Dear Sudarshan,
This may sound idiotically stupid to you, but, the more i read the more I get confused.
What is the difference between the Series I, II, III & Series 2, 2A & 3?
The confusion is getting compounded by the fact that literature in the form of Haynes Manuals are available for both.... :(
Please clarify.

Pending experts opinion, I would hazard a guess here.

Series I, II, III refers to the typical Land Rovers - the work horse version

Series 2, 3, 4 etc referes to the Luxury versions of Land Rovers - Freelander, Discovery etc - typically with the all metal body and almost on an SUV mode.

I now await the "authentic" clarifications

Here are some basic identification markers
Series I (Series 1): The Head lights are between the Mudguards in front of the radiatior. In 1948 The grill was in front of the Headlights & the meter plate was rounded on either side, upto 1954 the door was tapered in section opposite to the hinges. after th 1954 the Door was cut straight on both the verticle sides. all series I except 1948 had rectangular Meter Plate

Series II (Series 2): Same Meter Plate And Head light configuration but the Body was rounded just below the window's lower side for the whole length of vehicle.

Series IIA: Same metal meter plate and the curved body but the headlight has been put on the mudguard.

Series III (Series 3): Plastic meter console behind the steering and the headlight remains on the mudguard.

also I will be giving info on old landy models ( by year )

Dear Ram Sir , AFAIK , Series Land Rovers mean produced before 1985 ,

So, Series I = Series 1

Series II = Series 2 & likewise , these are called as series vehicles ,

Then came stage 1 ( looks more like the defender )

after that all those modern SUV types followed , Discovery also has models ( by year ) but they are simply called as Discovery 1 , 2, likewise

I am giving a list of posts in this thread & what you will find there ( In pics )

# 1 = my Landy , its a Series 2a
# 2 = a late model Series 2a ( headlights on mudguards referred as 'wings ')
# 43 = Series 1
# 45 & 74 = Light weight ( military model )
# 52 = modified
# 54 = defender
# 64 = the famous Darjeeling Series 1
# 66 = the famous elsa , series 1
# 68 = in a expedition ,series 2 ( 0r 2a )
# 73 = Series 3 note the grill
# 80 = Pic 2> series 2a , pic 3> series 3 , pic 5> series 3 ( kpa 143 plate )
#84 = Series 3
# 95 = Series 3
there is also a video from gods must be crazy that is a series 1 vehicle

Some more details

1948 - 1951 Series 1 ( or I )

1952 - 1954 series 1 ( 80" wb/ wheel base )

1954 - 1956 series 1 ( 86" wb ) { also 1954 - 1958 series 1 , 107" wb } { station wagon 1956 - 1958 only }

1956 - 1958 series 1 ( 88' wb ) { 1956 - 1958 series 1 , 109'" wb }

1958 - 1961 Series 2 ( or II ) , 88" wb also 109" wb

1961 - 1971 Series 2a ( IIa ) ,88 " wb & 109" wb

1971- 1985 Series 3 ( III ) , 88" , 109'" , III B , One ton

1983 Land Rover 110 was introduced ( beginning of defender type era )

Of all the models series 2a & three have many similarities

this bunk is very famous in Bangalore, It is located at Hudson circle, opposite Hudson Church, i dont have their number though...

Sighted one Land Rover Defender LWB (similar to Sudarshan's one) at a garage near the Pune bypass at Wakad. The garage is situated on the left on the road that joins the Wakad junction, before the flyover.

I was in a bus and could not take any photographs.

Externally, the Land Rover looked good.

Any updates on this LR at the Wakad Junction?
Was it at the garage for work or just parked there.

If i am not wrong its white colour Land Rover. This garage is owned by friend of James (wickedwheels). Owner has worked with M&M and has good knowledge of Mahindra Vehicles.
BTW i couldnt see LR from last one week.

Hey guys! Thank you for this excellent thread. I have been an avid LR lover ever since I saw these machines in my childhood. Can anyone tell me how much a decent Series III 109 Diesel station wagon will cost and if anyone is willing to part with one?

IMHO , a series Land Rover's ( 5 door station wagon ) 'scrap ' value is 50 K even without papers . A fully restored series Landy may cost 10 to 12 times more . Now its up to you ( how badly you want it ) & the seller ( how badly he wants to sell it )

You can try your best, luring a fella like me ( to sell mine ) & find out a wholly foolish price , which will make you run away:D


You have asked a difficult question , try selling an old landy & you wont find a buyer --- try to find one for sale & you wont get one -- thats the situation about these vehicles

But one word of caution ; beware of vehicles without any papers or with faulty paperwork , thats the only thing where I cant help you .

A SWB will also do but I am only looking for a Diesel and preferably a 5-bearing post 80 model. I am not interested in ones that need to be rebuilt or whose engine/boxes have been changed.
