Hello,

Im planning to visit Singapore & Malaysia(KL,Genting,Langkawi) in June.

I need to make a customised package with the travel agent. It would be good to have some inputs from you people to get and idea on how to customize the package in the best way.

1. Whnat would be the ideal no. of days to spend at each Singapore,KL,Genting & Langkawi.I dont want to miss the must visit places/spots.

2. At Singapore - What woud be the best way to reach Sentosa Islands, get tikets for Sentosa Islands(including the ferry and other stuff), Universal Studio,Bird park,Under waterworld.

3. What other places are must visit in Singapore

4. What would be the best travel mode tpo move between Singapore and KL.

5. What are the must see places in KL city

6. Is one day sufficient to travel from KL to Genting Island and Batu caves and back to KL on the same day? How long what would te best mode to reach Genting Island and Batu caves from KL. Are there any tikets to be booked for the cable car in Genting?

7. What are must see places in Langkawi and how long stay is recommended there.

Thanks.

Re: Travel queries for Singapore and Malaysia travel

@sathya_j2084

Please see my suggestions in bold.

I need to make a customised package with the travel agent. It would be good to have some inputs from you people to get and idea on how to customize the package in the best way.

Actually you can totally arrange this on your own using the net. One can easily save about 40%.

1. What would be the ideal no. of days to spend at each Singapore,KL,Genting & Langkawi.I dont want to miss the must visit places/spots.

Singapore -3 to 4 days. KL - 2 days. Genting 0 (thats right zero) days. Lankawi - 2 days. I would suggest to check out M'asia first before S'pore, because the other way will be a let down. If you are planning to see the places mentioned in point 2, Genting will be total waste of time. It is simply inferior.

2. At Singapore - What woud be the best way to reach Sentosa Islands, get tikets for Sentosa Islands(including the ferry and other stuff), Universal Studio,Bird park,Under waterworld.

Public transport from hotel (underground metro and bus) should be easily available. You can take the ropeway to Sentosa. Tickets can be bought on spot.

3. What other places are must visit in Singapore

Marina Bay area, Suntec city, Orchard road. For an Indian experience the area around Mustafa. You can simply discover Singapore by going around and taking it easy.

4. What would be the best travel mode to move between Singapore and KL.

The railway is relaxing. You can purchase tickets from the net sitting in India.

5. What are the must see places in KL city

Petronas tower and KL tower. The aquarium is also good. There are some nice local markets to check out.

Please give the Chinatown a miss if you want to make the best use of time. This is how the Chinatown looks: A fake watch shop, next to a fake leather bag shop, next to a fake toys shop, next to a fake sunglass shop. And repeat.

6. Is one day sufficient to travel from KL to Genting Island and Batu caves and back to KL on the same day? How long what would te best mode to reach Genting Island and Batu caves from KL. Are there any tikets to be booked for the cable car in Genting?

You will get bus from KL to Genting and come back on the same day. Ditto for Batu Caves. The bus ticket can be purchased at the station. Service is good.

I know I was harsh on Genting. After Singapore, it feels like a major waste of time. Hope this helps.

To be frank, there is no need for a travel agent. You could do it all by yourself and even save some cash. Book flights from Yatra, Cleartrip, MakeMyTrip or the one giving the lowest fare. A friendly tip, go to the nearest Crossword or any book store and pick up "Lonely Planet - Singapore & Malaysia". Will cost you 1000 bucks but you won't miss the hidden jewels of those countries Also, when booking hotels, check out reviews on TripAdvisor and you could save money by booking hotels online.

Considering you have generous amount of time at hand, you could complete Singapore in 3 days, KL 2 days, Genting 1 day and Langkawi 2 days.

2. At Singapore - What woud be the best way to reach Sentosa Islands, get tikets for Sentosa Islands(including the ferry and other stuff), Universal Studio,Bird park,Under waterworld.
You could book a rental cab who would pick you up from your hotel every morning and drop you at the places you want to visit. You could tell them to book the tickets for you in advance.

3. What other places are must visit in Singapore
Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park, Mustafas & Sim Lim Square (Shopping), Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay, Orchard Road, Snow World.

4. What would be the best travel mode to move between Singapore and KL.
If it's an overnight journey in the itinerary, then by bus. If during daytime, then by plane.

Quote:
5. What are the must see places in KL city
KL city tour which includes chocolate factory and the leather factory, war memorials and the biggest mosque of Malaysia (don't recall the name). At night, you could go visit the pubs if interested You could also go above the Petronas towers (remember, there are limited passes, you so need to wake up early).

