I'm driving to Calicut via the BMEW on Dashami day (24/10). Would like to know how the festival affects traffic. I'll be starting from Bangalore at around 9 AM give or take 30 mins.

My Saturday drive was peaceful. Started from Yeswanthpur around 8 AM and reached Srirangapatana Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary by 11 AM.Traffic till Bidadi caused delays. There is big traffic jams around Kengeri Bus terminal, ring road ,NICE road intersections. So, plan accordingly.

Expressway drive was comfortable and I could manage 50-60% of it with cruise control on fast lane. I was bit surprised with less traffic. May be ,people left early morning or previous night for other destinations like Coorg,Wayanad etc.

There was long traffic jams reported on Thamarassery Ghat road yesterday due to vacation traffic and 2 breakdowns.

My return journey also was comfortable. Started by 8:30 PM and reached Bangalore around 11PM.

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Today there was plenty of fog , enough for vehicles to stop for about 30 mins in the Mysore to Mandya stretch even as late as ~ 6:30-7. It was quite chill and given tomorrow's forecast one can expect the same.

Drove to Calicut on 24/10 and back on 26/10. There was some traffic while going out - while return was peaceful. Cruise control set to 120 for most of the route and I did the EW in 65 minutes both times.

The two-wheeler ban is very helpful. The biggest risk I saw was EW drivers doing manoeuvres to exit to towns via entry ramps.

There is an "opening shortly" Nayara on the MRR - which will be the only pump on the semi-circle that is EW junction to NH 766 junction.

Thanks for this. I will be doing a very early morning drive next week and this gives me an idea of what to expect. I plan to have a reasonably slow drive starting from Bangalore at around 2-2:30 am. Worst case scenario, get off the expressway and wait for the fog to clear a bit.

On the way to Mysore. Saw cops behind plants on the median with a speed gun. Maddur stretch. Drive within speed limits.

Today (29th Oct) there was a speed gun on the way to Bangalore. They were communicating vehicle numbers to another set of cops who had setup barricades a little further to catch the over speeding vehicles.

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Made a Bangalore-Calicut-Bangalore trip over the week end. Started on friday afternoon. In the onward journey entered the highway at around 2:30PM and got out by 4:15PM. Around 20 mins were lost due to official calls (where I had to park my vehicle and take it, plus a 15 mins break for taking the packed lunch). Return was yesterday. Entered the highway at Mysore end at 11:00Hrs and got out at NICE Road at 12:15Hrs.

This time the traffic police was out there on speed enforcement. I think it was the Traffic police unit of Maddur who was doing the honours. They were checking vehicles going towards Mysore. But neatly done. I saw barricades being placed to slow down vehicles and around 6 cars were all neatly standing in line (on the extreme left) to pay the fine. Around 300 mts ahead of this, on the median behind some bushes (with an umbrella to protect from sun) were sitting two police men with the radar gun. The speeding vehicle would be detected by the radar camera atleast from a distance of around 800mts. And then the operator relays the number on the wireless/radio. Ample time for the police men in the police jeep to ask the vehicle to pull over.

Saw them in action yesterday. Overall I felt their approach was quite okay. The safety of every one is factored in. The speeding vehicle does not know that they have been "hit", and then jam the brakes. Police men also don't have to jump in front of the speeding vehicle, risking their lives.

The official speed limit is 100 kmph and several boards are installed on the median, on the overbridge hangovers where it is visible to the road users.

Did you miss that?

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Last week when coming from Kannur on my bike, we decided to take the Mysore highway to check how it is with a bike. On-ward journey was via the Nelamangala and Hassan route (longer by 45 kms overall). I had done the Mysore highway on the car a couple of weeks coming back from Ooty and it was very smooth sailing.

But, boy the experience with the service road for the bike was horrible. I counted some 48 speed breakers in total. Couple of places the service road is non continuous (due to railway lines) to the main highway and takes you into towns of Ramanagara and others. Overall I will avoid using the bike to go via the Mysore route, I saw a couple of cars too taking the service lane who I am sure must have regretted their decision.

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Traveled to Mysore and back on Sunday. Road-wise, absolutely no issues anywhere. Its a dream road. Two observations below:

1. I saw about 5 cars barreling down in WRONG direction while coming back to Bangalore. I am very upset that this is still happening. They are driving with impunity.

2. Very heavy traffic from Mysore to Bangalore even from 10-11PM. May be due to Sunday evening? You can characterize this as bumper to bumper traffic that we see in Bangalore (given the speeds the packing is not dense but numbers are). I already feel that this should have been a 12 lane instead of 6 lane. Cars after cars. Never ending stream of cars..of course overtaking you from left right and center.

As much I am aware, also checking on the Radarbot app on this route, there are no speed cameras reported on this route, so far.

Highway patrol units with their speed guns are found manually stopping vehicles mostly near maddur area.

All vehicles' fines can be checked online these days from Parivahan site.

cheers

Is Radarbot an app like Waze? In that case the radar locations is updated by crowd sourcing - i.e regular road users report the camera/radar positions.

From the way I saw the Traffic police unit of Maddur enforcing the speed laws, they were collecting on the spot fines. The vehicles were getting pulled over. The new hand held devices given to the traffic police can also be used as credit card swiping machines. So fine can be paid by credit/debit card.
