Truly amazing work Amey. I have a question for you thou. If your planning to turbocharge the motor does it matter that much whether its a dohc or sohc regarding the engine breathing part as long as you have 16 valves, or is it that you need some flexibility in the cam timings. Sorry if the question has been asked before. |
You can Turbocharge a SOHC motor, its not like you cant but a DOHC head will definitely help thanks to its much better flow characteristics.
SOHC - DOHC swap was not part of the original plan, its a last minute addition :D

Wow the visuals are amazing !! It looks like a new engine - great patience & great work..so when does it hit the road ??

4-5 days maybe ? Clutch installed today, tomorrow gearbox will be installed and then the entire thing goes in.Then comes the reconnection part for sensors, installing manifolds, injectors, coil packs, leads and so on.

Drool pics man, very nice built. So, time for a turbo ? what boost you plan to run this thing on.
Forged internals can take 14 PSI and above. I mean I was surprised to read RPWs details of 4G94, where it said that the stock internals can also take up to 14 PSI of boost, ofcourse depending upon intercooler and tuning and an upgraded gasket.
|
Turbo was always the original plan, DOHC popped in between lol. The bottom end is strong enough for 18-20 psi boost or maybe even more.
I plan to use around 5-8 psi boost daily (Even thats gonna be a handful) but since I woul dbe having electronic boost control inbuilt in my ECU, i can crank it up whenever I want :)
Looks good Amey :)
Like the colorful parts, they came like that or you got the cover etc painted?
All the best with the Finish & looking forward to your drive experiences :)
Any idea on what the compression ratio will be like ? Its needs to be low for the turbo right ?
The engine pics look fantastic. Waiting for the engine bay pics of the complete engine goes in.

The DOHC head isnt brand new. Therefore it was obviously looking old and used.Even though the head was completely worked on internally, the Rocker cover looked very dirty and old and thats why we go it painted.Since we built the engine completely with new internals, why keep the most visible part in unattended state and let it become an eyesore ?
As for the Cam pulleys, they arrived after the rocker cover was painted and Even though I had told Luis to send me black or blue ones, he deliberately sent purple ones.Thank god he didnt send pink ones as per his original plan.Would have killed him if he did that. lol:

To be honest, We havent really checked as such. The stock engine had a CR of 9.5:1 and the 4G93 DOHC had a CR of 12:1 but then we are using deep dish forged pistons similar to the stock ones but with a slightly deeper dish and in addition to that we are using 1.8mm OE MLS gasket from the 4G93 DOHC Turbo.
Although we havent measure the CR, I am sure it is within safe limits.
I had no doubt on the output quality of this build considering that Amey had done his research to the "T". He would always recite part numbers, model numbers and specifications at the tip of his tongue and is very well prepared to have a modded car. Well deserved mate, can't wait for the car to be back on the roads.
All the best.
Maybe this is the most appropriate thread for my queries.
Where can I find spares for Cedia in Pune or Mumbai?
I am looking for a gear knob and maybe a few more parts subsequently.
Thank you for the rich experience sharing.

If you are looking for OE parts then I think J.Williams & Co. is your best bet. If you are looking for aftermarket stuff then depends on what all you need. There are a couple of places like Poona Motors where you can pick up these accessories.
Looking awesome! Can't wait to see everything in place. Will you be chroming anything? Would go well with the painted rocker cover etc.
Would love to see the car in person sometime. Will give you a call when I make it to Pune.

No, I hate chrome!
You are most welcome to drop in anytime mate. Will definitely let you know whenever I plan to come to Mumbai with the car.
After rebuilding the engine, and changing the head, we had never tried whether the custom made turbo manifold and the turbo fit well with the new head because the manifold was made after taking measurements with turbo installed with the old SOHC head.
So we thought, why not try out before the engine goes inside tomorrow.
It was such a relief to know that everything fit just fine. :D
The dump pipe is readymade but the manifold is made locally. A few modifications would be done to this manifold to make a port for installing the external wastegate.
Will up date this thread as and when I have updates.
With the seperate runners, you know you need 2 wastegates. Your plans of merging the 2 set of runners to a single wastegate is going to cause boost-creep. Where the path to the wastegate provides resistance and cannot bleed all the extra air. Hope you have planned for that.

I know that buddy and still in a dilemma what to do about it.:Frustrati
@pranav @amey
