re: To-be-avoided Car Accessories

Nice topic Mr.Boss!

Here's my list of stupid accessories:

•L-O-N-G antennas.
•Fake air vents/hood/roof scoops.
•Fake Stickered Moonroofs.
•XXL sized cloth hanger spoilers.
•Overdose of Chrome.
Chrome around tailights,headlights,grille,bumper corner protectors,side protectors,window beading,door handles etc.
•White coloured side indicator bulbs.
•Dancing tail lights.
I don't know what exactly they are called.
•Tinted headlamp/tail lights.
There are a variety of tints available in the market blue, red, green, yellow, chameleon etc.
•Colour changing numberplate bulbs.
•Small stoplights mounted under the rear bumper.
•Reverse horns
The ones which play out music while reversing
•E-X-T-R-A loud horns.

Nice thread.
I would like to classify "to be avoided accessories" under two categories:
1) Harmless ones: these are the ones which are based on a individual's taste. These include chrome garnishings, stickerings of fake air vents, air hood etc. Let's not judge others likes and dislikes as long as it doesn't affect us in a direct way.
2) Harmful ones either for the driver, occupants, and other road users. These include distracting or hindering accessories such as IRVM mounted monitors, soft toys on parcel tray, loud horns etc.
The only accessories that I have are T-BHP stickers (genuine) and a dashcam.
Thanks,
Rajiv

Why is "Exposed Towhooks" on this list?

The Towhook or Pintle Hook by its very nature is an external fitment and fits perfectly on Jeeps and 4WD vehicles. Not just for show. But for functionality.

Indeed, I ve had them on one of my Previous Gypsys, my Bolero and my Scorpio and in the case of the Gypsy and the Bolero they came in very handy indeed to pull people out of the guff they got themselves into! (Once on the beach in Madras where a Tata Sierra got stuck, in 2005 when I pulled out a Nissan X Trail from a pretty deep ditch near Sarjapur road and another time in 2005 during the floods in Bangalore when I pulled out several cars from deep ruts, manholes and what not...)

Meant the ones being installed as a needless accessory on city cars along with non working ham antennas

I absolutely hate these! The sellers should probably be prosecuted for selling such devices!

1. Monitors in place of rear-view mirrors

re: To-be-avoided Car Accessories

Good thread!

Apart from the items listed, I hate those rear windscreens that have children's names on it. This seems more prevalent in AP and Telangana though. Some cars even have the surname that is probably meant to indicate the caste of the owner!

Hahaha, epic. Fake Team BHP stickers!

Also, one thing which annoys me the most is loud exhausts and L-O-U-D music systems. Both are an absolute menace to society. Loud exhausts especially when they don't even sound good. Now, can a 1st-gen City or Zen ever sound like a Lambo? Very idiotic way of seeking attention.

The third and fourth pictures are not seatbelt override devices - these are seatbelt extenders, for gentlemen who carry additional spare tyres made of flesh-and-blood in their cars.

Steering wheel spinner knob AKA Suicide knob.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brodie_knob

Quote:
The "Steering Wheel Spinner Knob" was invented by Joel R. Thorp of Wisconsin in 1936. The Brodie name is a reference to Steve Brodie and was meant to describe all manner of reckless stunts.[3] The device is often called a "suicide knob" because of being notoriously useless for controlling the wheel during an emergency.[4] Brodie knobs are also known as necker knobs", because they allow steering with one hand while necking with the passenger. It is also called a "knuckle buster" because of the disadvantage posed by the knob when letting go of the steering wheel after going around a corner, the wheel spins rapidly and the knob can hit the user's knuckle, forearm, or elbow. If the driver is wearing a long sleeve shirt, the protruding accessory on the rim of the steering wheel can also become caught in the sleeve's open cut by the button. Other names include "granny knob" and "wheel spinner."

Had the misfortune of driving around in a cousin's Swift with one of these contraptions fitted. Absolute nightmare!

This reminded me of a picture which was doing rounds over whatsapp couple of years ago.

Some oversmart person had tried to scan and make copies of popular TBHP stickers.

LED bulbs in a conventional head lamp reflector housing. Gets me swearing their entire family-tree.
