Folks, very basic question. I have a H7 55W halogen setup in my Honda City VX (5th gen). Can I just replace the halogen bulb with a LED bulb of the same wattage and specifications, without changing anything else else? I’m looking to get the light to be white in colour, hence the need to change. Please advice.

Halogen is white , close to sunlight as it can be. Anyhow , LED chip's shape is not going to help get a good beam pattern out of a reflector made for halogen. You are going to spend money and end up with headlights that aren't as good as it was earlier.

I think I’m not describing correctly because of my limited knowledge in the space. The current setup is a projector setup for low beam, which has a halogen bulb inside. Even in this case, you’re saying that the LED’s chip shape will be a problem?

Yes, the projector has a reflector inside which is then going through a glass lens. In this case upgrade the halogen bulb to higher wattage like 80W. You can add a headlamp relay kit for upgraded wiring , it is a reversible mod so not going to mess with the warranty if done properly.

Since the vehicle is fairly new and in warranty, it is probably not worth hacking into the light assembly for retrofitting an LED projector. There are some specialists like Lumiere Concepts who do these things if you are upto it.

Understood. Thanks for explaining. I was thinking it would be better to simply get the LED used in the new Amaze (which comes with a LED projector setup) from Honda and put that in the City. Any idea if that kind of swap is possible?

LED headlamp assemblies are a sealed unit usually, I think that would be the case with amaze as well. if it goes out you replace the entire assembly. You could look at the LED headlamp assembly of the top spec city but I'm sure Honda would ask for a very high price for it to discourage such retrofit.

You’re right about the high cost of the top spec City’s assembly. It costs 36k per headlight, from what I saw on Bodomo. It is one of those instances where the additional 1.2L for the top spec was well worth it, but I realised it too late after the vehicle was invoiced to me. Looks like I’ll have to make do with the existing setup.

This is incorrect and I am surprised that you are touting this misinformation. Have you not seen the yellow lights since decades of being on the road in India? I've been using halogens for a decade now and they are closer to yellow with a color temp approaching 4200k at best.

LEDs are more white at 6000k or whiter above 6500k because of the nature of coating on them during manufacture.

Cars in India are allowed to have selective - yellow for fog lamp - ONLY. No other yellow lights anywhere on the outside.

I'm sorry - what does this tidbit have anything to do with your claim that halogens give white light? I think you are confused about something.

I think the regular halogen bulbs on our cars are somewhere around 3500K temperature. LED's are 6000-6500K. The proper 'yellow lights' for fog lamps are around 2700K temperature.

My preferred range is between 4200-4500K for both dry and wet weather conditions which I think mostly HID bulbs cater to.

Correct! Even I prefer the same which is what has prevented me from moving to led lights. I recently found out that if you take a white hid say at 25w and bump the ballast from 25w to 55w the color temp shifts downwards. But one will have to experiment and buying an expensive kit for reliability is not possible as one will have to purchase multiple ballast components to test.

I went the way of extra redundancy at low cost by installing Aux halogen lights instead.

Yes, you can. You need to take care to get one of the new gen LED lights that works well in a reflector or halogen projector. You can find a wealth of information on this topic in Bulbfacts.com.

Do note that there are not many LEDs out there with 55W spec, most of them will have lower consumption.

I am considering to upgrade my Ford Aspire 2017 model's headlamps to Phillips H4 Halogen Bulb 12V 60/55W or go with Philips Rally H4 Bulb 12V, 100/90W, with relay wiring kit. I am a little concerned regarding the reflectors as most of them have mentioned it may affect the reflectiors. If anyone has gone with either of those headlamps mentioned above, please let me know, as driving in rain at night is horrifying with those stock headlamps both in city as well as highway drive.

Thanks & Regards

I have used 100/90 without any trouble in plastic headlamp assemblies, the important bit is to make sure the bulbs are original - be it Philips or Osram. Use the headlamp leveler to dip the low beam when its raining heavily, it will help.

A general query. Are there cars where one can update to 100/90 with a relay without removing or making a hole in the weather cap?

I changed to 100/90s on my Verna a few years back and they had to make a small hole to fit the wire in and so far haven't faced any issues with either dust or rain but curious to know if it can be done in other cars?
