Yes Karl, its in the vicinity of the Garware Bridge (off Deccan Gymkhana area). Its a 1965 model and in fact, these originally came with the protruding (from the Veglia speedo slot) bracket with the Yenkay speedo.

The owner could have replaced it with a Bajaj 150 handlebar, given the rickety Bajaj speedo it has now.

The scooter has fond memories associated with it and now that dad is here with me for few days at Pune and the topic started, why not try procurring the parts and send it with him to WB. But apart from not getting the correct seller for spare parts, the other challenge is getting the correct part. It seems "to me", that the LML Vespa XE that was sold here in India was a customized version of the P125X. I am not too sure, but deciphering this on the base of the looks only. Can anyone of you please share your thoughts on this.

With regards to restoration, not much has to be done and I am sure if i can get a good pair of hands, the engine can be re-tuned to its original glory. But the body parts are breaking now and they need to be replaced.

Below is how I plan to progress on this restoration (Cost vis-a-vis time)
  • Immediate requirement : Complete external body parts including of headlights, bulbs etc.
  • Intermediate : Complete wiring.
  • Last : Electrical and remaining electronics. Our scooter will then become a oldish newish Vespa XE

What is the status on the XE's restoration? Do you have shops at your place from where parts can be procured? I am looking for certain body parts for my Vespa XE.

My friend got it sorted mechanically - though there wasn't much that was needed to start with.
The scooter had most of the trims intact - what was missing was the 'Piaggio' monogram and the original headset - both of which I managed to procure from an abandoned XE.

My advice- now that tis mechanically sorted out, suggest to your friend to just try and run it as is for a while before he thinks of taking it apart to restore it. This way, he'll get to know all the weak points as well, which can be tackled when he finally get to restore it properly.
Too many people get over-enthusiastic about restoration of their vehicles only to realise mid-way how daunting it actually is and then give up; the dream project ends up as a ghost project! Are the documents updated btw? FC? Insurance? These are far more important issues to tackle than cosmetic restoration.
BTW, this is the same cream XE with the 'hasty' paint job right?

Exactly what I told him; took a while to convince, but he finally came around.

That was the first thing we did, actually. Papers are up-to-date and the scooter's transferred to my friend's name.

Re: Vespas and Vespas only

Hi Sean, Scootering Magazine UK had an article on the APSL Factory a few years ago, in it was mentioned the sighting of various odd smallframe/largeframes mixtures lying about in the APSL factory. I always wondered if there is a link with the Taiwanese smallframes. GNAL for example had some sort of collaboration with PGO, as peculiar headsets were identical. Let me know if you need any other info for your book.

The second, manufactured in Indonesia by PT Danmotor Vespa Indonesia is the P100TS. Both models are built on the same platform as the Vespa 50 Special, and use a slightly differnet chassis with a left side cowl glove box. Both have a four speed manual transmission 100cc two-stroke engine. It is more likely that the model you've heard of is the PL170 manufactured from
1982-1987. If you have any more questions, just ask.
