| Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today The midsize sedan market has gained fresh attention, particularly due to the impressive 5-star rating achieved by the newly launched Hyundai Verna. In the analysis below, I evaluate a range of popular cars in this category, including the Honda City, Škoda Slavia, Hyundai Verna, VW Virtus, and the Maruti Ciaz. These midsize sedans undergo a comprehensive evaluation covering different aspects. | Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today The Verna boasts a futuristic design, which might not be everyone's cup of tea initially. However, over time, it could grow on you. The rear looks appealing, but the front design might still leave some room for debate. The City has a sleek, elongated profile that showcases elegance and simplicity. Its clean and premium appearance doesn't get boring over time. The rear design is both clean and sporty, adding to its overall appeal. The Škoda Slavia's design flawlessly captures a mini-Octavia look, creating a stunning appearance. The proportions are balanced, and the design elements blend seamlessly without being overly attention-seeking. Despite its understated elegance, it turns heads on the road, making a strong impression. Škoda cars have a graceful and stylish appearance, emphasizing elegance. On the other hand, Volkswagen cars showcase a sporty and edgy look. The Virtus carries this sporty vibe with a front end similar to the Jetta and a rear resembling the Audi A4. Its design is sleek and lively, appealing to people who enjoy a dynamic and modern style. The Ciaz has a simple design. Despite its age, it has aged well and still looks good, even though it might seem a bit plain compared to its rivals. However, the Ciaz is straightforward and practical. Considering its affordable price, it is a very attractive and good-looking sedan option. In conclusion, the Verna showcases a polarizing design, whereas the City and Ciaz feature straightforward and practical aesthetics. The Virtus and Slavia, on the other hand, combine elegance with sporty elements. However, it's essential to note that opinions on looks are subjective and differ from person to person. In summary, the Verna boasts a futuristic interior featuring a dual-screen setup, while the City offers a clean and practical layout coupled with ample comfort. The Slavia and Virtus provide a pleasant interior ambience, although they lack the spacious feel of their competitors. On the other hand, the Ciaz offers abundant space inside but falls short in terms of the interior's overall aesthetics and material quality, giving it a slightly outdated feel. | Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today
In summary, the Verna features a good touchscreen but its instrument cluster is only decent. The Honda City has a subpar touchscreen but compensates with one of the best instrument clusters in its segment. The Slavia and Virtus excel in both touchscreen and instrument cluster quality. Although not the best, their instrument clusters outperform competitors in terms of data presentation and graphics. In contrast, the Ciaz's touchscreen feels outdated, but its instrument cluster fares well if we overlook the less attractive stalks used for data access. In terms of audio quality, Verna's Bose sound system disappoints, especially when compared to the superior sound systems in Slavia and Virtus. They offer a significantly better listening experience. The speaker setup in Slavia and Virtus is undoubtedly the best in the segment. Index Last edited by MotorDev : 21st October 2023 at 14:24. |

| Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today In conclusion, the Verna stands out as the most feature-rich sedan in the segment, closely followed by the Virtus and Slavia, which have been receiving notable updates. The City, while decently loaded, lacks essential features like ventilated seats. The Ciaz feels remarkably outdated in its feature offerings, but its lower price tag must be considered. Notably, the Verna and the City are the sole contenders in the segment offering Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Index Last edited by MotorDev : 21st October 2023 at 14:34. |

| Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today SafetyHyundai VernaThe Hyundai Verna received an impressive 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupancies with an unstable body shell. It offers safety features such as 6 airbags, forward collision warning, high-beam assist, seat belt warning, child lock, anchor points for child seats, overspeed warning, speed sensing door lock, anti-theft engine immobilizer, middle rear three-point seatbelt, flashing emergency brake light, lane departure warning, central locking, and more. Honda CityThe 5th generation Honda City underwent crash testing by ASEAN NCAP (5-star) and boasts a variety of safety features. These include 6 airbags, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, high-beam assist, seat belt warning, child lock, anchor points for child seats, overspeed warning, speed sensing door lock, anti-theft engine immobilizer, middle rear three-point seatbelt, lane departure warning, central locking and more. While it hasn't been rated by GNCAP, considering the 4th generation received a solid 4-star rating, the expectation is for a minimum 4-star safety rating for the 5th gen Honda City. Škoda Slavia and VW VirtusThe Škoda Slavia and VW Virtus both received an impressive 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupancies, along with stable body shells according to GNCAP. | Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today PerformanceHyundai VernaPowertrain Options: Offers a powerful 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) or a 6-speed manual transmission (MT). Additionally, a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine is available with a manual transmission (MT) or an intelligent variable transmission (IVT).
Honda City![]() Powertrain Options: Offers a 1.5L I-Vtec engine with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Additionally, there is a hybrid variant equipped with a 1498 cc petrol engine generating 96.55bhp@5600-6400rpm and 127Nm@4500-5000rpm torque, available only in Automatic transmission (AT).
Powertrain Options: Offers a 1.5L 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 7-speed DSG and a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed Torque Converter transmission (AT).
Powertrain Options: Similar to the Škoda Slavia, it offers a 1.5L 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 7-speed DSG and a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed Torque Converter transmission (AT).
Powertrain Options: Offers a 1.5L engine with a 5-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 4-speed automatic transmission (AT).
In terms of engine power, the Verna leads the pack, but its handling capabilities are lacking. The City's 1.5 NA engine offers a solid alternative to the 1.0-litre engines found in European cars, especially in manual transmission. However, in automatic transmission, the 1.0-litre engines of the competition outshine it. The Slavia and Virtus, equipped with the 1.5 engine, exhibit excellent handling, making them the most enjoyable to drive in the segment. On the other hand, the Ciaz offers average performance with nothing extraordinary to boast about. If fuel efficiency is your primary concern, the Honda City hybrid is the best choice for you. | Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today The Verna stands out as an excellent all-rounder, offering features, spaciousness, top-notch safety, and impressive engine performance. While its exterior design might not appeal to everyone, its overall package makes it the best car in the segment. The Honda City excels in spaciousness, refined engines, remarkable fuel efficiency, and performance. While it lacks a turbo engine and some features, it appeals to those seeking a reliable companion that runs seamlessly for years. The Slavia and Virtus stand out as true all-rounders, offering top-notch safety, abundant features, premium interiors, impressive looks and performance. While they could improve the materials inside the cabin and the sense of space, they undeniably shine as brilliant cars. The Ciaz represents great value for money. Its top model's price matches the starting price of competitors' base models. It serves as an excellent alternative for those seeking a compact sedan, providing superior space, aesthetics, features, and engine. While it may lack in certain aspects and not boast standout features, it remains a no-nonsense sedan, ideal for strict budgets and buyers who prioritize the trust associated with Maruti. In the end, pick the sedan that suits your preferences the best, be it driving experience, space, features, safety, or efficiency. Thank you for reading this sedan comparison. I hope this comprehensive overview of the midsize sedans in the market helped you understand the key differences between them. Cheers. Disclaimer: Please note that all views presented in this comparison have been collectively compiled from Team-BHP reviews. I haven't personally experienced all the sedans, except for the Slavia and City. Index Last edited by MotorDev : 21st October 2023 at 14:39. |

| Re: Midsize Sedan comparison | Exploring the best choices today Thanks Motordev for the comprehensive comparison. This should be the go to thread for anyone considering a sedan purchase. Case for a sedan in general - Driving pleasure of a sedan is unparalleled, our roads are improving and the prices are close to top end of sub 4m crossovers. Having extensively test driven City, Slavia, Virtus and Ciaz, I purchased the new Verna 1.5 DCT. After ~10k kms, can say I am really happy with the overall package and would happily recommend to everyone. Also have a BRV (with the same IVTEC - CVT combo as the City) that has done 70K kms. They are smooth and refined, reliable and fuel efficient . However after driving a turbo petrol with DCT /DSG or TC, you won't feel like going back to NA petrols or CVT. Though if some one drives predominantly in the city, I would recommend either the City CVT or the Verna IVT. Never thought I would say this but I would prefer the Verna IVT, it's smoother and makes a beautiful sound when revved. Last edited by FAIAAA : 22nd October 2023 at 09:38.
