Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today

Exterior Impressions

Hyundai Verna

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231014-084254.png

The Verna boasts a futuristic design, which might not be everyone's cup of tea initially. However, over time, it could grow on you. The rear looks appealing, but the front design might still leave some room for debate.

Honda City

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231014-083116.png

The City has a sleek, elongated profile that showcases elegance and simplicity. Its clean and premium appearance doesn't get boring over time. The rear design is both clean and sporty, adding to its overall appeal.

Škoda Slavia

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231014-083605.png

The Škoda Slavia's design flawlessly captures a mini-Octavia look, creating a stunning appearance. The proportions are balanced, and the design elements blend seamlessly without being overly attention-seeking. Despite its understated elegance, it turns heads on the road, making a strong impression.

VW Virtus

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231014-084001.png

Škoda cars have a graceful and stylish appearance, emphasizing elegance. On the other hand, Volkswagen cars showcase a sporty and edgy look. The Virtus carries this sporty vibe with a front end similar to the Jetta and a rear resembling the Audi A4. Its design is sleek and lively, appealing to people who enjoy a dynamic and modern style.

Maruti Ciaz

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231014-084549.png

The Ciaz has a simple design. Despite its age, it has aged well and still looks good, even though it might seem a bit plain compared to its rivals. However, the Ciaz is straightforward and practical. Considering its affordable price, it is a very attractive and good-looking sedan option.

In conclusion, the Verna showcases a polarizing design, whereas the City and Ciaz feature straightforward and practical aesthetics. The Virtus and Slavia, on the other hand, combine elegance with sporty elements. However, it's essential to note that opinions on looks are subjective and differ from person to person.

Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today

Instrument Cluster, Infotainment System and Speakers

Hyundai Verna

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231015-225209.png

  • 10.25" driver's display shows speed and tachometer numerically, with theme changing based on driving mode. MID displays ADAS features information.
  • Clear 10.25" touchscreen visible in direct sunlight, offers an organized menu for easy ADAS access. Supports wired Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, onboard navigation, and dual-view reversing camera.
  • Despite Bose branding, the audio system (8 speakers) disappoints with a lack of punch, flat vocals, and inferior quality compared to the VW-Skoda system.

Honda City

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231015-225640.png

  • Neat 7" instrument cluster with digital and analogue displays: Analog speedometer on the right, digital screen on the left with multiple display modes.
  • 8" touchscreen in the City: Slow responsiveness, dated UI, limited functionality.
  • Audio system with 8 speakers: Lacks prominent branding (e.g., Sony, JBL, Bose), average audio quality, not particularly impressive.

Škoda Slavia

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231015-230029.png

  • 8" digital cockpit displays digital temperature, fuel gauges, time, outside temperature, and distance-to-empty. Detailed design enhances aesthetics.
  • 10" tablet-like floating touchscreen with a smooth and user-friendly interface. Supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for seamless smartphone integration.
  • 8-speaker setup (4x50W bass speakers + 4x20W tweeters) with a 1x100W subwoofer, total output of 380W. Subwoofer in the boot, amplifier under the front passenger seat. Good sound quality, slightly bass-heavy, adjustable settings for a personalized experience.

VW Virtus

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231015-225512.png

Maruti Ciaz

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231016-171407.png

  • Features rev counter, 4.2" coloured TFT MID, and analogue temperature/fuel gauges in the instrument cluster.
  • 7" touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and voice recognition. UI looks dated.
  • Equipped with 6 speakers (including 2 tweeters) for audio playback. Average sound quality.

In summary, the Verna features a good touchscreen but its instrument cluster is only decent. The Honda City has a subpar touchscreen but compensates with one of the best instrument clusters in its segment. The Slavia and Virtus excel in both touchscreen and instrument cluster quality. Although not the best, their instrument clusters outperform competitors in terms of data presentation and graphics. In contrast, the Ciaz's touchscreen feels outdated, but its instrument cluster fares well if we overlook the less attractive stalks used for data access. In terms of audio quality, Verna's Bose sound system disappoints, especially when compared to the superior sound systems in Slavia and Virtus. They offer a significantly better listening experience. The speaker setup in Slavia and Virtus is undoubtedly the best in the segment.

Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today

Features

The table below shows essential features that midsize sedan buyers usually want:

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231016-193906.png

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231016-194000.png

In conclusion, the Verna stands out as the most feature-rich sedan in the segment, closely followed by the Virtus and Slavia, which have been receiving notable updates. The City, while decently loaded, lacks essential features like ventilated seats. The Ciaz feels remarkably outdated in its feature offerings, but its lower price tag must be considered. Notably, the Verna and the City are the sole contenders in the segment offering Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

  • Smooth and refined engine with linear power delivery.
  • Effortless city driving with a light clutch and responsive gearbox.
  • High-revving nature allows for exploring the engine's rpm range.
  • Effortless city driving with smooth transitions and impressive fuel efficiency (Hybrid powertrain).
  • 6-speed manual transmission offers precise gear changes.
  • 1.5L CVT for urban commuting, smooth operation, and ideal for city driving.
  • Impressive straight-line stability and comfortable ride.
  • User-friendly electric power steering.
  • Some bounciness is noticeable at higher speeds.

Škoda Slavia

Powertrain Options: Offers a 1.5L 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 7-speed DSG and a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed Torque Converter transmission (AT).

  • Responsive 6-speed manual transmission for enthusiasts.
  • Light clutch but with a somewhat long travel range.

  • Noticeable turbo lag (1.0L TSI) but strong mid-range power.
  • Smooth 7-speed DSG for quick gear shifts.
  • Firm and composed suspension setup.
  • Direct and sharp electric power steering.
  • Suitable for city and highway driving.

VW Virtus

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231021-114022.png

Powertrain Options: Similar to the Škoda Slavia, it offers a 1.5L 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 7-speed DSG and a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed Torque Converter transmission (AT).
  • Strong low-end torque (1.5 TSI) for city driving.
  • Swift acceleration with enjoyable performance on highways.
  • Smooth 6-speed manual transmission.

  • Smooth 7-speed DSG for seamless gear shifts.
  • Excellent straight-line stability and composed suspension.

  • Ideal for city and highway driving.

Maruti Ciaz

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231021-114152.png

Powertrain Options: Offers a 1.5L engine with a 5-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 4-speed automatic transmission (AT).
  • Powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine, generating adequate power for city driving and relaxed highway cruising.
  • Linear power delivery, making it suitable for a calm driving style; not designed for enthusiastic driving.
  • Manual transmission offers precise gear changes.
  • Revs up to 6,300 rpm; engine feels strained under heavy acceleration.
  • NVH levels are decent, with minimal engine noise at idle and low revs, but become noticeable above 2,000 rpm.
  • Equipped with a 4-speed automatic torque converter, offers ease of driving but lacks performance.
  • Smooth start and creeping forward without throttle input; slightly jerky response at times, especially in slow-moving traffic.
  • Includes cruise control and Maruti's Smart Hybrid system, improving fuel efficiency to an ARAI-certified 20.28 km/l.
  • The Ciaz's steering lacks feedback and directness.
  • At higher speeds, the car demonstrates good stability.

In terms of engine power, the Verna leads the pack, but its handling capabilities are lacking. The City's 1.5 NA engine offers a solid alternative to the 1.0-litre engines found in European cars, especially in manual transmission. However, in automatic transmission, the 1.0-litre engines of the competition outshine it. The Slavia and Virtus, equipped with the 1.5 engine, exhibit excellent handling, making them the most enjoyable to drive in the segment. On the other hand, the Ciaz offers average performance with nothing extraordinary to boast about. If fuel efficiency is your primary concern, the Honda City hybrid is the best choice for you.

