re: BMW 320d & 328i (F30) : Official Review

The dealer is taking care of the paperwork (ie local address etc ) so i am not sure if i can do the registration on my own since i dont have a personal local address.

Apparently Kun in chennai do lot of PY registration so he saying driving is the only option. I have asked him to talk to the management and see. I am assuming they might come back with additional charges for the flatbed.

He said i can do PDI couple of days before registration which would be around 16th.

I am very much looking to re-register the car in TN in 6 months ( i know its a mess) . When the deal was struck at 38 (37.6) after the TDS , the price of pondy registration was factored in. I gave the go ahead for this deal. Few days later i realised that just for piece of mind it would be better to register in chennai. By this time the paper work was over and they had invoiced the car at the factory with pondy as destination. Aparently now a days when the factory sells the car to the dealer its for a specific state and not open ended.

Anyways i am still feeling my way thru this so hopefully will sort it out soon.

Yes,they do a lot of PY registrations.
The only reason they don't flatbed a car like they are supposed to is to save on sales tax as they'll be liable to pay it once the truck reaches the checkpost.
Yes, they have to bill the car separately for that particular state and they can't give you a car off the lot even if the dealer exists in two states which only works with KUN.
I know a couple of people who've bought their cars from Mumbai and register it in KA or TN and no such issues exist with them.
KUN has their pros and cons.

re: BMW 320d & 328i (F30) : Official Review

Hi can somebody point to me the right link for the VIN decoder for BMW?

i got the VIN today. Two different sites are giving me different year of manufacture.

https://www.bmwdecoder.com tell me its a 2016-06-02

http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi tells me its a 2015 / 07 car?

the discussion with dealer was always for the latest f30 LCI for 2016. I have not taken the delivery of the vehicle yet. not done PDI either.

my vin is WBA8C770X05C35579

okay cool. I am assuming its normal for cars to be 4-5 months old by the time they are made and they hit the streets? Anything i need to consider here?

Yes its fine. Don't worry about it at all. Nothing much to check besides what you would normally check before taking delivery.

That 06/16 is the day when the kit is packed. The actual production date for this unit is 30 Aug 2016. So, good. The car is younger by another two months!

It's not very scientific. I was at The Delhi dealer to fix the Rear view mirror cover. Just took their VIN decoder.

There have been many a panic buttons pressed owing to misinterpreted production date. The way VIN decoder work is that a manufacturers provides the decoding code to the authority like ARAI in India. It is merely a description of what each letter stands for in the VIN.

You write a simple program. Name it ViN decoder and load it on the internet. Where it goes wrong is that many a times, the decoding logic changes and you get a panic attack ... like your F30 is E83.

Next, generally you get the pack month of the VIN only. The actual production could be 1 to 6 months later.

oh that's cool man, thanks, appreciate the effort.

just wondering does the logic change according to the country? in other words a VIN issued in say USA would be different then one issued in India. logically it would make sense.

Guys how do you refill the windshield wiper fluid in the car? I opened the Windhsield washer reservoir cap but there is a rubber seal kind of a thing within it. I didn't know if I should forcibly take it out and hence left it as it is for now. Can you please help me understand this?

Just pour water keeping the rubber thing in slowly and it will go down.

re: BMW 320d & 328i (F30) : Official Review

I was looking at the BMW USA site and looks like they have cars in the lower spec of 180 bhp (328i, 320i) of course they don't have 320D. is that model only for Europe?

they have high spec like 340i etc but did not see anything with 190 bhp which is the new F30 LCI. Just curious.

BMW does have the 2.0 diesel in the US and its called the 328d there. The same way the 530d was called the 535d there.

But they don't get the new 2.0 diesel engine, they make do with the older N47 184ps engine.

re: BMW 320d & 328i (F30) : Official Review

thanks Akshay, that's interesting that the best 2L Diesel is not offered there.

i lived over there for many years but rarely saw the "d" Variants. in fact i never saw anybody use a diesel car! its such a big deal in India.

my college graduate adviser in the US had a 328i and was very fond of it. always used to say he loved that car and will keep it for another 10 years! , this was after using it for 10 years. do people in India have the same faith in these cars to last that long! just wonder.

cheers
krish
