Read through last couple of pages of this thread. I have a Coastal Karnataka trip planned for the 2nd October weekend. Had Karkala and Agumbe in my original plan. We really enjoyed last time driving though the jungle. Looks like this time either either I have to cut these off from my plan, or go via Udupi, Manipal which is considerably longer because I'll be starting from Mangalore.

My trip plan is as follows:

Day - 1
Bangalore - Nelamangala - Hassan - Shakleshpur - Siradi - Bantwal - Mangalore

Stay at Summer Sands,

Local sight seeing in the afternoon/evening - Sultan Battery, Kadri Manjunath Temple and the Aloicius Church

Day - 2

Mangalore - Karkala - Agumbe - Kaup - Malpe - Kundapur - Maravanthe

Stay in Turtle Bay

Day - 3

Maravathe Cross - Murudeshwara - Gokarna ( OM Beach)

Stay at Ome beach Resort

Day - 4

Gokarna - Karwar - Gokarna

Stay at Om beach resort

Day - 5

Gokarna - Honnavar - Sagar - Jog Falls - Shimoga - Bangalore

Late entry to Bangalore to avoid traffic.

This same plan worked really well for me when I traveled last March.

Any suggestions on improving any part of it considering the roads are worse after monsoon? Any info on any specific portions is highly appreciated.

That's true, every time I encountered a bus, I had to move back until I found some space to squeeze out of the way.

On 6th night, a 45 year old biker fell into a huge pothole on NH17 near Padubidri and died, he was the son of a freedom fighter.

heheh Star i took the "1000th" post realised now...

btw am sure this thread will go on and on and on... as am sure the road condition will never be up to the mark and people would want to enquire about the conditions before they start...

Thats very sad and disgusting!

forgot to mention i had travelled till kodialbail, this road is getting chaotic and some potholes filled with water can be very dangerous for all cars. cant even imagine a bike go through it until and unless one is used to such rides!

Also make sure that you keep all the window glass rolled up as the buses zip through these potholes while you are slowly moving, resulting in the water gushing inside your car. i was a victim while on my way:(

Lohith,
Seriously, once again I see some calculation gone terribly wrong.
Distance between Kengeri - Kushalngar is approximately 200kms via mysore/srirangaptna. I don't think anyone can possibly cover this distance on road in AN HOUR.

Sush, i think i the "0" mins got the confusion. i dint come via srirangapatna but via mysore. the distance should be Kushanagara to Mysore is 90kms and Mysore ringroad junction to kengeri is about 130kms i did it in 2:30mins 1 hr is possible if the roads cleared of traffic

Beautiful roads from kushalnagr to kengeri. You can cruise over 100+, But lot of speed breakers here and there.

How on earth did you manage around 230 odd Kms in 1hr? I thought you took your FIAT

I took the srirangapatnam route. Took a deviation from soemwhere around Yelewal and it connected to Srirangapatnam. I asssume i saved around 15-20Kms there.

If you take the first left (within 30 seconds) after leaving Kushalnagar, there is a wormhole connecting directly to Kengeri. That is how it is possible.

If you don't understand wormholes, see the movie Stargate,

Shiradi Ghat to be closed for traffic from Nov 09 till May 2010

Shiradi Ghat may be shut down for 7 months - Mangalore - City - NEWS - The Times of India

This information was on Times of India website, published yesterday. Hope this will put an end to horrible roads in the ghat section once the concreting is complete.
