Tata Nano and life beyond. Update: 60k km and 12 years!

She was always cute
She was always pretty
She was a head turner and gathered lot of attention

But the head above my heart never thought she would be pratical.......

Untill it happened one fine day...........
We visited Concorde to have a look at TATA VENTURE ( not that i was going to buy it ) and saw a Bright chirpy Nano on display.

We were amazed at the amount of space it had at front and rear!!
The sales person offered a TD, i was up and ready for it

It felt like a normal car and AC was damn good, the TD vehicle has 5000K under its belt and rode well for such a small car!

Impressed we ( My self and wife ) were ........ and we started dreaming!
Just had 3 days to think since the scheme would end by then.

No more thinking, No more dreaming......we booked it the day after!!
It had not yet sinked that we had in fact booked a TATA NANO!!

Colour choice was unanimous - Champenge Gold.
We would get the car in 15 days as per sales rep

But that was not to be, we did Pdi after 17th day and finally got the car after almost 1 month

48 Kms on ODO, fitted with sun films, neck rests and security system there she was ready to be driven away.............

Finally at 12.30pm on 21st March 2011, she was our's.....
Wife Cranked the engine for the first time and it was sweet..........

There was still disbelief that we were actually going to own a NANO!!!
And she was out of the showroom like a princess, and started her journey in the big bad world.

So below is my Initial review of the world's cheapest car in terms of price and not substance............

I will rate the car on scale of 1 to 10.

( Note : Have been driving Padmini for last 5 years
Have driven Esteem , Santro , Omni , M800 for good amount of time )

Ride - 6 ( Slightly better than OMNI )
Handling - 6.5 ( Slightly better than OMNI )

Interior space - 9 ( Superb leg room and headroom @ front and rear, can sit 5 )

Ingress \Egress – 10 ( This car is the best in this with doors that open @ 90 deg!!! And tall boy design )

AC - 9 ( cools u even during afternoon when sun in beating down at setting 1! )

Electricals - 8 ( Horn is not that loud, rest excellent, even has a rear fog lamp along with the 2 front fog lamps )

Fit and finish ( exterior ) - 8, Good paint quality and neat panel gaps.

Storage / Boot space - 3 ( door pockets on all 4 doors, but they can only store a magazine ), boot access is very poor, u need to flip the rear seat , pull a lever.

Gearshift quality - 9 ( superb , slots correctly and nice feel )

Power delivery 1 & 2nd gears - 7 ( Does not feel underpowered at all )
3 & 4 th gear - 6 ( Its here that she will run out of breath after u slot in 4th in case u do not have much momentum )

Effect of AC on engine power – 7 ( U will feel that only when climbing inclines when loaded with 4 people , else its low )

Noise vibration and harshness - 7 ( noise is present but its not disturbing , vibrations are absent and engine does not feel harsh like a new indica xeta petrol )

Ergonomics – 7 ( Power window buttons are difficult to reach )
Visibility of road – 7 , ( Good at front since u sit higher than most cars , front A pillar blocks the view while taking right turns)

Rear visibility while reversing – 4 ( Blind spot - cant see the Kerb easily since the rear end is high )

Fuel efficiency – No idea yet.

Happiness factor - 9 ( small children will call out Nano! Nano! and admire the car a lot , surely a head turner everywhere , admiration guaranteed )

Have completed only 125 kms yet..................
Hoping to add more as time permits and will surely add more pics as well.
Happy motoring

Nano indeed is a very practical city car. Great choice indeed. Do keep updating the thread especially for fuel efficiency.

Congrats on owning a great little car which lots of folks are still not aware of and a lot of myths are floating around. We have a cx model for the last 5 months.Absolutely no issues except that the service centre could be better. They are trying though! The horn also is loud enough to warn others to make way!Am getting a fuel efficiency of 17.5 in heavy traffic presently (driven around 1300 kms).

Cheers!

re: Tata Nano and life beyond. Update: 60k km and 12 years!

Congrats on the Nano silverado! I'm sure it will keep surprising you as it did for me during the first TD.

We are also getting a Nano very soon. And a sunshine yellow at that. BTW could you elaborate a bit more on the 5% interest thingy. Is it from Tata Finance or someone else?

We have managed the following discounts:
  1. Insurance worth 57XX free
  2. Accessories worth Rs.7,000/-

Do you think there is a scope of improvement here

BTW do you have any idea how much the black leather/pseudo rexine seat covers are costing in Mumbai. Also I have received a blank from the local dealership about left ORVM. Any leads from your end?

Drive safe!

Cheers

re: Tata Nano and life beyond. Update: 60k km and 12 years!

@MileCruncher; It was a limited time offer from TATA Finance in Mumbai which has already ended. Since you are planning to buy one, enquire your local dealer. Sincce they want to push the Nano sales figure, they might consider it though the offer has ended.

Mile cruncher - 5% Roi was valid till End of Feb 2011.
You have managed excellent discounts from the dealer.
And how much time will it take for you to take the delivery?

I was getting more discounts from Wasan motors, but i decided to buy it from Concorde since its a 100% subsidiary of TATA MOTORS.

I would recommend you to get seat covers customised since you will have freedom to design the look and feel of the same, also can customise storage options in the seat cover.

I am not sure but the ready made seat covers should cost in the range of 2k- 3K.

Nothing as far as left side RVM is concerned, that surely is a blind spot for most people, being used to no left side RVM in my padmini i am just fine with it , but my wife will surely need one as and when she starts driving on road.

Also we should think about storage options in Nano, i will post a pic of a rectangular bag which i have managed to losely keep ahead of the gear lever as a TEMP storage option.

I am thinking of getting a dash bin fabricated , i can surely get it done in wood, but it will not gell well with the interiors.

I will check at Sion koliwada for accesories available for Nano, next week.

Sure we are!!
Btw, I have a few doubts regarding the security system. When I inquired about it at the dealership, they said that its siren is attached to the horn of the car and like other systems, it does not have a separate alarm! Is that true? And the lady also mentioned that it does not give the alarm when you lock and unlock. Please clarify.

Regarding seat covers, I think TATA has only fabric seat covers, but I felt those to be good and pretty cheap too.
I'm sure you( I mean the car! lol) must be encountering many heads while on the road!!

Drive safe!

Cheers!

Congratulations Silverado. Wishing you a long and happy ownership.

I was used to seeing only the Yello Nano so far. Champagne gold looks awesome as well.

Excellent city car. Its simple & that is its strength. Esp in city like Bangalore, in the maddening traffic it can zip around as easily as a 2 wheeler.
Love the cute small spoiler sticking out on the back.
Congratulations on the buy & hope you have a great time with her. Hope you will be back with a "Long term ownership thread" on the little princess.Happy motoring
