaked when the water from the car wash leaked in there).
and that's when i decided not to let any tom ,dick and harry touch my car from here onward.
-Brake light switch, now after my first episode i have understood a few things.
1- this car is not lilke your usual car( i am comparing it my I-Vtec ) its very temperamental and unlike other normal car where your the owner and they live to serve you, i need to adjust to its temperament.
And like any project or what ever you call it, this needs a lots and lots research on the web to maintain it.
so one fine day came back from work park the car and after locking it as usual i took a stroll around it to inspect it, i saw the brake lights( the regular and the high mounted light) ON!
Now i knew if i left it like this it will be very difficult to start it(battery will be drained) and lack of jump cables will be a hassle.
so i quickly looked up the internet to see what the issue could be.
found that this is a know issue with the brake light switch on this model of VW cars and needs a replacement.
i was tired after my shift and didn't wanted to do any thing then so looked for the fuse for the BL and removed it, lights go off!
Next night at office i researched a bit more during my free time on this issue and found that there is a way of fixing it rather than replacing it.
so i (i had packed all the tools and tool kits i had that day before leaving for work) used the tools and removed the switch and opened it and cleaned it with WD 40, it took me a long time to install it correctly and this time it actually worked.i was relived and hoped that it would be the last of the tantrums of the mighty VRS but my hope faded away in to thin air very soon.
After a couple of days on taking care of the mighty VRS with utmost care ( seriously my daughter now feels jealous of it). it threw another tantrum when i started the car one fine day, it started sounding as if it had a Jet engine underneath the bonnet. My heart started beating fast and i for a few minutes just stopped breathing however after a minute or two it stopped and the car started behaving normally.
i with utmost care drove it to office and started researching on google, Briskode ,you tube and what not and soon got an answer.
This is again a known issue with the Air pump and a poorly designed part.
the rivets have loosened out and needs to be replaced with bolts however accessing this part needs removing the under body cover and requires some time. So i have postponed it for later time as i intend to replace the Brake pads, the suspension Bushes very soon.
will post more of my adventures with the mighty VRS as and when i dragged in to them.
i did thought about selling it off but after a drive the mind changes automatically so not sure what i will do.
PS: i thank Ajmat to take out time to respond to my stupid queries, really appreciate it
