avoid panipat and kurukshetra in the evenings - especially when you are returning on a sunday.
also, just out of chandigarh towards ambala, there was a broken bridge a few weeks back due to which it turned into a one-way.
plus, ghiggaur is hell as tsk mentioned due to loads of flyovers being constructed by NHAI.

Suman , It all depends on what time do you plan to head out of Delhi ..... if its real early and you planning to tuch Chd by 7 am -- just go straight thru !!! Wudnt you want your safari to experience some dust , pot holes , etc ???

Also I feel that instead of going via Rajpura as advised above , its better to turn of just before Ambala and come out straight at Panchkula -- dunno the distances but that ways you miss Zirakpur as well , coz the lil stretch between Zirakpur and Panchkula can also get one bogged down in traffic . Also this route has a better scenic drive ..... and a road where you can check if the Safari is good fun or an elephant ;-) !!!!

Where you staying in Kasauli ..... ??

Cheers

Have a great trip sir, BTW I recommend you visit the Old Graveyard with Colonial graves,However I would advise to avoid the taking the children if any, as the area has slopes and might be slippery.
I Just love Colonial Graveyards and visited almost everyone in towns I been to..Not some facination with Dark Forces, I like the inscriptions along with the Aura of Age...!

The Church is simply superb at evening time, You also try the Gurkha Fort and Choor Chandani Mountain in the Area...!

Thanks Wolf, Khaadu, Navdeep, Tsk, Rohit & Goldie for all your inputs.

Realistically speaking, we'll leave home around 7.30 am, one things for sure, I'll go via Rajpura & avoid the Ambala-Zirakpur road.

Will let you guys know how it went.....Khaadu, thanks for the Ring Road tip, I'd completely overlooked that ....imagine going all the way round!

Yah, I remembered after I posted! Thanks for the info but 5 am is way too early - kids unlikely to get up so early since their exams would have just got over (even 7 am is a tough ask!)

Staying at Ros Common (HPTDC).

So which pump is this, is it after I take a right turn at Rajpura or is it on NH1 itself before the right turn?

Its on NH1 itself. Actually there are BP company pumps on both sides of the road, so drive into the first Pure for Sure once you cross Shambhu. I usually go to the one with lots of trucks, they usually have very good fuel.
Truckers know the best!
I suggest carry STP with you and empty the bottle into the tank when you fill up at rajpura. Its a 250ml bottle costing around 250rs.
It will take care of your engine for the next 1500kms or so.

Its an injector cleaner. Good for highway use when you are worried about poor quality fuel.
