I have booked the same color and same variant through the Mahindra website and dealer - NBS Andheri. The booking was successful on the first day 11.15 AM. Initial delivery date was Jul-Aug 2025, but received a call from the dealership last week to confirm if I have made multiple bookings, and also if the car is allotted, will I accept it. Basically, filtering out bookings. But still they do not have any info on the delivery days.

Looks like its my time now. Since the last 3-4 days I have been having a knocking sound coming from the steering column when the car goes over rough bumps. And intermittently, i get a tukk sound when the steering wheel is rotated. No fixed conditions for the sound to happen. Just happens randomly.

What was the issue with your teering column? I may be wrong but I think the Thar, Thar Roxx and Scorpio N share the same steering column assembly with different EPS motors in the case of Roxx and Scorpio N.

I will be taking the Thar in at 5k km mark for an oil change and a busted tail light that an enthusiastic biker at a red light smashed up while not being aware of his surroundings. Will have the steering noise looed into as well.

Mine had developed noises and then it became very tight and rigid. A:S:S took the car and they told me they had to replace the column but they didn't want to give more information. Now steering is still tighter compared to the old set up. Sending the car again to them to check.

You are not alone.
Here is mine:

The vehicle was done just 2300 kms when this issue started appearing. I have shown the issue to Mahindra service center and as per them this should is due to steering intermediate shaft loose and needs to be re torqued. They have carried out the service and I found that the knocking reduced a lot compared to before, but not completely eliminated. As I have to return to the base next day I didn’t insist them to work on it again. After another 600 kms the sound is slowly increasing to the same level , yet to show it to the service center again.

Damn. That is louder and far more intense than mine.

Maybe this is the Thar Roxx's version of the suspension LCA of XUV700! Hopefully Mahindra does a recall.

Mahindra Thar Roxx AXL7 AT 4WD – Engine Oil Leak & Limp Mode Within 1000 km

I recently purchased a Mahindra Thar Roxx AXL7 AT 4WD Diesel, about 20 days ago. The vehicle has been driven for approximately 920 km without any issues—until today, when I encountered a rather alarming situation on a short city drive.

What Happened:
I was on a short drive on a smooth, well-paved road and had barely covered 2 km when multiple warning lights suddenly appeared on the MID:
  • AT Malfunction Indicator Lamp
  • Hill Hold Control Malfunction
  • Auto Vehicle Hold Malfunction
I immediately pulled over, turned off the ignition, and waited a couple of minutes before restarting the vehicle. The warning lights disappeared on restart, but the engine was clearly not responding properly to throttle input. RPMs rose beyond 2000, but the vehicle wouldn’t go past 30–40 km/h. The vehicle had seemingly entered limp mode. When I shifted to manual mode, the instrument cluster showed the vehicle stuck in 3rd gear. I pulled over again and, upon inspecting the underside, noticed a visible oil leak.

Initial Diagnosis:
  • The vehicle is currently at the service centre.
  • Preliminary diagnosis points to engine oil leakage from a loose pipe located behind the radiator—likely part of the engine oil circuit.
  • The technicians have confirmed that it is engine oil, not transmission fluid.
  • They will thoroughly check and test the vehicle

Concerns:
It’s quite unsettling to experience this in a brand-new vehicle that hasn’t been off-roaded or driven aggressively yet.

Even more concerning is the fact that a loose engine oil line could have led to a catastrophic engine failure had it gone unnoticed for longer.

A Bit of Irony:

Ironically, Mahindra had organized a visit to their state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, on May 10, 2025, for customers who had booked the Thar Roxx.

I attended the event, witnessed XUV700s being assembled, interacted with the Mahindra team, and shared my genuinely positive experience. At that point, I was thoroughly impressed with the brand and build quality.

To now face such a serious issue so soon after that visit is… disappointing, to say the least.

Appreciate any insights or suggestions. I’ll update as the service centre completes their inspection and repair.

I think you should ask for an engine replacement and not to settle for a repair. You might end up many engine related niggles later due to the engine running on low oil. This is not acceptable on a brand new engine and clear indication that it is a QC issue on their side.

I would suggest call and register a formal complaint with Mahindra directly and follow up with Mahindra than just the dealer. Make sure they share a case ID with you and a Mahindra regional officer assigned to your case. Talk to them directly once they share the number with you over email.

Update

The vehicle is currently at Koncept Automobile, Sector 37, Gurgaon. I sincerely hope I won’t have to visit this workshop again—I’ll just leave it at that.

Last evening, I called the Service Manager to confirm whether the leakage was of engine oil or gearbox oil. He confirmed it was engine oil and promised to call back in half an hour with further details. That call never happened.

This morning, I emailed Mahindra Customer Care, also cc’ing Mr. Anand Mahindra, at 7:43 AM. At 10:18 AM, I received an email response from customer care with a case ID.

