Mumbai - Kolkata : Route Queries

Hi folks,
Does anyone have any information about a Mumbai-Kolkata road trip?
How long it takes, safety concerns, condition of roads, rest stops etc?

Would appreciate any information.
Thx!

2,000 km, if you are a very fast driver, 2 days, else 3.
Ideally, target Nagpur on Day 1, Sambalpur (Orissa) on Day 2.
I have done this drive twice.
In case you want the log book of that trip, please let me know.
Road is OK, not the best, very boring, but mostly good througgout except in soem portions in Orissa, especially in the Keonjhar-Kharagpur section.
I have been told that the Jharkhand-West Bengal border area (near Kharagpur) is a bit unsafe, although I never had any problems myself.
There is good lorry traffic throughout.
Large towns en route are: Nashik, Malegaon, Dhule, Jalgaon, Khamgaon, Akola, Amaravati, Nagpur, Raj Nandgaon, Raipur, Baragarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Kharagpur.
You travel through some of the hottest areas in India.

In my past trips, I did on Day 1 (Darjeeling-Kolkata-Kharagpur), Day 2 (Kharagpur-Sambalpur-Raipur, this because my car broke down and I had to spent 4 hours in the garage) and Day 3 (Raipur-Bombay, 1300 kms).

Another occasion, I drove from Bhutan to Bombay in a bike non-stop with only 1 night halt in 4 days and 3 nights, when Day 1, crossed Kolkata, halted at Keonjhar, and Day 2/3 was on teh road throughout all the way to Bombay

I've done the Durg-Raipur stretch (50kms) god knows how many times... one of the busiest highway stretches in the country, because of the steel plant in Bhilai and the allied industries in Raipur. The road has been recently converted into a 4 lane and is super smooth, but night driving is hell... there are no lights yet and the entire stretch is thickly populated with people of all ages crossing the road at their whims and fancies without ANY consideration for traffic.

You are welcome to stay at my place in Raipur... plus any advice u need on car servicing etc. at Raipur and Bhilai will be provided for free

@hvkumar: thanks for the inputs. must say you have enthu, particularly with reference to the Bhutan-Bom bike trip!! If you have a soft-copy of your log book, would love to see it... would be a great reference point I'm sure.

@planet, shuvd: we'll discuss this offline... need to thrash out the pros and cons.

No Indra, he didn't. His engine made that trip though, on the back of a truck.

Hardly luxurious! It arrived in a crate, upside down, with some of its components broken (some sensors, dipstick, oil cap). The crate didn't have a "This side up" sign by the way.

Hi guys!!

Reviving this thread again! I am onsite on a project in Kolkata for the next couple of months. So, planning to drive down from Pune to Kolkata.

Any clues about the present condition of the route suggested by hvkumar? Any info will be appreciated!

Thanks!
