Upgraded the Benq 24" monitor with an Iiyama 34" widescreen curved monitor and instead of box as foot for laptop, got a portable stand for holding laptop. With the wide screen it is more convenient to have 2 windows open side by side and the curvature helps to keep the viewing angles parallel to eyesight even at the far corners of the screen.

With wider screen, I find that I am not using the laptop screen much except, if I want to open and check something quickly while the main screen is busy.

As a follow up to the above 2 posts, here is another update to my home office tool. I have been using a Logitech M705 mouse for about 5 years now. But in the last couple of weeks, I was feeling some pain in my wrist and it happens especially when operating the mouse and that too with index finger (left click + scroll actions). Some online reading and hand posture correction tips later, stumbled across the world of ergonomic mouses. There seems to be a lot of types varying from joystick style, trackball only, trackball+buttons, adjustable mouses and vertical mouses. After some careful understanding, I thought of checking out vertical mouses as they seem to be attacking the root cause without compromising too much on the usage behaviour (like normal mouse actions)

Logitech's MX vertical (and more recent MX Lift) are from the mainstream manufacturer, but they come in only one size, which is not the way to go. So, looking past the mainstream brands and a bit of further reading, stumbled upon 2 brands (Evoluent from USA & R-go tools from Netherlands ), whose only goal is to make ergonomic products and one of them (Evoluent) especially is making mouses from the day when they started in 2002.So to give them a fair trial, ordered both of them 2 weeks ago and started using R-Go HE mouse for the first week and evoluent for the 2nd week. What I found interesting is that the pain is completely gone after I started using these vertical mouse. Also these mouse come in left and right hand variants with different sizes. I got right hand wireless large version of both of them.

After 2 weeks, I found the Evoluent mouse with it's agressive angle along with longer but slightly contoured buttons much better than the R-go model, especially for the finer movements. Also for my long fingers, Evoluent fits better. Evoluent has a dedicated middle button for opening new tabs. Since I got both of them as free trial, I will be sending the R-go HE mouse back to the shop and will hold the Evoluent. I wish someone told me about these mouses a long time back. Would have saved me some pain and frustration. Anyway, now you all know.

Some pics and product video:

Working from home? Show us your home office-img20220910wa0006.jpg

The vertical mouses look pretty weird for the first time we see that. But Evoluent made it look glossy and it sits on the table like an ornament/decorative piece. Also the glossy finish helps you grip the mouse better than the R-go's matt finish. It takes some time getting used to these type of mouses, as we have to move the whole arm and accuracy suffers for some weeks. But it should get better over time. Also both mouses has a dedicated DPI selection button which varies the DPI/how fast & far the pointer moves wrt actual movement. Evoluent has nice LED indication for DPI setting, near the thumb.

Was it taken with a wide angle lens? The perspective seems a bit off to me. The wavy keyboard doesn’t help either!

Yup, wide angle lens, iPhone.

That’s a Logitech K860 Ergo keyboard. Very comfortable, I had a mechanical keyboard earlier, used to get wrist pain but not on this.

Some of the stuff added along the way (in order), some months apart
  • Laptop riser
  • Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse
  • Interio 'Motion' Highback Chair
  • IKEA Trotten height adjustable table (for afternoon sessions standing up )
  • IKEA Tjena Desk Organiser
  • E243M HP monitor with inbuilt webcam and speakers
  • Couple of Stuffcool phone rests

  • USB C hub so that I do not pluck out each and every cable the days I have to go to office. Monitor webcam/mic needs yet another USB port of the machine (which isn't available)

Re: Working from home? Show us your home office

I do not have any fancy set up but my desk was really messy with all the cables, adapters, and chargers. Bought 500 Rs cable management box+ cable strap ties and routed some cables under the table by fixing couple of clamps. Now it looks much better with most of the things hidden.

Re: Working from home? Show us your home office

After few years of working from home, you learn more things about audio/video conferencing. And I noticed that not always everyone I talk to seem to hear some words/parts of the sound. This is especially the case, when the listerner is in a noisy environment. All this while, I was using the laptop mic for audio input and use a pair of earphones for listening. Headsets with mic seem to be very uncomfortable for me after an hour in most cases as I dont like the idea of something clamping my head for hours.