I suggest you spend one night at Genting. En route from KL to Genting, you could have a stopover at Batu caves which can be completed in an hour max. You can go all the way upto Genting if you hire a car or else tell them to drop you at the foot of the hill where the tickets for the cable car is available.

Quote:
7. What are must see places in Langkawi and how long stay is recommended there.
2 days. Though we skipped Langkawi since we were short on time, it's an incredibly beautiful place. You can book return tickets to Langkawi from KL.

Re: Travel queries for Singapore and Malaysia travel

Malaysia and Genting:

The city tour will include
1. King's Palace (there's nothing to do here. They wont take you inside. You can see the palace from out and click a snap with the guards LOL)
2. Temple (A different atmosphere and new to us. A bit of shopping here where you can get idols and stuff. I was lucky to see a wedding in action here. That was nice)
3. Chocolate Factory (Good stop and nice place to get some stuff for people back home. Bit expensive though)
4. Independence Square
5. War memorial (Short history lesson here)

Petronas Tower not to be missed (I know no one is going to miss this). Good shops inside but very expensive. Make sure you take the sky bridge at dusk so that the city is well lit up. It usually gets crowded fast so make sure you book it in advance. I missed this the first day.

There's a street next to the "Radius International" hotel (That's where I stayed). This street is lined with pubs and you can spot some exotic rides here.

Avoid Chinatown. You get all cheap stuff here and the place is very crowded.

You can check out many plazas surrounding the Radius International (Bukit Bintang). Many VFM stuffs can be bought here.

Genting is just 2 hours drive from Malaysia. To try something different, take the cable car to Genting. You will have to drive till there. You definitely need to stay atleast one day here. Very good climate and lot many things to see here. You can see the worlds biggest check in counter here.

A small theme park with nice rides. Many famous eat outs and good options to stay. Casino is a must visit spot. You can try some luck here, although I lost some bucks while trying.

Another good place to spot some exotics.

I'm attaching some pics for reference.

Re: Travel queries for Singapore and Malaysia travel

I would suggest you spend atleast 2 days in Langkawi and 1 day is sufficient to cover the major places in KL ( Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, Batu Caves). You can give Genting a miss. For travelling from Singapore to KL, you can either travel by Bus or train or flights. I suggest you try all 3 atleast once. You can travel overnight to Langkawi from KL by train. You need to get off at Kuala setar after boarding the train at KL Sentral. Then you need to catch a speed boat to Langkawi which takes around 40-60 min, but is a great experience in itself.
In Langkawi, rent a car, get a map and tour the island yourself. There are some great beach resorts at Tanjung Rhu and some other beaches that are unbelievably beautiful, but will set you back by atleast 5K-6K per day. If you want to save some cash here, stay at Bella Vista hotel in Kuah town. Its a very good hotel and you can get a room for around 1K per day ( Airasia offers pickup and drop and discount on room bookings at this hotel if you book a flight with them to Langkawi ).
There is a travel desk at the hotel, where you can book tours like the Island Hopping tour, snorkelling, cave visits etc. If you don't have the time, atleast do the Island hopping tour. The Langkawi cable car is also a must visit ( highest cable car in the world, the climax of the movie Don was shot here ) and there are a few beautiful waterfalls and lots and lots of amazing beaches.

Hi All,

Thanks for ur quick responses. It seems that most of the local spots could be covered withot help of a travel agent. The prime reason Im goin thro travel agent is for visa and hotel booking.
Here is my draft itenary

1. Day1 - Depart to Langkawi. (pls suggest a good resort closer to the beach. My travel agent promises to make arrangements in Holiday Villa Beach reasort)

2. Day 2 - Roam around in Langkawi with a hired taxi. Are there any particular spots/beaches to be seen?

3. Day 3 - Depart to KL.(thro air). Reach KL(Pls suggest a good 3*/4* hotel that would be easily accessible for trains/bus/metros. My travel agent promises to make arrangements at Hotel Grand Season)

4. Day 4 - Local visit in KL(Petronas tower - pls suggest on where to book tikets to go to the top floor)

5. Day 5 - Hire a taxi.Go to Batu caves and then proceed to to Genting.(where do i book tikets for Genting and cable car.If a night stay at Genting is recommended then i need to chek out at KL hotel and is carrying luggages in cablecar comfortable enough? If not i need to come back to KL hiring a taxi from Genting.Which would be the best alternative?)

6. Day 6 - Proceed from Genting/KL to Singapore(Bus/Train still confused. Though i wud prefer train would it be worth the time travelling? )
Pls suggest a good hotel in Singapore. Local travel in Singapore

7. Day 7 - Head to Sentosa Isaland(where cud i get tikets and what are the other things for which tikets are to be bought)Can universal studios, waterworld, bird park be combined with Sentosa or is it a seprate trip

8. Day 8 - Shopping and roam around in Singapore

9. Day 9 - Depart back home

If required i can also extend a day. Please suggest.

