re: March 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Some observations -

1. Kawasaki Versys X300 is officially a flop now. Sales of just two units in the first three months of 2018. Kawasaki really needs to act fast and just take off the mandatory accessories from ex showroom price.
2. Harley Davidson had big offers running for the Street 750 twins and it seems to have paid off. This alone resulted in a huge jump of overall sales from 261 last month to 427 this month.

3. Kawasaki grows month-on-month again. 174 in Jan, 204 in Feb and 299 units in March (I believe their highest ever). Backed by strong performances from Z900 and Ninja 1000. Ninja 300 sales grew by 10x, which probably is the ripple effect from the huge overpricing of Ninja 400. . Z900RS seems to be missing from the list, although one confirmed delivery was there last month in Mangalore.
4. Triumph sales are down month-on-month again. Hopefully the newly launched Tiger range would be able to revive that a bit.

5. TVS Apache RR310 sales finally pickup steam. It has outsold the KTM 390s and Yamaha's R3 - combined. . Hopefully the momentum is sustained over the long run.
6. Speaking of Yamaha R3 - Good show of 96 units this month considering the price range. Ninja 300 outsold it but that could mostly be temporary. CBR250R comes back on the charts with 80 units, behind these two.

7. TVS NTorq 125 is off to a good start as well. 11500 units makes it the third highest selling scooter in their range, Well below Jupiter but only very slightly behind Pep+.
8. Splendor and Activa seems to be switching places every alternate month as the highest selling two wheeler.

9. Slowly but steadily, TVS is increasing the gap with Bajaj and is now very well placed as the 3rd biggest manufacturer in the country.

Perhaps you could also include Kawasaki in this list going forward?

Would it be possible to include BMW's numbers in future? They are doing very well in the Kerala market and the competition is really feeling the heat. By my rough estimation, in the 4 months since they set up their dealership in Cochin, the BMW dealership has sold as many S1000RRs (most of them the higher spec variants that too) as Kawasaki has managed to sell ZX10Rs in the last 2-3 years.

Thank you sir for the suggestion. Shall add Kawasaki to the graph and update the post.

Since these figures are taken from Auto Punditz website, I have no control over the chances of getting figures for the BMW motorcycles.

I have sent the request to the Admin @ Auto Punditz for publishing the figures for BMW motorcycles too.

Doubt they would publish the figures. However, here's one figure that came out in the news recently -

The Bangalore dealership (One of their first three) just completed their first year of operations and celebrated the event with the delivery of their 100th motorcycle.

I'm surprised to hear about the S1000RR though. Most people seem to be waiting for the real generation change - expected by the end of this year. The current model is almost at the end of its life.

Re: March 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

I am quite surprised that the odd-looking Suzuki Intruder cruiser (or whatever it actually is) has found more takers than the Gixxer over the last 3 months. Also, the Gixxer, though very competent, is languishing way behind the FZ16 at the moment. IIRC, it was giving some decently tough competition to the FZ a year ago.

Re: March 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Sad to see that Bajaj has totally lost the plot. From being comfortably placed at second, the slide has been disappointing in the least. In fact, the reason why Bajaj is at fourth spot is because RE has effectively just two bikes and Yamaha and Suzuki have only recently found ways to crack the market. Honestly speaking, I won't be surprised if Bajaj is overtaken by Suzuki in couple of years.

The TVS - Bajaj rivalry is interesting, isn't it?

Five years back - Bajaj looked all set and TVS looked lost. A lot many confused decisions from Bajaj, lack of new products (Not including KTM), confused positioning of products (like the Dominar), exit from the growing scooter segment etc led to their slow downfall. Downfall would be a harsh term though - as they've just been stagnant whereas TVS has been growing. Establishing KTM was probably the only best thing that Bajaj did during this period.

TVS slowly and steadily has climbed up the ladder. They've somewhat gained back mass market trust with their scooter range - especially the Jupiter. And on the other hand - is also going behind the enthusiasts with the RR310. That's like attacking Honda on one end and KTM on the other with the same brand. The future looks rather promising too, as evident in the passion they've shown at the 2018 Auto Expo.

Bajaj could turn things around with the Triumph based RE rival - but thats only a speculation for now.

Bajaj should get an award for most confused two-wheeler manufacturer. Products are launched and discontinued on the fly. Pulsars have lost their sheen, Dominars only seem to be making their own mockery through stupid ads and other models are just lost among themselves.

I wouldn't bet much on this. I am guessing Triumph partnership will result in product slotting above KTMs price-wise, where it is unrealistic to expect more than 1000 sales per month.

Not just that, they even left the 100cc segment, only to return after realizing the volumes that segment still has. Not to mention their ambitious four wheeler project which was shown as a concept at the time the Nano made global debut, and then the project took a huge turn and ended up as Qute (which looks anything but cute) and they still are not sure on how to market their flagship - the Dominar. Also, the lesser spoken about the RS200/AS200 and the way those products were handled, the better.

Re: March 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Dominanar is a good product based on all the reviews I have read. But apparently it's only scarcely sold/available outside Tier-1 cities, is this true? Not sure what's Bajaj's strategy here.