However, I received no further communication—no call, SMS, or update of any kind—which left me increasingly concerned. At 12:35 PM, I escalated the matter via email again, this time addressing Mr. Anand Mahindra, Mr. Anish Shah, Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar, and Mr. Amarjyoti Barua, and cc’ing the dealer and others.

At 12:48 PM, the workshop finally created a WhatsApp group, where they shared pictures and initial details—something that typically happens only once a vehicle is formally attended to.

Finally, at 2:33 PM, I received a call from the Area Customer Care Manager, Mahindra. He informed me that the leakage is actually from the gearbox oil, not the engine oil. I had a 7-minute discussion with him, during which I clearly stated:
  • I want a fully reliable vehicle.
  • I am not putting any time pressure on the repair.
  • I wish to deal directly with Mahindra, not the dealer, for this issue.
He has now added himself to the workshop’s WhatsApp group.

Since the vehicle entered Limp Home Mode, with yellow warning lights and no red alerts, I hope this means no significant damage has occurred. The oil leakage clearly began while the vehicle was in motion on the Dwarka Expressway, as there was no visible spill in the parking area.

I have told that I expect to receive complete documentation from M&M detailing the exact nature of the issue, clarification on the reasons, whether it was a manufacturing defect, and a written assurance that no damage was found to the engine or transmission.

More updates to follow as things progress...

Mahindra Thar Roxx AXL7 AT 4WD – ATF Leak Traced to Faulty Hose

The root cause of the ATF leak has been identified as a faulty AT hose, which, although is still fitting correctly, but is coming loose on its own. The vehicle showed no issues during the initial 920 km, including a 500+ km highway drive. As per the service team, the exact conditions that led to the hose failure are difficult to pinpoint, but the part failure did result in significant AT fluid loss.

What concerns me is that the leak happened while the vehicle was in motion on the non-elevated section of Dwarka Expressway — which includes several small flyovers — so it’s very likely the AT box was actively shifting when it lost fluid and hydraulic pressure.

Mahindra has ordered a replacement hose, and they will perform a detailed check on the AT unit once the replacement part is installed. Until then, it’s a bit of a wait-and-watch situation.

On a positive note, the Area Customer Care Manager from Mahindra has been proactive and transparent in communication. I also received the following message via email from him yesterday:

Quote:
Dear ***,

Greetings of the day!

This is in reference to your vehicle reported to our workshop for AT oil leakage issue and our subsequent conversation regarding the same.

At the very outset I truly appreciate your kind patronage with us and sincerely regret for this unfortunate breakdown. As discussed I would like to assure you that I would be personally handling your vehicle during the time it is in workshop to ensure the right kind of updates and repairs are rendered. I am already looped into the whatsapp group to monitor and expedite the repairs. Considering the early mileage case and severity of the situation our technical team has been aligned to look into the details of such occurrence and ensure efficient repairs are being done in the vehicle. Our workshop team will work in tandem with our technical team for ensuring repair efficacy. We will try our best to win back your confdidence in the product and services offered. Assuring you best services always.

IIRK, they diagnosed the issue as engine oil leak than gearbox. Did they give any justification for this wrong diagnosis?
I would suggest push for AT unit replacement on records and not just fix it for now and see it later type of repair . In all probability it’s not a hose related issue if they couldn’t identify it correctly. If they don’t agree to replace the AT, better to get an undertaking in writing from Mahindra that the health of AT is fine and will not cause any reliability or safety issue due to the transmission running without fluid coupling, and if anything arises out of it, they will take the responsibility.

Thank you for your valuable suggestions. I don’t know why workshop technicians initially told me it is engine oil leak. I will address that later.

Reliability of AT box is the top most concern for me as of now, but have to wait till the replacement hose is fixed.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

I stumbled upon this video and not sure whether it's shared here.

I have two ROXX ready for delivery based on what I choose. The beige 4WD and a 2WD. But looking at the complaints I'm thinking of taking different route. Hycross is the one I have shortlisted. I want peace, Mahindra cannot simply provide that.

Quite a concerning issue in the video. Product quality and reliability should be uncompromising for any Brand's long term sustainability. There is something to learn about the high reliability from Japanese brands.

The Hycross may be trouble free, but its torque figure atleast on paper looks terribly less (187 Nm from the ICE petrol motor for such a huge and heavy car ? Its laughable) The 200 Nm from the electric motor doesn't add to the 187Nm from the petrol engine. It either uses electric motor or ICE and cannot use both together.

The Hycross may be quick in the 0 to 100 run, but the low torque should definitely make it lethargic with full load of passengers and luggage on hills especially. Please double check this aspect.

Compare this with the ~370 Nm/400Nm/450Nm from the Roxx/ScorpioN/XUV700, its more than double the torque of Hycross.
A powerful car along with high torque makes easy work of long distance drives during Tours.
Hope M&M make efforts to improve the reliability and make their products niggle free.
