In 1966, with the introduction of the Silver Shadow/T, a new system of chassis numbering began using three letters and four or five numbers. The letters did not denote small series or batches of cars as earlier chassis letters had. Rather, these letters were codes following the pattern below. The numbers were just sequence numbers. In this book, these cars are listed in numerical-sequence order. An entire chassis number looks like this: SRX2442 or CBX6566 or DRB17463. Use the chart below to read these numbers. 1stletter = body style 2nd letter = make 3rdletter = position of steering/year C = coachbuilt 2-door coupe (R = Rolls-Royce, H = Home (right handrive)throughout, B = Bentley drophead to 6646) G = PV I, 3 speed X = Export (left handdrive) D = drophead from 6647 A = 1972 (lhd). L = long wheelbase with or Without division B = 1973 (lhd) P = Phantom VI J = Carmargue C = 1974 (lhd). S = standard steel saloon D = 1975 (lhd) E = 1976 (lhd) F = 1977 (lhd) G = 1978 (lhd) K = 1979 (lhd) L = 1980 (lhd) Thus; RX2442 is a standard steel saloon Silver Shadow Rolls-Royce with left hand drive; CBX6566 is a 2-door Bentley with left hand drive; and DRB17463 is a drophead Rolls-Royce Corniche 1973. Change/Feature introduced at sequence no.; First Silver Shadow/Bentley T 1001 2 door coupe 1148 2 door drophead 1698 U.S. Federal Safety Standards 6000 Lwb saloon 6599 Engine size increased from 6230 to 6750cc 9200 9350 Corniche coupe 9770 Corniche drophead 9919 Camargue 16648 Silver Shadow II 30001 (rack & pinion steering; revised facia; lwb version named Silver Wraith II) Corniche/Camargue with mineral oil hydraulics 50001 Silver Spirit, Silver Spur, Corniche, Mulsanne, Mulsanne L, Eight, Turbo R, Continental, Silver Dawn, Arnage & Silver Seraph In 1980 when the cars above were announced, a radically changed system of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) type chassis numbers was applied to all Rolls-Royce built cars. These 17-digit alphanumerics hold information on each car in coded form as follows : - country of maker , marque, line of manufacture, body style, engine type, occupant restraint system, model year, plant of manufacture, position of steering, and sequence number. Given in full, these numbers look like this: SCAZS42A8 BCX01795. RROC, following an informal company policy, reduces this string to an 8-digit shorthand. In addition, RROC adds a dash between the letters and numbers to make clear instantly that the car in question is a Silver Spirit and not a Silver Shadow. The 3 letters in the shorthand form are: 5th, 3rd, 10th. Thus SCAZS42A8BCX01795 has the relevant letters underscored and becomes SAB-01795. (For the Silver Seraph and Arnage models, the 3 digits in the shorthand form are the 4th, 5th& 10thdigits.) 5thletter = body style 3rd letter 10th digit = year A = Silver Dawn A = Rolls-Royce A = 1980 B = Continental R B = Bentley B = 1981 C = Corniche coupe C = Red Label C = 1982 D = Corniche drophead D = 1983 E = Eight/Brooklands E = 1984 F = Brooklands LWB F = 1985 G = Flying Spur G = 1986 J = Camargue H = 1987 K = Azure J = 1988 L = (Silver Spur/Mulsanne L, LWB or K = 1989 Arnage, Seraph) L = 1990 M = Phantom limousine M = 1991 N = lwb saloon w/o div. N = 1992 (Silver Spur/Mulsanne) P = 1993 R = TURBO R = 1994 S = saloon (Silver Spirit/Mulsanne) S = 1995 T = Phantom landaulette T = 1996 U = Continental T V = 1997 Z = Bentley Continetnal SC W = 1998 X = 1999 Y = 2000 1 = 2001 Thus SAB 11111 is a standard Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit built in 1981, and is car no. 11111 in sequence. DAB-03804 would be a Corniche drophead Rolls-Royce built in 1981, car no. 03804. Brewster and Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork Terms Most bodies built in the U.S.A. to fit Springfield or AJS/AMS cars were built to one of a series of standard designs. Rolls-Royce of America, Inc., used specific names for these designs; RROC uses them also. The list below gives the generic equivalents. Arundel limousine Ascot tourer Avon sedan Berwick sedan Buckingham limousine Canterbury limousine Carlton town car Chatsworth town car Croydon convertible coupe Derby tourer Dinsdale limousine Dovedale limousine Harwick sedan Henley convertible coupe Huntington limousine Kenilworth sedan Keswick town car Lonsdale limousine Marlborough town car Mayfair town car Newmarket convertible sedan Newport town car Norwick limousine Nottingham sedan Oxford tourer Paddington limousine Pall Mall tourer Piccadily roadster Pickwick limousine Playboy convertible coupe Regent convertible coupe Riviera town car Rowdale limousine Salamanca convertible town car Savoy town car St. Alban town car St. Andrew town car St. Martin town car St. Regis town car St. Stephen landaulet Speedster tourer Stratford coupe or convertible Suburban limousine Sudbury sedan Tilbury sedan Torpedo sedan Trouville town car Warwick limousine Wimbledon coupe York roadster Springfield Chassis Numbers Until 1923, engine numbers were coded to show year of production followed by sequence within the year. Thus, 2156 is engine 56, made in 1921. Starting in 1923, engine numbers were coded to show year of production and chassis number. Thus, 21548 is an engine made in 1928 (first and last digits) and fitted to chassis S154FR (middle digits). |

