Yes, you're right about my ID!
Pennant was sold long ago- and I'm afraid I only have 1 car now, which is my 1964 Standard Herald (same one seen in my avatar!)
You're welcome to get in touch anytime though!

Re: 1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration

Any news on the current status of the car? I am really interested in seeing the final outcome.

Re: 1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration

May 2018

Some updates after a gap - the car is finally painted, and looking good. While I haven't seen it in person as yet, the colour seems to have turned out exactly like I'd hoped.

Great to see the paintjob done at last! Yes, seems to be the right Powder Blue shade in my monitor atleast!
BTW, if I may point out though, the gap between the door and front wing in this pic. seems rather 'uneven', ie. wider at the top and narrowing down towards the bottom? Or something to do with the angle at which the pic. was taken?

The panels aren't finally aligned, that's all.

Re: 1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration

Picking up where we left off.

May and June 2018

The somewhat attractively styled dash was not offered in body colour, but in a dark metallic grey of sorts - since this was in good original paint we decided to leave it as is, to atleast preserve some of the original finishes. While I understand it may look at bit out of place, I really like it this way.

1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-02.jpg

A new wiring loom was made and ready to fit.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-03.jpg

With the body finally painted it was time to start fitting the trim. Trim clips pretty close to the original were sourced.

July 2018

The petrol tank, like the rest of the car, was full of rust. It was cut open to aid restoration.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-05.jpg

All the door hardware was coated and ready to fit.

August 2018

The wheels too were still in original cream paint, and a custom shade was matched using this as reference.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-08.jpg

The wheels were carefully stripped down, primed and painted.

New radial tyres were fitted, with cross plys no longer being an option sadly. How I would have loved to see the car with thin whitewalls.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-14.jpg

Modern master cylinder units were adapted to take the original brake and clutch fluid reservoirs, so everything looks stock under the bonnet.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-10.jpg

The newly painted fuel tank was fitted, with a new float.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-11.jpg

As more fittings started to come together, the finish line finally seems in sight.

1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-17.jpg

The steering wheel was in good shape but covered in fine cracks, so was refinished in original black.

April 2019

While I had hoped to retain the original upholstery, it was too far gone to save. Using the original as reference, the seats were reupholstered in as close a match as possible. Whoever said there's just one shade of black is mistaken!

Door panels also redone to match. Fastening screws with collars just like the original were added.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-23.jpg

A new headliner was installed, and black door channels were fitted. The original white ones were too far gone to reuse, and there is no alternative for now.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-24.jpg

I guess the original carpets would have just been moulded rubber matting, not sure. This was the most practical alternative.
1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration-25.jpg

The interior finally completed

Window scrapers were adapted from what was available, and most of the fittings were now completed.

The car in good company

Re: 1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration

November and December 2019

With most of the fitting now completed, the car was turning out exactly as I'd hoped.

Road trials began in earnest, and somehow water got into the fuel, but outside of that the car ran well. Another carb was sourced, plugs replaced and the car ran even better.

Re: 1974 Standard Gazel - Restoration

July 2020

And over 5 years after buying the car, she was finally delivered home early this morning. The car has turned out superb, and Pankaj's efforts really show. While the car isn't perfect, it probably is finished better than what Stampro's quality control turned out

The colour looks very pleasing in person, and honestly looks so different in each kind of light. Amby hubcaps are temporarily fitted until we source the originals in good condition.

While the dash does stick out noticably as faded/patinated and unrestored, for now it remains that way since its the original finish. Should look better once the glove box lid is fitted, which is amongst the last little things left to do. For now I am enjoying driving the car around, albeit limited runs in lockdown. Onwards to the next project!

To really enjoy this 5 year old thread, you have to start from post #1, the last few updates just do not do justice to the kind of work and patience, that has gone into this project. Congratulations !

Looking forward to another exciting restoration thread from you !

I must thank Karl for his endless patience with this build !
5 years is a long time indeed ! The Gazel is one of the few cars that has seen all 5 workshops that I have had to shift in the past 5 years !

The Gazel is a surprisingly fun car to drive, and I can only hope that more are found and saved.
I will miss the non-fussy drives I had on this car, and yes, passersby surely give the car a second look and a stare, to boot - whether out of appreciation or shock I do not know
