Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

I have the exact same one as @IronH4wk's. Bought it from US about 3 years ago. Still holding strong!

BTW, anybody here who can perform one of those Zippo tricks that are in abundance on Youtube and elsewhere?

There is no big deal "in" a Zippo. Zippo is the Big Deal!!

A lot of American folklore associated with the Zippo. Made famous during the war for it's versatility in the front lines. Easy to refuel, works damp, and wind proof. The trademark click was used to recognize friend or foe, etc, etc.

The fact that most parts are replaceable allows them to give a lifetime warranty. If your old Zippo is beat up, send it back and they will fix it for you for free.

They have brand affiliations with several popular brands, so there are many collections to follow.
The have a range in special metals. One of them that I have is the "Solid Titanium" one. An example of silliness. No weight saving at all!!
I could go on and on. Is it just a coincidence that 5th June was it's 80th anniversary? No, it's just the awesome power of the Zippo!!!!

Cheers

Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

Forget saving for those alloys, its time for a Zippo!! I am just scared of losing/damaging it considering how many plastic ones get lost/spun around in the washing machine

@ Partha: dont bother with herbal, e-cigs and the like. Its all a waste as per my experience.

The cast of MadMen and other tv shows are turning to herbal cigarettes.
And nope not calling ze H4wk old. I look older than him with receding hairline and what not. His hair is still unscathed. Funny thing so many names have come with "Ironxxxx" that only name probably left to be taken up is "IronRod".

And if your zippo is getting tossed in the washing machine i think youd better run out of the house. Kabooom!! Im talking about the newer butane ones.

Mods please requesting again to change the name of thread to
"Zippos you own and Tricks you know"
Cheers

Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

Never heard of a ZIPPO before. HIPPO, yes - The fat animal with big jaws. Zippo? No.

But just today, I saw a full page ad for Zippo India home in the latest issue of Top Gear magazine. I guess the manufacturer is officially launching the product in India.

Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

The Zippo Lighters looks great and handy. I've never owned one. Cheetah Fighter matches is what I used when I was smoking.

I'm a non smoker since the last 7 years. I see this thread as a potential campaign for those who still smoke to quit smoking. My smoking friends, think about quitting it.

I do appreciate your words, Sir. A Zippo is always a big deal and the affection grows day by day, as both of you grow older.

I bet you are a regular user of your Zippo(s). I guess there were times when the trademark click even sounded like a music to you.

Unfortunately repairing a Zippo is difficult in India. IIRC, three years ago, the service station was not located in any big city. It was located in Ernakulam, in Kerala instead. I called up those people several times and every time I was given the number of the owner/proprietor. No doubt, he was a fine gentleman. He listened to my requests and each time he very politely told me that he was out of station but either he or his office staffs would very shortly call me back. The call never came. I was frustrated and I gave it to one colleague of mine who went to Bangladesh with his official works. He got it repaired duting his two month long stay in Dhaka.

There's another thread for that.
This is just an appreciation thread of, basically, a fine piece of simple engineering.

Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

And here is mine. The matt silver is the first one I owned back in 2001 and it hasn't stopped yet.

Notice the Fire, Water....one. That's the most expensive; got it for about 3500 couple of years ago. My wife exclaimed that it was the cost of a one way ticket to Delhi at that time!

Re: Zippo Lighters - You Own

I bought 3 Zippos (Jack Daniels) when I was in Thailand for honeymoon. Gifted 2 to my closest buddies (from college) and kept one for myself. I knew what they would cost back in India and I must admit that I bought it very cheap (250 Baht each which is about INR 425). All of them have worked like a charm from day one but I have my own doubts about their genuineness.

All the three look like the pic below except that they're blue in color.

I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it here.