You may be right. The provenance of this car could be investigated. I was told this was a Mysore car. Often even owners seem to quote incorrectly. Please do help in correctly identifying car histories |

| yes, looks like a hooper empress line, these lamps on a wraith are not so common, usually they had p100s, these were usually found on the MK VI bentley. thse lamps make it look like a dawn. personally, i prefer the dawn to the silver wraith Last edited by awini : 23rd March 2008 at 10:55. |

While on the subject of breakdown legend has it that once a customer pointed to a starting handle on a Rolls equipped with electric self start and commented: " How come Rolls has provoded a manual handle on a car with electric start? Does Rolls not think the starter is reliable?" To which a witty salesman promptly replied: " Sire the chances of ever using the manual handle are about as remote as you ever needing to use the nipples on your chest" PS Karlos may I request you to please repost in this thread all Rolls Royce pictures you so kindly have posted elsewhere Last edited by DKG : 23rd March 2008 at 11:20.

something is not right with these cars, i feel all have been rebodied, except the green 1913 ghost, which has been in the same ownership since 1928. the shape of the fenders and body do not match the period of the chassis. |

the red Ghost chassis is pre 1924 but the body looks late 20s or 30s and the Torpedo bodied Ghost is pre 24 but the mudguards and hood look suspicious. As for the bus…. Very big family. However, two of these cars with the same bodies are featured in a period picture in Manvendra Singh's book on page 206 and 266. I think in all likelihood the Maharajah of Bharatpur may have had these type of bodies commisioned. We can research if these were done in India or came like this The rear of the blue ghost looks too odd but then again if these were built like this in those days in India can't say!! All the same we can research more info on these cars Following are pictures of some cars from the Mewar collection which obviously had special conversions Some more cars from the Udaipur royal garage The following car was not originally a Udaipur car, presently part of the collection though Last edited by DKG : 23rd March 2008 at 16:23.

Senior - BHPian | The Jodhpur cars The present Maharajah of Jodhpur has done a splendid job of converting the awe inspiring Mehrangarh Fort into a museum. The Mp3 audio guide is a wonderful way to experience the fort and I strongly recommend a visit to Jodhpur as a tourist. Umaid Bhavan palace, the largest art deco home in the world serves as the Maharajah's residence and the major part is converted into a hotel. As several of the Maharajah's cars have been featured in magazines and considering the family being so proactive in promoting tourism I feel it is appropriate to share some pictures of his lovely cars Here is the fabulous Windover Continental The folding step that swivels out as you open the door And the spectacular 1927 Phantom 1 chassis 94 RF in Aluminium finish. This car has mosquitoe netting in windows. It also features double sunroofs and Stephen Grebel lamps Last edited by DKG : 23rd March 2008 at 16:51. |
