Storing and carrying your helmets safely

We’re not just particular about the helmets we buy. Many of us are equally particular about how to store them safely at home as well as carry them around while on the move.

Agree wholeheartedly.

I have been using Speed Merchant's helmet bag which fits ADV helmets quite well and also has a bottom space to keep gloves et al.

I’m not 100% sure but I think I’ve seen a really nice helmet bag from LS2 itself. If they’re giving that with the helmets here then ideally one should stick with that itself

The LS2 helmet bags are given complementary only with the top end Carbon helmets.

What about MT Revenge 2 ? I bought an Axor Apex for daily use and I am having terrible neck pain. I dont feel that pain in shoei or smk.

As far as I know MT Revenge 2 has not been updated to ECE 22.06 in India. Globally it is. Thunder 4 SV is 22.06 rated and same with LS2. If you're having trouble with the weight of the helmet try MT Hummer as well. Comes at the same range as that of the Axor and 22.06 rated as well. The only thing it doesn't have is an internal sun visor.

My 2 month old LS2 MX436 Size S is up for sale. The pain persists.

Securing a normal helmet for the daily commute

One thing I always had an issue with was what to do with the helmet that one uses for the daily commute. Especially if one is using multiple means of transport, like bike+Metro. Carry it with me on the Metro? Bit of a pain. The scooters provide under seat storage, but usually only for one full-face helmet. Secure it on the bike, but what about dust and rain.

One solution that doesn't involve buying expensive helmet bags or bike top boxes, one that I've been using for the past few years and seems to have worked well so far is using a normal chain, a number lock, and plastic bags.

We secure both helmets to the rear pillion grab rail using the chain and number lock (number lock so I don't need to carry an extra key just for the helmet lock). Put one of those big, thin garbage bags around each helmet and tuck it nicely. The helmets have remained dust-free and dry even in heavy rain, multiple times over years.

You can have a look at the MT THUNDER 4SV and LS2 FF800 STORM 2. Both are around 10-12k. LS2 will have D rings, MT will have a micro ratchet strap. Apart from that really good helmets. The quality levels will be higher from SMK. Please check them out in store.

Thanks Chiefpk, I checked SMK (non carbon) and LS2 in nearby store, the difference was clear. LS2 build quality was great. Need to check MT helmet. MT looks better atleast as per the pics in website ;).

Just FYI, store at Hyderabad are offering good discount on SMK.
LS2 are in limited stock. MT is not available in most of the places here. Anybody from Hyderabad who can suggest any place or have any reference please let me know.

Will be visiting Powerstore, Rynox
and Helmet world store this week.

Thanks and Cheers,

During mid 90's, my father got me a bike and the second day me & mom went for shopping for a nice helmet. I never thought or imagined of riding the bike without a helmet. Although all my friends hardly wore helmets during those days, but somehow I was completely averse to the thought of riding a bike without a helmet. Those days Studds was a branded ISI marked helmet, so I picked a very nice one "Studd design by Porsche", it was a neat cool helmet with the visor going inside the frame. I'm not 100% sure about the costing (can't remember now) at but it was a whooping amount I guess around 1000rs during those days.

Almost during the same time, a close friend of mine also got a Studd helmet Ninja, I liked his helmet, because the front can be opened for more air during slow rides, but I have already one, so just gave up with the thought. And he wanted to buy the one which I had, but unfortunately the stock was over and he couldn't find one off the shelf (no online shopping those days). So he asked me if we could exchange helmets, I instantly said YES and we exchanged.

Story time - I have had multiple falls from this bike (with helmet) and have bruised my knees and elbows at many occasions, all of those happened at pretty low speeds and the head was always protected by the Ninja helmet. Mind you during those days, elbow/knee guards where alien terms. Then I took this bike with me to the college during my engineering days.

Around 20+ years ago, Some of my friends were doing their engineering at Pune, so it was my fortnightly routine to ride on my bike from Mumbai to Pune during weekends, a section of newly built expressway was opened up, so the old section road was pretty empty and fun to ride. It was a 2 lane road with no dividers in between. One fine day, after the college, I started to ride towards Pune and just after crossing Khopoli, I was behind a dumper doing around 60, there was another truck coming from the opposite lane, I was tailgating the dumper pretty closely (huge mistake) and waiting for the truck in the opposite lane to pass, so that I can do my overtake pass. As soon as the opposite lane truck passed the dumper and I was about to make the overtake, the dumper in front slammed on the brakes (till date I don't know why).

My head got hit at the corner of the dumper (head and that dumper corner were at same level), yes rear ended the dumper, with the impact, the grip on the bike handle was lost, and I went flat on the bike seat, mind you still riding the bike after the impact but with no control, it kept going straight, till I regained the control. Luckily never fell down from the bike. Looked into my rear view mirror and could see the helmet (the same Ninja) cracked from chin to the back of the head, with nose and mouth numb and bleeding. Thanks to the chin strap that it didn't fly off at the time of impact. I wasn't feeling any pain but I wanted to ascertain the level of injury, so pulled up in a village across the road, got down from the bike and headed towards the hand pump where few village folks where washing clothes, the moment I removed the helmet and they saw my face, they were in shock, called their male counterparts, meanwhile I washed my face on the handpump while the women folks where shouting get Kapus get Kapus to their males, that day I learned Kapus is cotton in English, cleaned my face and checked myself in the mirror, nose numb, mouth numb, but no pain. Stuffed the cotton in my nose and in my mouth, behind teeth and took a lot bunch of cotton in my pockets, called my friend in Pune to keep a first aid kit at home, as I will take another few hours to reach.

