Thanks, RS
From Shirdi, you can directly reach Sangamaner by first taking the Sinnar road, but turning off after some 10-odd kms.

Instead of turning off at Sangamaner, go on NH50 towards Pune till Ale. At Ale turn right to Malshej Ghat. If interested, you can take a small detour to Shivneri which is one of Sivaji's forts.

Road via Malshej is quite scenic and in good condition currently, except that it gets congested between Murbad & Kalyan. You have to go through one small part of Kalyan town to reach NH3 (Nasik-Thane-Bombay highway).

However, I would still suggest you stick to the conventional Shirdi-Sinnar-Nashik-Bombay route.

Re: NH4 and NH17 updates??

Just wanted an update on NH4 (between Bangalore to Pune):

1. Which is the longest stretch without petrol bunks in between?

2. I saw, (on google maps) - many pumps show - I have to drive into some city to get to a bunk!
Are the bunks attached to NH4 (and are they in abundance?)

My full tank range is 400kms ( but I would like to fill up at 350 kms itself!)

Kindly advise, (urgent please!)

Ace.

I travelled Blr-Mum a couple of years back so this info is a little dated. You shouldnt have to worry about petrol bunks, you have quite a few of them, you shouldnt have to travel without one for more than 60-70km.

That was blazing fast!
Well, HV sir had already told me not to worry about the bunk (frequency),

I was just looking for any updates -
as I heard - one of my friend on the same route was in a tiff at night, as 3 pumps in succession did not have Petrol! (they had diesel only!)

If that's not frequent problem, then I am good!

Thanks ethanhunt!

(^ OT: nice handle! lol)

EDIT:
@ Ampere: Thanks for that! Don't know how I missed that thread!

Re: NH4 and NH17 updates??

BTW if you are travelling from Blr, you wont be able to reach MH with your first tank. So fill up in KA but dont do a tankful. Do enough to reach MH border and save some money

Mangalore-Udupi-Kudapur 4-lane is almost done. There are diversions, but road is quite good. So no issues there. Beyond Kundapur esp Baindur/Hemmadi, its quite bad. Honnavar-Ankola-Karwar is good.

Another Palakkad- Kollur, may be another Goa is on the radar during rains, this July. Hope Kozhikode- Kannur – Kasargode –Mangalore is decent enough. Last time around [2012 July], it was fine but prior to that, there were no roads existing in and beyond Kannur all the way until Kundapura.

Is price of petrol in Karnataka nogher than on Maharashtra?
I found Mumbai petrol price to be more than 5 rupee higher than Kerala prices.

Re: NH4 and NH17 updates??

Plan to move from Mumbai to Karwar via Belgaum day-after (09 Jul 14) early morning in my Optra Magnum 2.0 LT riding on Michellin Primacy 3 ST. However, was worried about the monsoons setting in :( should I take a flight instead?

Any advice by fellow members will be highly appreciated. Also, how much time should I factor-in for the travel if I start at 0500h form Mumbai?

Roads are all good.no problems.Take the NH4 til Hubli and then take the NH63 via Yellapur-Baleguli Cross-Karwar.

Panvel to Pune Bypass is 2hrs
Pune Bypass to Kolhapur approx 5hrs
Kolhapur-Belgaum 1hr
Belgaum-Hubli:1.5hrs
Hubli-Karwar:3hrs

Total:Approx 13hrs with stops.

Plenty of places to eat and refresh enroute.Plenty of fuel stations also available.

Re: NH4 and NH17 updates??

^ Many thanks for the quick response. Highly appreciated. Hinges me towards driving down.

I was worried about water logging and low visibility. Maybe traffic jams.

I think NH4 will be in good condition. but how is Hubli-Karwar route? Especially since I may land up on it by night time.

Re: NH4 and NH17 updates??

^ Additionally, the Hubli-Karwar de-tour is costing almost 90kms additional travel. How about the route via Khanapur and Londa? Or is there any other route?
