Plan for expressway from Lucknow to Ballia; 6-lane highway to pass Azamgarh, reach Bihar border |
According to a draft of the state government, the proposed 382 km six-lane expressway, the longest in the country (until now Lucknow-Agra expressway is the longest), will pass through Azamgarh, Mulayam's parliamentary constituency, to reach Ballia, on the UP-Bihar border. Sources said the expressway may bypass Sultanpur which lies between Lucknow and Azamgarh. It may, however, touch Kagazipur which is between Azamgarh and Ballia. The state government had asked a consultant to study the feasibility of the project and provide a final draft along with the alignment of the expressway by July. |

1. Will this help ease traffic from the east to the north? Just asking as now looks like the entire UP east to west would be easier to travel as long as your near any of these roads. 2. Interesting that UP govts have gotten into expressway politics though. Real estate play maybe? |

Quite so A glance at the Google Map version reveals the multiple zig zags in the first leg from Agra to Lucknow. The second leg's alignment (from Lucknow to Ballia) is an approximation of the alignment if a reasonable man were to do it. No arguments about the why's of Lucknow to Ballia - that may be a family matter after all. However, as is likely, reasonability would be sacrificed at the alter of electionomics. So, won't be surprised if this alignment too ends up being a joke. Attachment 1337787 |

C@Alpha1; More likely they are the family constituencies. Kannauj & Mainpuri for sure. |

There is a possibility that mutiple zigs zags are in place to accommodate the towns with higher economic output (which require fast transport, the last mile connectivity to smaller towns and villages achieved through National Highways and State Highways)? You know an empty expressways would be the most stupid investment of money. |

One does not normally snake the expressway itself through the centers themselves, unless the reason is more than economic. In fact, zig zags will make for greater travel time and more fuel consumption. |

Yes - likely what the prof has said. In terms of the best economics - what works (or has worked in multiple countries) is a tree like framework - where the main trunk is the expressway and feeders (state roads) off it connecting to such centers of population. It works until the center grows and touches the expressway itself. E.g. I-95 in USA which has now been engulfed by New York, Boston, Washington D.C. or closer home how the GT road has become a local road. One does not normally snake the expressway itself through the centers themselves, unless the reason is more than economic. In fact, zig zags will make for greater travel time and more fuel consumption. |

Now all culverts etc. are being made 8-lane. The highway will be six lane expandable to eight at short notice. |

Thanks for the link, clears up a lot of things! And no expertise there, was kinda free in office so just joined the dots on the map. ;) Here is another version based on skdking's post. Google could not find the village 'Neval'. I do see a Purey Neval (Gonda) but that is further away from Lucknow. . .... |
