Sadly, the airline staff does not understand this. Once I was on a Indigo flight, and I had switched off the phone function and was using my mobile to play games but the cabin crew asked me to switch off. I tried to explain her that it is off but she did not agree and forced me to totally switch off.

Tell me about it!! Happens all the time with me. I have given up now. I switch it off even before the craft starts rolling on the tarmac!

About using GPS during the flight, its an interesting question. I had asked a similar question in the other thread on gps etc. Would like to know more on this. Is it safe to do so?

While at it, your post does make sense Thad.

EDIT: I searched on the net for an answer and found this.

Is it Safe to use a handheld GPS Receiver on a Commercial Aircraft?

A definitive look at the question including the Government Rules and Regulations on the Subject

This is a question that generates a lot of comment and confusion on the newsgroup, but few people have the necessary experience to give an answer based on reasoned engineering experience. Here are my answers and comments.

I went through the link and what I understand is that its technically safe to use GPS on board but if the airline regulations don't permit, then its wiser not to argue.
Thanks a ton, Dry Ice. Whew... that surely makes me feel better.

Re: Post your GPS logs/tracks here!

What is the best software to track a route on my Nokia phone? I know some people use Nokia Sports Tracker or Endomodo Sports Tracker, is there any other software.

Go to GPSEd.com. Thats the best IMHO and is free and you have tons of option to share the route if you want to using the GPRS/3G data connectivity. It has a online viewer so that people can track your current location if you want to share. Work to track offline as well without a Data Plan.

My suggestion is the same too. In fact the track I have posted in this thread was made using GPSed.

Another software that that lets you record tracks, and load pre-recorded gpx tracks : Orux Maps.

the best part about this is offline maps. you create a map on your computer using TrekBuddy (from various sources - Google Earth, Bing maps, map-quest, etc) and copy to your SD-card. The lack of routing on this piece of software can be offset by loading gpx tracks (an alarm goes off when you go off-course).

The app gets overwhelmed by all the map data on long drives and force closes, causing loss of tracking data. I suggest turning off the phone data connection while tracking. The app will still track the course. The downside is that the map will not be visible.

Useless app. Its limit seems to be 250-300 kms worth of tracking data, after which it WILL force close and lose all the data. Any other app which is reliable?

Re: Post your GPS logs/tracks here!

Try oruxmaps or androzic. I have used both of them extensively without issues.
You can check out the offroad gps navigation(track navigation) article in the 4x4 excursions section.
