Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

Dear Karl,

Awesome pics that do justice to the period of the car and the backdrop! Thanks a lot for sharing! Admire all your restoration threads for the depth of research and pains taken to bring the cars back to great shape!

I notice that the AA badge has no curved yellow back plate. Without that, on the grill, the badge is not easily visible. I know that the original plates are prone to rusting and get eaten away. May be your tinker can make one for you. You might want to use "Canary Yellow" spray paint (Can), and some clear lacquer to finish off the back plate.

Hope to see the car in person sometime!

Yup, the back plate is missing. I'm just waiting for one to turn up - its not a big deal to fit. I do have a sample which will help in getting one made, but I'd rather wait for an original. I'm not even sure on final placements of the two badges.

I think a replica made here will also cost about the same including painting, as long as shipping from UK is free

Maybe maybe not! And even for that you need an original sample!

I have an original sample, but badly rusted, pitted and has a hole in the flat part at the bottom - but I can measure the thickness of the plate at the edge and I can get the profile made - I will post a pic in the evening

I am going to restore the original as well

The other badge on the car is outstanding and pales the AA Badge in any case

Here is the pic. The hole will be covered by the badge so I don't know if the hole needs to be patched up.

Was exposed to elements for 40 odd years so it's nice to see it actually has survived.

Thanks very much - coming from you that means a lot. Been using the car regularly, doing fine so far. Off to Pune to participate in the rally this weekend.

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

Amazing job Karl. I am inspired and considering to restore another 1100 S. I have found a seller and have also managed to get few pics from him. Can you please have a look and tell me your views on the conditions of the car. The seller is a fourth owner but the car seems to be in a decent. I have been told by the seller that it is in working condition. However, few parts, such as the door handle on the right side, are missing. Would appreciate if you guys can help me in evaluating the condition of the car and the possibility of restoring it. Thanks

If I might 'interject' here, I personally don't reckon the car needs restoring in the near future and maybe just a polish and touch-up where required! If it's a Bombay car, it appears remarkably clean with no alarming tell-tale signs of corrosion atleast in your pics.- but then, anything can look better than it is in pics.!
Note: the bumper overriders have been changed to padmini ones, and originals are reasonably tough to find these days!

Re: Restoration - 1963 Fiat 1100 Super Select

Thanks for feedback Stanher. I agree, it looks in a good shape in pics but will inspect thoroughly before buying. I am planning to getting it restored in Mumbai so I am hopeful that I may get some of the original parts which are currently missing.

Will keep you all posted!

The car seems to be in good nick looking from outside, but would need a through lookup to decide to go for full restoration or just a touch up. Some of the original bits would need sourcing.

Also the trim below the rear wind screen do not belong to Super selects, in case you do not need her (after buying). I am ready to take it.
