What difference will it make to the performance of the zen (completely stock) if i replace the stock filter with a kn stock replacement filter without remapping the ecu. |
none.
K&N stock or conical filter will have no effect w.r.t performance.

IMO the best street build can be the 1.3 MPFi setup in a Zen with a short ratio gear box, and some N/A mods, just kills anything upto 100 Kmph.
Race builds have hit it's saturation with Zens clocking 12.6 secs or something close, so that stuff is not street-able at ALL. I have had a fair share of driving some Honda engine zens, and it's not pretty. |
+1 to that. Anything beyond 1.3 in a zen is not for daily use.
found this pic in my comp. taken in some drag meet.
But i am not looking for a drag vehicle, i am looking for one which can achieve high speeds rather than low quater mile times.
Any one know what these Zens at the Chennai track are running?
1) Engine.
2) Suspension.
3) Wheels and tyres.
They seem to have a nice wide stance and maybe they handle quite well. Anyone here who has driven one of these?

so what do you think can work in order to give the car a fair amount of acceleration over a stock car without eating away too much on the milage.
I guess currently my car produces 60 bhp.

headers(low/mid) + complete FFE will have some noticeable improvement in performance.

I'd say Not even the 1.3..
If the person is more like a novice and wants a DAILY USE ZEN, he/she'd better stick to a MPFi zen + synthetic oil + a good filter + FFE + good footwear.
Period.
It is more than enough for comfortable city drives as well as going around max 130 kmph range on the expressways. The zen is simply not built for anything higher than that.
All those engine swaps, e zens, b zens, h zens are just not worth the hassle of doing and then maintaining. You (and your car) will end up spending more time with the mechanic than what you'd have hoped for.
Peace of mind is what the zen was built for and it should stay like that.
If you want more power, get a higher spec'd and a bigger car (baleno, ikon 1.6, gtx) etc.
Like Spiderman once said, Power is useless without handling (responsibility). please:

I beg to differ only in the case of a zen with a 1.3Ltr esteem/swift engine. It is a direct bolt on fit and works as equal to a stock factory fit. No hassles whatsoever. Pick up a mpfi esteem engine, couple it with a FFE, CAI and all the basic mods, and that is well off.

True the 1.3 is a direct bolt on but, the suspension has to be beefed up before the FFE, CAI etc. go in. The Zen with a 1.3 in it (even in stock form) is a rocket and the suspension and tyres are just not up to the task of handling the additional power and speed.
Cheers,

Oops, I completely forgot about the suspension part :p Just couple it with diesel zen shocks or stiffen the springs. and yes, pop in the esteem brakes and now you are all set to stop :p
Why do so much to a poor car ?
You'd be almost spending almost the cost of a used zen on all the above mods (engine swap, modified suspension, new brake setup and the rest).
Are the chasis dynamics and the 'weight' / safety features of the car good enough for all that ? No
Is it legal ? No
Will your insurance be valid ? Most likely Not
Will it be as reliable as a stock zen ? Supposedly Not
Again - If you dont want a track/race car but a daily use car. And If you want more power, get a higher spec'd and a bigger car (baleno, ikon 1.6, gtx) etc. and get peace of mind.

Nopes the Diesel's suspension does not work too well as it is a bit too stiff. I guess it will be a mixture of hi-performance struts and springs with altered springing rates. This coupled with some adding/reducing of height on the rear/front as well as judicious use of spacers should do the job.
Cheers,

I am not sure if the diesel zen has different dampers - at least on the esteem, difference between the esteem diesel and petrol is the springs .
Well i believe getting a higher spec car is better than going in for upgrades like engine swap. A person with hands on experience is required to maintain these kind of cars. Plus as mentioned the problems with RTO insurance company etc doesn`t seem to end. But on the other side if you are well acquainted with the car mechanics then these kind of upgrades add aunique touch of exclusivity. In the end its all about enjoying your car.:)