The sun was already setting down and I did put on the same helmet (Atleast it protected me from the wind blast) and proceeded towards Pune, as soon as I reached my friends place, I removed my helmet and he puked right there seeing my face. This was when I saw my face in the mirror, swollen broken and scary with battle marks, but still with no pain. He said, this doesn't need first aid, we have to rush to the hospital. He took me to the hospital, the doctors did a CT scan and few more scans and X-Rays, luckily no internal head injury, the visor was broken and had cut my lips, a part of visor was shattered and stuck inside my nose, which the doctors removed. By this time, I had started to get fever. By this time the X-ray report came and doctors said 2- fractures in nose bone. I was like damn NO. That day I realized, the nose fractures heals off its own, when they sent me to a cosmetic surgeon, if there's anything to be done. Gave me painkillers and few more medical stuff, swelling started to subside eventually in few days with no fever and the battle scar on nose is for life. Apologies don't have pictures, it was Nokia 3310 days, with no cameras. Have stopped riding the bikes anymore, but I'm sure will ignite the passion someday again.

Lesson learned - Don't tailgate and I could only type this here today because of the habit of wearing the helmet religiously. It protected me as a last line of defense. And I bought another "Studds Ninja" from Pune for my ride back. So IMO a quality helmet is the necessity of the day, but going for a super expensive GP level helmet is kind of unnecessary unless you are doing some insane speeds on the tracks, public roads are anyway not meant for those speeds. And last don't forget to use the chin straps and have a snug fit, this is the most crucial thing when you want a full 360 degree protection from the helmet. Oh yes, the bike was RX-100.

People are ready to spend thousands and even lakhs on phones and other luxury goods but where helmets are concerned in most cases they want the bare minimum possible.

ECE may be a good baseline but what’s the harm in buying something better if one can afford to do so. Is an SMK/Axxor/MT at the same level as an Arai, if both are ECE 22.06?

It is absurd to say that a high quality helmet is not needed unless you are doing high speeds! You can die even at a speed of 20kmph if you head suffers a blow in critical areas. The skull is not uniformly thick all over. Some parts are as thin as paper and highly vulnerable to trauma. There is no guarantee to survive any fall from a motorcycle, irrespective of the speed. The only thing protecting the head is that helmet.

I understand premium helmets are out of reach for most people in India and it is perfectly ok to get a helmet which has a baseline rating such as ECE 22.06. But it’s not correct to state that the premium helmets are unnecessary.

If baseline is all that matters then we should be happy with any sub 10 thousand rupee mobile which will do everything we need and meet a baseline. Yet we happily spend on more expensive phones. The same logic should be applied to helmets too.

The most affordable ECE-22.06 lid is from Axor

This is a very decent option to start with. The positive side is that the local Trinity (Studds, Vega and Steelbird) helmets have a 22.06 option. This is great for those seeking in this range!

It’s good to see our home grown brands reaching beyond ISI and getting the ECE 22.06 certification. Kudos to Axor for pricing it competitively.

Just wanted to know if there's any website that shows ECE-tested helmets. I've not seen any that certify that these are the helmets that have passed ISI or DOT certifications. Shells may also just have a sticker that says ECE 22.05 or 22.06

It is nice to see Indian brands get helmets with ECE certifications and possibly also sell them in those markets.

Picked up a Shoei Hornet ADV helmet Singapore last week. Friend of mine was traveling there so asked him to pick it up from Chong Aik International. After VAT refund and discount it costed me 35k.

I had to upsize it to a Large. I wear a KYT NFR in medium size.

How did you get the sizing right? I’ve heard of Shoei having fitment centres where you get the sizing just right. Without doing the fitment check, is just head size measurement enough to gauge the required helmet size?

Don't think Shoei has any fitment centres in Singapore. My friend and I have always had 1 size difference so it was easy for me . he picked up XL and I asked him to pick L for me. It's a huge risk to be honest. It's not only head size coz these brands make helmets for different head shapes depending on the market.

I got an unopened Airoh Pinlock 70 anti-fog insert put up for sale. I ordered 2 pieces from FC-Moto by mistake. The pack is factory sealed and not even opened once. It fits Airoh Valor, Spark, ST501 & ST 701 helmets.

Here's the link to the ad on classifieds

I have a question to those who brought their helmet by flight. I have to take my helmet on a flight for a motorbike tour. The carrying bag that came with the helmet is just a sleeve and no way to carry it. Won't go into a backpack (carry-on) or suitcase (check-in). Googling revealed some helmet bags (like Viaterra) around but too pricey for an occasional use. Now I am thinking of replacing my backpack with a duffle bag, which is not the most convenient.

Can someone who has done this please share their experience please?
