Behram sir,

what can and must be done to improve ride quality?

it has improved since i got new tyres, but lot needs to be done.

should i go in for much famed composite leaf?

although i am quite happy with the eyeballs that i attract and fear that i inject in people driving their cars (4 Accidents - three hit me in rear and one in front, please dont ask about the fate those cars met!!)
i would still love a better ride quality.

please help.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Off late, I am hearing 'taak - taak' sounds from the front suspension upon turning the steering. Not every time but I noticed that it is heard only when going over road undulations.
The sound is similar to what we usually hear in leaf springs. But I am sure it is coming from the front and its not the rear leafs that are sounding. Suspect something in the IFS or the steering assembly.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Hi guys,
I have been working on and off my Mahindra thar and have been fabricating my own modifications till it was possible and now I am pretty satisfied and dont find anything missing on my Thar anymore.

I have done from Front Modular Bumpers with different attachments to side rock sliders to rear stinger bumper to a hard top(original soft top on the outside) to lighting and what not. I have attached my vehicle's pictures to this post.
I would love to hear all your reviews on this vehicle I have done up nicely over 4 years.

Can you post a picture from the front?
Also the "THAR CRDe" moniker on the driver side is shadowed by the Snorkel tubing. You should shift it somewhere else or remove it.

What happened was when i drilled a hole through the fender, I thought of removing it but then while I started to fir it, it actually slipped out of my mind and I realized the mistake later. I find it normal now so really didn't think of removing it anymore.

I am posting the pictures of the front below, I have this real awesome 22" LED light bar in the front which has both Amber and White light as an option and the Amber generates 14000lm light and the White generated 12000lm light, which is pretty cool. The Amber cuts through the fog as the sun does and is really helpful travelling at night in dense fog of Punjab.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

The hard top from the pictures I have posted above is a Moga(Punjab) made hard top which I found very original looking after the modification and gives it the rugged soft top look. I am pretty satisfied with this top as this firstly is CHEAP compared to the other hard tops available and secondly is fully customizable from the inside depending on what ever interior colors of the roof you want. The guy I got this fitted from also gives an option of a sunroof in the front cabin which fold opens to the back but doesn't look that attractive so I just got the basic done. The whole roof costed me under 25k and was the best deal on my Thar. Below are the pictures from the interior of the roof.

Lovely car!! I love the entire look you have given it, along with the swing away rear wheel carrier. One question though, why the soft top covering the hard top? What benefit will it achieve?
Also why so many lights? Especially the huge LED bar light on the roof? Are you into serious night off roading or hunting?

I find the hard top very impressive. Just have the following questions.

1.) Soft cover on hard top. Is this the same standard soft top or you have got a new one stitched?

2.) If original, can this overlay happen on any hard top?

3.) I had a word recently with Taran Bimbra from Bimbra 4x4. Quite impressed by his HT design, would it be easy to use existing soft top over someone else's frp?

4.) Is this hard top design available in Delhi?

5.) And last, how much will be the cost of getting this hard top.
Thanks.
Sanket.

Sukhi, I work and fit all lights and accessories myself and find accessories travelling to different countries, I was in China for meeting a manufacturer of solar panels and there was this one son of the manufacturer who manufactured LED light bars and the more shocking thing was that he was also the manufacturer for the Rigid LED light bars, but due to contract he couldn't sell me those so he got me the same quality in his own casing for individual sale and sold me the light bar in total of $120 which is 7500 approx. And I carried it back in my check-in luggage.

The other good luck I had was that I ended up buying solar panels from him and the first gift he sent me was the LED light bar fitted between the Headlights. The cool part of that is, it works in two different colors.

Thanks Apache, lovely hearing appreciation from a Senior BHPian.
Let me take it one by one.
Firstly the whole concept of this Hard Top is that it is put together using the original soft top, as in that is the outer shell of this Hard Top. The process i saw when they were installing it was,
1st they take of all the original soft top moldings
2nd they use the wide panels connecting B pillar to the C pillar(Which is actually a rod) and screw them to the body and weld them to each other
3rd they weld the frames of the windows to the earlier made frame.
4th they cut the glass window size into the soft top
5th they slip the soft top onto the already made frame
6th they use glue and pack the vacant parts of the frame with glass fibre and thermocol
7th they apply interior cloth to wooden plies
8th they fit the wooden plies already fitted with interior cloth and designs to the first made frame
9th they finish the whole vehicle from the inside as shown in one of the posts above.

Note: There is no leakage what so ever and I have tested it in full pressure water and worst rainy conditions, there also is no rattling and squeaking and last it is as sound proof as a Mahindra Scorpio.

I am attaching the photos of the process below. (Sorry for not having them posted serial wise)

Secondly now about the lights.
I have these lights as I travel alot at night to rural areas in Punjab, and since the roads are narrow, I use the top light bar for a better view. I also use the top light bar while camping in the wild where it becomes easier to use one light instead of many car headlamps. I hunt as well so, yea even then it is very helpful. Importantly I never use them in highways or in the city as I don't want people to get irritated of so much light, max to max I would use my Hellas on the highway for a expanded view. The smaller light bar fitted between the headlamps is awesome in the fog and as I mentioned before they clear the fog as the sun does making travel in the fog super easy in the day and at night.

Sanket.
Thanks alot Sanket,
Answers to your questions pointwise are below:
1.Its the original soft top fitted(but has to be fresh and new else it would leak water)
2.No, this is only possible for a hard top custom made the way it is mentioned in my previous post.
3.No, this wont fit on any frp roof.
4.No, this design is only made in Moga, Punjab.
5.The cost for this Hard Top is really cheap compared to the frp ones. Its 23k for the whole thing and incase your vehicle's roof is a little worn out then 7k for a new original Thar Soft Top.

check and tighten all bolts underneath the vehicle, the A.S.S guys have a very bad habit of not tightening them.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Dear Dilsh3r. thank you for the detailed explanation!! It is useful to see images to follow the process exactly and the hardtop looks more robust compared to the FRP fiber hardtops.
Regarding LED lights IMO, the extreme/pure white range of lights are useless in slight fog associated with rains as we find in the hills around Mumbai, instead the yellowish range of LEDS are far better in providing vision clarity.

Yea exactly how I said before the Amber light(Orangish) is all that use in the fog. It cuts through really well and is very good to use with combination of low beam at foggy nights and rain time.
One thing I like about this roof is that it didn't change the original look of the Thar. And yes it's robust. The good thing is that it isn't welded to the body so can be removed if needed but for putting it back to place will be hard on your own.
