Dear Dr. Kannan,

Getting Carello head lights is next to impossible. Even on eBay. What has been provided here is just the rings for replication. You can contact "fiat 1957 Kolkata" to have one made for you too.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

Here are some photos I took this week of the progress to date. Looking good!

All the upholstery has been done and the seat and back frames repaired and painted. The mechanical work is progressing as the body work is being done.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

Beautiful. The fiat 1100's make me nostalgic of my childhood days. The smell of the upholstery and the plastic. The sweet sound of the engine and the exhaust. The chrome ring at the center of the steering for the horn. Phew. Just cant forget those details of the fiats.

I came so close to buying one in a decent condition a few years back, but things did not work out.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

Congrats on the restoration! The rear is bit overdone with the Restorer's badge, the "I" badge and the reverse(?) light. Nevertheless, wonderful ending!

Very nice and pleasing result! I still owe you the 1100 script on the ignition. Just can't find where I have kept it.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

Hi,

Congratulations! That's a wonderful piece of restoration, hats off to you.

As mentioned in the thread, the rear is a bit overdone with those stickers. It masks the real rear beauty of these cars. Will post pictures of my recently restored 1955 millecento for your reference.

Great to see the vent duct in the engine bay, is it in working condition? I will need your guidance in procuring this, the only thing missing in my millecento.

Enjoy the attention when you take this beauty for a drive, it makes you feel good for all the sincere effort you put into the restoration.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

The best part is the ability to actually find all the parts to restore this. Nowdays Premier Padmini parts are a problem.

Re: Kolkata - 1957 Fiat Elegant

FIAT'57'Kolkata, that is beautifully done. However, agree with some posts above that the rear is kind of overdone. Please, if it appeals to you, take out the restorer's badge (with due respect to all the people involved in the project) and that 'I' sticker.

It takes me kind of down the memory lane when my father used to drive a Fiat 1100 Delight. It was a white 1100D made in 1967. Served us as late as 2004 but we could not see it rotting and sitting inside our garage after 2002 when the Zen became our primary car. It was sold to a person who immediately put it to some good use and took it for some long journeys. I will try to get some pics of those old times.

Nothing Sir,

My father sold his trusted 1981 Premier Padmini Deluxe BE last year to a scrap dealer for Rs. 14,000.

It was parked outside the house. Major problem in Patna was engine parts, carburettor parts ( Solex ), brake parts.

There were a lot of memories.

Now my friend Rajiv Pratap Rudy has his fathers 1972 model 1100 D parked in his govt. bunglow. Doesnt drive it, needs a new solex and brake parts.

Maybe I will take it from him and keep it in the farmhouse after restoration. Cant risk driving it to patna from here 1000 KM and no AC.

Option no. II

One retired govt. officer Mr. Yadav, who lives down my road in Patna, purchased a brand new Premier Padmini in 1995. He died in 1998. Thid fiat was driven for just 600 KM.

His son sold it to one Dr. Badrul Hassan for Rs. 24,000 in 2002. An investment of Rs. 4000 in a new battery and Dr. Badrul Hassan who also lived in the same colony drove it for 1000 KM. Once up a pole outside his house.

He died last winter.

Now this fiat is lying there with no takers.

Should I buy it and keep it ? Will I get the parts to restore it ? THis one will be the newer model with Vaccum advance air intake.

Dear Shahidbhai - of course you should buy both the cars and restore them. I'll help you with the parts. I use my 1960 Fiat BMC8903 very regularly when I am in Mumbai. It is only 54 years young!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar
