Re: The Books Thread (non-fiction)

Title: The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race
Author: Walter Isaacson
Rating: 4.5/5

There are writers and there are writers! Imagine a scenario where even a paper publishing deadline is nerve racking and reads like a thriller! Enough has been said about Isaacson’s prowess but I have to admit, there is none with such calibre in India. And we really need such writers in India to bring forth our stories which deserve so much attention.

Isaacson is exceptional in this book. While many might be oblivious to gene editing, this book is a mirror in the medical future and how things will change for better. A must read, if not for the plot line then for the artistry of the author. Doudna’s journey is incredible but the cherry on top is how elite professionals collaborate and bring the best out of each other. The book also raises many ethical questions about the future of medicine and they are really interesting to ponder upon.

Overall a highly recommended read.

I have always been fascinated by our country's armed forces- the work they do, the sacrifices they make and just the raw courage it takes to do what they do. So, this book was a natural buy for me when I came across it.
You will enjoy this book if you're anything like me...and even if you're not. The book has 14 short stories of different officers and soldiers in the forces, and their acts of courage, leadership, and fearlessness in incredibly hostile and grave situations.
Really a brilliant book, and very hard to put down.

Title: The Anxious Generation
Author: Jonathan Haidt
Rating: 4.5*

I can say this is the best book that I read in the last year (2024). This book tells about harmful effects of social media/smart Phone on kids. All parents having kids below 16 should read this.

Our Moon Has Blood Clots - Rahul Pandita

"Is a 2013 memoir by Indian author Rahul Pandita about the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in the late 1989 and early 1990"

Someone had recommended this book a while back and i finally got around to reading it.

The book was not easy reading and in hindsight reading it in the train was a bad idea.

A real sad insightful telling of their plight.

I recommended this book: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/shift...ml#post5368817 (The Books Thread (non-fiction))

And as much as this was a painful read (due to the horrific events), I'd still say this is a MUST READ for everyone, "lest you forget to learn from the past".

Re: The Books Thread (non-fiction)

Title: The Nvidia Way: Jensen Huang and the Making of a Tech Giant by Tae Kim
Rating: 4.5/5

An exceptional read: not for the writing or the prose or the style but just for the content. With so much hype around Nvidia and Jensen Huang, delving in to his life and working style was exciting. And the book pretty much reveals the secret sauce; why Nvidia is where it is today and how did it reach there.

Highly recommended.

Book 2/52.
#CashTags - Vishal and Meghana Malkan.
My Rating: 3/5

In my quest to look for an alternate career or call it an additional way of making some money, more excitingly than I currently do it, I started looking at Trading with a new perspective. Hence, this became the third book that I have read on the subject. This turns out to be a lukewarm affair as the entire book turns out to be a marketing gimmick by the couple Authors to sell their Stock Training Program which they run throughout the country. There is no way to read just the book and not attend their training course, which comes at a price and is about a year long. So you get the drift. this is one way of making money for them, whether you make it or not, they will for sure by teaching you how to do it right. But not everything is negative about this book, as it taught me how to read View, Observe and analyse the Trade Charts and predict which one will go down or up in the coming days. Plus it does affirm the reader’s psyche when investing money in the Stock Market. I liked the way they talk about how we are programmed by our surroundings, culture, parents, siblings, friends and colleagues whenever it comes to taking up a new thing as a change and how hard it is to break it and do what you want to do, come what may be the risk. So I am going to try a few of their ways in the coming days but I am damn sure that Warren Buffet’s biography was a better read and teacher, I am not comparing it with that though, just saying.

Let me know if you have read a better book on Stock Trading or Investments as I am looking for more reading to kick-start my trading career. I would love to read some that talk about real-time stock investments.

Re: The Books Thread (non-fiction)

Interesting thread. During the lockdown, 2020, between waves 1 and 2, I chanced upon a book by Dilip Hiro called ''Cold War in the Islamic World: Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Struggle for Supremacy". It piqued my interest as MBS had conducted a royal shakedown of the Saudi royalty a few years prior by imprisoning them at the Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh. So, I proceeded to pick it up. I put it down several days later, after completing it (perks of work from home).

The book is for someone who is OK with narrative history and has some context about Iran and Saudi rivalry, at least the religion-based ideological divide. It's not for someone who is looking for nice descriptions (it is very dry and replete with facts, and also poorly edited). Still, it's one of my most memorable reads to date.

There was some thawing of relations at one point, but with the last US and Russian administrations, Saudi and Iran were firmly placed in the spheres of opposing parties of the last global cold war - and the stalemate continues.

Re: The Books Thread (non-fiction)

Halfway through "The Ascent of Money - Niall Fergusson". Written post the GFC it's a wonderful sweeping read about the histories of financial markets. Fergusson covers the bond market, stock market, real estate, gold etc (of course focused on Europe and US). I bought it over a decade ago, just never got around to reading it.