Pros and Cons

Hyundai Verna

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231013-223736.png

What you'll like:
  • Versatile sedan that excels in various aspects.
  • Competitive pricing compared to its rivals.
  • User-friendly interiors with ample cabin space.
  • Powerful 158 BHP, 1.5L turbo-petrol engine with a quick DCT option.
  • Comfortable ride on 205/55 R16 tires.
  • Loaded with features: LED auto headlamps, ventilated seats, electric driver’s seat, sunroof, wireless charging, and more.
  • Robust safety tech: level 2 ADAS, 6 airbags, ESC, 3-point seatbelts, rear disc brakes, front & rear parking sensors.
  • Extensive Hyundai service network and up to 7-year extended warranty.

What you won't:
  • Divisive futuristic design; some find it too edgy.
  • Quality of plastics could be better for a car in the 20+ lakh price range.
  • No diesel engine option available.
  • Turbo-petrols are sensitive to driving style, leading to decreased fuel efficiency with aggressive driving.
  • Dual-clutch ATs historically unreliable in India; Verna with 1.5L NA IVT available.
  • Limited rear space for three adults; better suited for two plus a child.
  • Not as engaging to drive as VW Virtus & Skoda Slavia.
  • Missing features: 360-degree camera, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, auto wipers, foldable rear seat.

Honda City

  • Spacious cabin, practical boot, and impressive safety features: 6 airbags, ESP, Hill Start Assist.
  • Noteworthy extras: sunroof, Honda connect with Alexa, cruise control.

What you won't:
  • Rear can get bouncy at high speeds on uneven roads.
  • Chassis & suspension don't match the potent engine beyond 120 km/h.
  • Jerky rev-limiter in the petrol variant.
  • Thin 185-section tires struggle; upgrading to 195/205 mm is recommended.
  • Outdated audio head-unit interface with average sound quality.
  • Low seating is not senior citizen-friendly; poor sound insulation at high speeds.

What you won't:
  • DQ200 DSG transmission has a history of reliability issues in India.
  • Limited backseat space for three adults; more comfortable for two plus a child.
  • Interior quality doesn’t match traditional VW standards; polarising body-coloured interior highlights.

Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today

Final Impressions

Hyundai Verna

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231013-191516.png

The Verna stands out as an excellent all-rounder, offering features, spaciousness, top-notch safety, and impressive engine performance. While its exterior design might not appeal to everyone, its overall package makes it the best car in the segment.

Honda City

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231013-192132.png

The Honda City excels in spaciousness, refined engines, remarkable fuel efficiency, and performance. While it lacks a turbo engine and some features, it appeals to those seeking a reliable companion that runs seamlessly for years.

Škoda Slavia and VW Virtus

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231021-122403.png

The Slavia and Virtus stand out as true all-rounders, offering top-notch safety, abundant features, premium interiors, impressive looks and performance. While they could improve the materials inside the cabin and the sense of space, they undeniably shine as brilliant cars.

Maruti Ciaz

Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today-screenshot-20231013-191415.png

The Ciaz represents great value for money. Its top model's price matches the starting price of competitors' base models. It serves as an excellent alternative for those seeking a compact sedan, providing superior space, aesthetics, features, and engine. While it may lack in certain aspects and not boast standout features, it remains a no-nonsense sedan, ideal for strict budgets and buyers who prioritize the trust associated with Maruti.

In the end, pick the sedan that suits your preferences the best, be it driving experience, space, features, safety, or efficiency.

Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today

Thanks Motordev for the comprehensive comparison. This should be the go to thread for anyone considering a sedan purchase.
Case for a sedan in general - Driving pleasure of a sedan is unparalleled, our roads are improving and the prices are close to top end of sub 4m crossovers.
Having extensively test driven City, Slavia, Virtus and Ciaz, I purchased the new Verna 1.5 DCT. After ~10k kms, can say I am really happy with the overall package and would happily recommend to everyone.
Also have a BRV (with the same IVTEC - CVT combo as the City) that has done 70K kms. They are smooth and refined, reliable and fuel efficient . However after driving a turbo petrol with DCT /DSG or TC, you won't feel like going back to NA petrols or CVT.
Though if some one drives predominantly in the city, I would recommend either the City CVT or the Verna IVT. Never thought I would say this but I would prefer the Verna IVT, it's smoother and makes a beautiful sound when revved.
