Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Did a Pune - Tarkarli run this past weekend.
Pune - Kolhapur - Gaganbawda - Vaibhavwadi - Kankavli - Kasal - Kusarave - Chauke - Tarkarli.

Pune - Satara: misery
Satara - Kolhapur: fairly decent if done early morning
We then got off NH4 and got into Kolhapur city towards Gaganbawda

Gaganbawda is 50% bad, and 50% very good

Gaganbawda - Kankavli is good
Kankavli - Kasal: brilliant concrete stretch, barely any traffic

Kasal - Tarkarli: good roads, be sure to take NH/SH 182 through the towns mentioned on top.

Kankavli - Kasal: old Mumbai - Goa highway

That said, it was heartbreaking to see the filth on the Tarkarli beach. It has gotten terribly commercialized with absolutely no regards for safety, hygiene or cleanliness. The amount of garbage on the beaches vs. our visit three years back is alarmingly staggering.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Hello all,

Planning a trip from Pune to Malvan next week. Have option of taking Rapid or mu-X for the trip.

Route will be most probably through Gaganbawda.

Any inputs on the condition of the route / any better alternatives?

Thank you....

We took the route Pune-Kolhapur-Gaganbawda-Kankavli-Malvan. Except for the Gaganbawda ghat, the route is good. Gaganbawda ghat is in very bad condition. Fortunately took Isuzu my-X for the trip, hence did not find any difficulty in the ghat. For low GC cars, it will be very bad road.

While coming back we came through Radhanagari. The route is longer and time consuming due to some pipeline work going on.

Will recommend Gaganbawda route.

Thanks just got back today.
The condition of the road at Gaganbawda has become even worse. There is absolutely no road and just craters
Apart from this stretch the road was in decent condition

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Everyone who wants to travel towards Malvan/tarkarli, Vengurle, Devgad from Kolhapur, just follow Google maps advice for the road - Kolhapur -> Ispurli, -> Turambe -> Gudal -> Kasaba Tarle -> Rautwadi waterfall -> Dajipur -> Phonda ghat -> Onwards.

AVOID Gaganbawda, the road is not worth taking. Amba Ghat is in good condition except a one-way patch. Anuskura is best avoided.

This route avoids the bad stretchs between Kolhapur and Khindi Vharawade due to the pipeline work. It also avoids bad stretches around Radhanagari and instead takes the route from the backside of the dam. The road is small, but scenic and better.

The MTDC resort at Tarkarli has long been a favourite for many, given its location and nature of the property. So much so that it is generally booked out several months in advance.

Just wanted to mention feedback from a friend who visited a few weeks back. He had a terrible experience -

a) cleanliness was a major issue throughout: rooms weren't clean (dust + mould), linen wasn't fresh/clean, and the property had litter (and alcohol bottles) at several places
b) Service was a challenge: staff isn't back full strength so service times are very slow

It was bad enough that he checked out immediately, despite losing a significant amount of money (he had two rooms booked for four nights, without refund).

Do check for fresh reviews before booking.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Went to a beach south of Bhogwe recently and tried two different routes.

Onward: Pune - Karad - Pachvad - Malkapur - Anuskura - Kharepatan - Kudal
Return: Kudal - Lanja - Amba - Malkapur - Pachvad - Karad - Pune

The roads were excellent throughout the entire journey except the two ghats: Anuskura and Amba. While Anuskura is somewhat bad for 50km, Amba is just destroyed with several feet wide and deep craters.

The Lanja - Rajapur - Kharepatan - Kudal journey was on the new concrete NH66.

Had stayed at Avisa Nila. Our experience was very good.

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Hi Folks, a friend of mine will be travelling to Vengurla (Daboli Naka) from Mumbai on 20th April, i.e. tomorrow and has asked me to suggest the best route to reach there. He will be travelling with his family and a pet in an old Force Traveller. Google shows me three options
1. The Old Mumbai Goa Road - which I would likely avoid due to the road conditions.
2. Mumbai - Pune - Karad - Malkapur - Anuskura Ghat - Nikharevadi - Kharepatan - Kudal - Vengurla. This would be the preferred route.
3. Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Nipani - Uttur - Ajra - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Vengurla. This route is a bit longer, so I wouldn't choose this one as well.

Since, I've been following threads for a while, I have read about the Karad - Malkapur - Anuskura Road to be preferred by some and much better than other routes. I would like to know whether shortcut showed by Google after Anuskura which connects to Kharepatan should be taken or avoided as some say that the road is in bad condition. Or else, is it better to go to Oni and connect NH66 faster and cruise on the better road. Though, hitting the expressway and moving towards Kharepatan will consume more time as it is around 20 kms longer than the shortcut which connects Kharepatan. If anyone has travelled through this route recently, please share your inputs. Also, please feel free to recommend any other routes which would be better than this one. Thanks!!!

Re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Just a couple of thoughts on Justus12's post: Most people narrate their experiences of a car trip. Traveller is more of a mini-bus so the experience will be different.

Also, if the vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle, cops can be a headache along the route.

Safe travels.