Thanks

You can book hotels online. Just get the Visas from the agent. You'll save plenty of money

Here is my draft itenary

1. Day1 - Depart to Langkawi. (pls suggest a good resort closer to the beach. My travel agent promises to make arrangements in Holiday Villa Beach reasort)
Are you flying directly to Langkawi from India?

2. Day 2 - Roam around in Langkawi with a hired taxi. Are there any particular spots/beaches to be seen?
Suggest you hire bikes. Langkawi is virtually traffic free and the roads are awesome for biking. Don't miss the cable car ride to the Langkawi Sky Bridge (for the bollywood fans, DON 2 climax was filmed here). Here is my video from the cable car ride: YouTube - Langkawi Sky Bridge Cable Car Ride

You can't book tickets online. You need to queue up early morning (really early). We reached around 8:30am and the tickets for the day were over. So you can do it only on day 5. Instead, visit the KL Tower at day 4 night.
PS: You can visit the petronas towers any time, tickets are needed only for the sky-bridge.

There is a aquaria at the Petronas (KLCC). But if you are visiting the singapore one at sentosa, give this one a miss.

Like many have said before, skip Genting especially since you'll be visiting Sentosa. No point staying in an amusement park as well Visit Petronas early morning to get tickets and based on your sky-bridge entry time, visit Batu caves.

6. Day 6 - Proceed from Genting/KL to Singapore(Bus/Train still confused. Though i wud prefer train would it be worth the time travelling? )
Pls suggest a good hotel in Singapore. Local travel in Singapore

Metro is the best for local travel in singapore. Saves a lot of time. You can buy prepaid ezlink cards from any station for $20 and use it for any metro or bus. Keep recharging the card whenever required.

7. Day 7 - Head to Sentosa Isaland(where cud i get tikets and what are the other things for which tikets are to be bought)Can universal studios, waterworld, bird park be combined with Sentosa or is it a seprate trip

You can get all info about sentosa here Home - Sentosa

8. Day 8 - Shopping and roam around in Singapore

9. Day 9 - Depart back home

If required i can also extend a day. Please suggest.

Thanks
Since you have time, you may go through my friend's blog on our singapore & malaysia trip last year. Let me warn you that it is very lengthy and pic heavy.

Yes, and it's also close to Mustafas. I stayed at Albert Court, which is just next to the Sim Lim.

In Malaysia, Corus is a good option. It's just walking distance from the Petronas and is centrally located.

If you are into sanctuaries, I suggest you replace Langkawi with Taman Negara. Or maybe you could add both if you have no restrictions on time and budget.

Re: What to see in Malaysia and Singapore

@Sathya- Here are my recommendations.
3. Day 3 - Depart to KL.(thro air). Reach KL(Pls suggest a good 3*/4* hotel that would be easily accessible for trains/bus/metros. My travel agent promises to make arrangements at Hotel Grand Season)

There are many hotel in the area known as Bukit Bintang. We stayed at Radius International (Pic attached in my previous post). Although a star hotel, it's pretty old. So expect old school kind of rooms, but pretty reasonable. Plus, if you dont like Malaysian food there are many Indian restaurants right outside the hotel. The hotel is near the metro station (say around 1 km)

4. Day 4 - Local visit in KL(Petronas tower - pls suggest on where to book tikets to go to the top floor)
Tickets can be booked inside the towers. It is for the sky bridge and its at the the middle of the buildings. Go in the morning and book the tickets for the night.

Its always better to book the rooms early since it might be crowded. I got booked through my agent. What we did was, hired a taxi and took it till the cable car station. The driver dropped us there and he drove the car to the exit point of the cable car. Then we drove to the hotel. The next day he was there to pick us up. All these were included in our package.

Re: What to see in Malaysia and Singapore

Hi,

thanks for all your valuable inputs..My travel agent says 19000INR for 2N/3D stay in Langkawi-4* category hotel(excluding airfare) for two people with a 1/2 day island tour. When i checked the hotel's website the charge just around 12000INR.

Are reservations made online using credit card safe enough, bcz i think i could save a lot of money if could book hotels on my own rather than paying to the travel agent.

I visited Malaysia and Singapore a few years ago and used my credit card to book hotels in KL (Marriott), Genting (Genting Hotel_ and in Singapore (Rendezvous). I also used credit card to book a car for the course of our stay in Malaysia. I didn't face any issue.