So decided to give my listeners a better audio experience (and esp. make myself understandable for those working in noisy environments) by upgrading the laptop mic to a dedicated external mic. And in the process of finding the right mic, I learnt quite a lot about sound, insulation, reverberation, echo, standing waves etc. and the various types of mics used for various applications. Sound or audio engineering is a field I have not digged into much in the past, but now I have a huge respect for these guys who make / measure / capture / present sounds from and around us. For the sake of brevity and sticking to the topic, I will share my upgraded home office audio setup here:

Working from home? Show us your home office-img_6957.jpg

Working from home? Show us your home office-img_6960.jpg

This is the mic I got and it can be used on a camera or a mobile too. It has a USB-C port for using with laptops, mobile phones and also a 3.5mm audio in/out port for connecting to cameras. When USB-C is connected, the 3.5mm audio port can be used in output mode to monitor the sound captured by mic instantly. The mic comes with it's own shock mount (to prevent noises while small bumps on table), windshield (to prevent plosives) and a 3.5mm cable. I got a simple tripod and usb-c cable separately. On the mic itself there are no physical buttons, but with the Rode connect & central softwares you can adjust gains and adjust some basic audio filter settings. As soon as I plugged in the mic and opened Rode central app, the mic received a firmware update. I read online that this is one of the brands, which sends out firmware updates to keep their mics up-to-date. I did some basic adjustments on a windows computer and then connected it to my main linux laptop. Unfortunately the audio engineering world seems to cater to only windows and mac users. Luckily the settings are autosaved in the mic, so once set I am done with.

So far it works good and the listeners find it much better than before. I didn't want to go overboard and sound treat my room, as that improves the audio even better. At the end of the day, I am not a sound engineer and the video conferencing services degrade your audio input anyway. So I will leave it at it.

Here is my home office post (Working from home? Show us your home office) from few months ago. I have added one more 24" monitor in portrait mode to this setup.

Re: Working from home? Show us your home office

Nice to see lots of clean setups. I spent quite a bit of time myself to create a comfortable WFH set up as well.

Here is mine:
  • Chair: Steelcase Gesture. Hands down one of the best chairs I have tried. The hands are infinity adjustable and its impossible not to find a position thats not comfortable.
  • Table: Electric glass top sit stand table with built in wireless charging pad. Useful to charge airpods for call when its noisy at home. Being able to move between standing and sitting is something I really wanted and cannot imagine going back. The electric motor with memory makes switching between the 2 modes so easy and seamless.
  • Lamp: Led table lamp with wireless charging pad
  • Speakers: Apple Homepod mini and Sonos Play 5(not in the pic)
  • Mouse: Logitech MX vertical
  • Keyboard: Logitech K270 (Looking at upgrading this but a wireless one)
  • Laptop: Macbook Air M1 2020 (Genuinely surprised how powerful this is)
  • Dock: HyperDrive Dual 4K for M1/M2 hard line to 1.5Gbps fiber home connection.
  • Displays: Dual Asus 24' VG248QG these can be changed to portrait mode based on necessity and are great!
  • Mini Deadpool sitting on top of my screen working : Priceless

Read on to find out the story. During one of my work days at our site, the control room guys have received few ergonomical chairs to test out for upgrading their facility. I had a chance to sit on one of those weird looking stools for a few days while I used to go there. It left me a very good impression, because at the end of the day I felt like I have not sat for a long day. But was more like moving around the whole day. This felt even better than my Mirra2. So I put my Mirra2 for sale and got my McPherson strut seat few months ago.

Since I started using it, the whole experience is an eye-opener how moving around even while seated is a great method to be relaxed and not constrained. In the last couple of months, I have never missed the backrest, handrests or whatever supports that Mirra2 provided. My wife was also using it at home office when I worked from office. She too got very impressed and replaced her work chair with another McPherson Strut seat.

The commercial name of this thing is called Swopper and I feel bad for not coming across this thing this all these years! Such a good seating solution. Thanks to it's designer.

How this thing works:

How to adjust:

One can adjust the height, tension of the spring for up and down motion and the tension of the sidewards (fore-aft-right-left 360 degrees) motion.

So this Swopper is not new and it is about 25 years old. Ask these guys what they used to sit on in their garage when then invented Google :

Re: Working from home? Show us your home office

Hi guys, I work from home every Friday and finally found something to complete my workstation. We were about to start demolition on a fitout site here close to Belfast when I came across this beautiful pair of grilles and couldn't dare to bin them.

Hope you like the look almost as much as I do 😁
