A little bit confused. Which of this is the fender and what is the black piece infront of it.

And there 4 more airbags as well as many other safety features such as ESP with rollover mitigation. Has hill hold too. Not all XVU drivers are as good as Storme drivers.

The fans do make a harder case, Storme is a product which is a Sports Car, yes, you will come across claims of doing very high speeds & the handling to be close to a Linea/Fiesta. And then, there is no match in off roading stakes too.

Its fine to be sarcastic here I guess. Speaking of safety features I pity anyone trusting Mahindra, the same company which touts 6 airbags and god knows what not as safety features and yet advertises 'bold new bull bar, with XUV or Scorpio name' attached to the car as an official accessory right from the showroom. Not sure how a car with a bullbar can activate airbags or even keep perceived crumple zones intact.

Forgot to add...

The best safety feature in the car is the one that helps to avoid most accidents by

- slowing it at intersections and anticipating possible issues
- preventing the car from being too close to the one in front
- preventing sudden lane changes
- preventing overspeeding on highways
- keeping the vehicle speed in the safe zone according to the condition of the road
- ensuring that all seatbelts are engaged
- ensuring vehicle fitness at all times... etc etc.

Its called the "Driver"....

Every other safety feature is secondary in my opinion. What is the point in having a very safe car and an unsafe driver?

Of course there are accidents beyond our control, for which we have to have all supplementary safety features :-D

Seriously OT but can't resist.

The BEST safety features in our cars is the one and only Limbu Mirchi. :D

Tata too sells bullbars at their sales outlet as do other manufacturers, so...?

It is upon indiviual's choice & judgement whether to fit a bullbar or not.

So, an XUV without a bull bar is safe?

XUV fenders are made of plastic. in the event of a head on collision, these simply disintegrate like paper and hardly accord any protection to the occupants. now ask yourself this question- what would be safer- plastic fenders or steel fenders with crumple zones?

Sorry but this is the most misleading post here.

It's a common misconception that 'stronger' is better than 'weaker' when it comes to crash safety. That something like 'hard' metal does a better job than something 'soft' like plastic.

The fact is that in a crash, you have two parts to the equation: deceleration & protection.

When you are talking about the deceleration components (fenders, crumple zones, etc), strength and integrity are incorrect metrics. These are also the metrics you've used in your misinformed comparison. Whether the fenders break into 600 pieces, fold like paper, or disintegrate isn't at all important. What's important is how slowly and safely they can absorb energy and decelerate the car on impact.

What's also important is how gradually they can transfer the impact to the person involved in the case of a pedestrian hit (softer = better), as well as protect them from harder components beneath the car's exterior.

Strength comes in to play when talking about the protection provided by the inner passenger compartment - shown in red here:

Airbags are definitely good to have, but they are SRS, i.e. Supplementary Restraint System.

Before airbags come into play, what is critical is primary safety features- ABS brakes and structural strength of the body shell.

Actually, structural strength is not a primary (active) safety feature.

To date, TML is the only car manufacturer in India that has an in house crash test facility.

That's a good thing to have for sure, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything with respect to Tata cars being more safe or less safe.

Just because manufacturer X has a in-house race-track doesn't necessarily mean they'll be faster than another manufacturer around the Nurburgring.

The black part is most likely a soft bumper designed to absorb an impact on colliding with a pedestrian and ensure there is no contact with metal structure hence minimising injuries.

A fender is a part between the headlamps and front door. Photo is not of an fender.

I guess so. XUV shall be safer for the occupants and pedestrians without the bull bars as the crumple zones and sensors will work as per design and pedestrians will not be hit by hard metal bars.

Sheel, its a forum bro. If we cannot share personal real world experiences on the road, what are we supposed to do here? Discuss technical theory from textbooks and what auto mags and online "experts" write and regurgitate it here?

Methinks its perfectly ok to share our real world experiences in a balanced manner within the rules. It should not come across as fanboyism if its based on fact and not on heresay, nor should it be construed as negativism. Bottom line is that the world is not a perfect place or a socialist utopia where everyone (driver or rider) is equal and all cars and bikes come off the assembly lines as good as the next one.

The forum would be a very dull place if we continually strive to be politically correct and shy away from putting forward our opinions.

Peace. :)

Agree :)

But we also have to keep it factual & real. I am not pointing out anything here [not that I intend to]

And yes, opinions do differ, the way I see things will be different from the way you & others perceive and there has to be some difference of opinion, but if we [me included] will rein our likings, nothing like it :thumbs up

This is what camaraderie is all about and this is why Team-BHP actively dissuades car specific meets/discussions.

Thanks :-)

The metal is the monocoque chasis. The fender is all plastic. The companies manufacturing these fenders for the XUV are in fact touting it as an achievement.

From the tapping test, it did not sound like plastic at all. Tapping on door and fender felt pretty solid.

Mistakes do happen and I did not know this and went by my observations.

Secondly, I think Rehaan has already mentioned what I actually meant in my post with regard to protection. In a slow speed tap, yes the full metal fender might be slightly better but in terms of protection of occupants, the outer fender or any other outer skin does not play a significant role as much as the inner shell does.

This is not just my observation but a known fact.

Agree with you and Team BHP on not having internal brand sub-factionism.

Doc, did you face any issue with the door handles of storme? My 6 days old 2015 storme drives indeed like a dream, but niggles do exist. The first thing I noticed is the rear (left) door handle getting struck. Basically when I open the door by pulling the handle it stays at that position. I have to push it back manually or I cant close the door.

Now its on the front passenger door as well :-(

No never faced this issue, knock on wood. My doors, all 5 of them, are perfect.

Just the window glass off and on makes a thak sound when it hits bottom and top. Its a mood thing. Not always. And more often than not the middle row ones, rarely the front ones.

Other days they are maska smooth and soft.

Your issue sounds like a door adjustment thing.

Yes Doc, it looks like an alignment issue. But it was all fine 6 days back! Here is the image. This is how it looks when its struck. I will have to manually push it back now, or the door wont close.

If any one knows a DIY fix, please do let me know. Going to TASS takes off a day from my short vacation :-(

facing an issue with the Blaupunkt system installed in my Storme. It seems to have developed a mind of its own. Keeps on beeping while travelling through all the options on the screen be it Call mode, radio mode, AV mode. When it happens in the Radio Mode all pre set channels get set to one radio frequency only. The touchscreen becomes unresponsive and I have to use the remote only. I release the headset unit keep the connectors disconnected for a while and then reset it. It sometimes works fine and sometimes its back to the beep. Have tried to clean the connectors with thinner but still of not much help.

Anyone else facing this issue with the unit??
