Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Hi guys,
Just made a trip to Tarkarli from Mumbai in my Safari. While going to tarkarli took Mumbai-Pune -Kolhapur route.Took six hours with half a dozen breaks for fuel, tea, lunch, tea and kid's nature call. A halt at Hotel Jotiba, which was okayish. After Darshan at the Mahalakshmi temple and evening stroll at Rankala ,had a nice dinner at Rajpurush. Next morning started for Tarkarli via Gagan bavda ,Fonda . took 4-5 hours as we took many breaks for snacks ,tea and snaps. While coming back, we took Radhanagri-Kolhapur-Pune - Mumbai route. Done in 12 hrs 30 minutes (530km) with few breaks for lunch tea and fuel also traffic jams .Safari made the journey easy and manageable. Radhanagri route is recommended as its easier and less bad patches, although more villages along the route.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Hi Guys,

Looking to spend 3 days (28,29,30,31Dec) in Tarkarli with family and Kids ( Goa will be expensive and crowded at that time).

Few queries about the trip
1> What is the best route from Pune to Tarkarli and approximate journey time
2> Itinerary for 3 days with checkout on 31st
3> Recommended hotels (within the budget of 3000 PN)

Thanks

The route I've shared a few posts below is perhaps the best even now.

The most significant attraction is of course, Sindhudurg Fort. Apart from that, you can visit the nearby towns (Ratnagiri for eg.). This not being mango seaon, not much to do there otherwise.

Good place for some down-time though.

Tip: You'll find a bunch of places advertising snorkelling and scuba-diving for as cheap as 300. I wouldn't do either.

We stayed at Fantasea which is at towards the end of the Tarkarli beach (about 100m from the MTDC resort). From what I recall, it was 3k/night in April (a massively off-season).

The best place to stay is the MTDC resort, heard a lot about it - but it is way beyond 3k.

Tarkarli is a pretty popular place and if you're planning now for the new year's eve weekend, I doubt you'd find vacancy in the good sea-facing hotels. I'd strongly recommend booking a proper hotel first and then your travel so you're not stuck compromising on your hotel.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Thanks for the information.

I decided on Tarkarli thinking it would be less crowded as everybody will be going to GOA during this time.

Need to think about other destinations near by pune.

BTW how are the beaches in comparison to GOA (Calangute etc)

No comparison; Calangute and Baga are the lousiest beach in Goa!

Tarkarli, and other Konkan beaches, are much cleaner, less crowded and hardly commercialized.

Although I wouldn't expect any of them to have above average + sea-facing/across the road accommodation available at such short notice, considering the time: new year's eve.

I visited calangute in dec 2012 and that time it wasn't very crowded and liked the beach as well.

Okay lets see if I find out any good hotels available in tarkarli for these dates.

Thanks again for your prompt response.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Quick update:

I started from Thane around 5:15AM. Reached hotel Sai International just before Kolhapur by 11:45AM.

We took about an hour long break for fuel and food and from there started towards Tarkarli.

We took Radhanagari route. Though the route is very scenic, it slows down you a lot. Took us about 4 hours to cross the Radhanagari route via Phonda ghat and total of about 6 hours from Kolhapur. The route condition is average and not very bad.

I will update on my route during return journey.

For the return journey, we started at around 8:15AM from Devbag. Unlike onward journey, this time I took the Gaganbawda route and reached Hotel Sai International by 2PM for Lunch break. Gagnbawda route is patchy esp in ghat but overall stretch is in satisfactory condition.

Post lunch started at around 3PM from Kolhapur and with 2 breaks, reached Thane at around 10:30PM.

On the way to Kashid (from Alibag), you can check out Korlai Fort. There's a very small (10min), easy hike that gives you a nice view of the coastline from the fort. And there's a lighthouse too.

Everything is open; most of Mumbai/Pune has been littered across Konkan and Goa since Diwali.
