re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

  • Kannada - SRWU
  • Havyaka - SU (Mother Tongue - A different dialect of Kannada spoken in few areas of Dakshina Kannada)
  • Tulu - SU
  • Hindi - R
  • Sanskrit - RW (3rd language in High School)
  • Telugu - R (The script is almost same as Kannada and hence I can read most of the stuff in Telugu)

re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

1. Bengali- Mother tongue and medium of study till 10th
2. Assamese- Grew up in Assam. Most of my friends are also Assamese so haven't lost touch with it even after moving to Delhi-NCR 15 years ago. Except for a couple of alphabets, Assamese script is same as Bengali
3. Hindi- Learnt in School but can't write it anymore. It has been the main language of communication in my workplaces. I still struggle with gender of nouns.
4. English- Can it be called Indian language? I think so.

However small, there is an Anglo-Indian community in India. Their mother tongue is English. That makes English an Indian language!

Besides, it is a de-facto link language in India. It is the medium of instruction for most of us. I suppose there will be more people in India who know English than the USA and UK combined!

re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Bengali - since it's my mother tongue. Though only read it for 2 years.
English and Hindi: Defacto languages of choice for me.

Kannada/Haryanvi/Punjabi/Marathi :: Little little to make people understand me I can get by with some sign language and a few words in these languages on my travels.

re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Apart from English, i can understand, speak, read and write in Punjabi and Hindi.

I just realized, of the three languages, i speak Hindi the most though write in it the least. I am least comfortable conversing in Punjabi but read it the most. Nowadays, while i dont speak English the most, yet of the three, i am most fluent speaking, reading and writing in it!

BTW, I see many Punjabi speakers. When you say you can read, do you mean Gurmukhi?

When British ruled India for 150 years, they made it an Indian language. In fact, when my grandfather was in highschool, they would be fined quarter anna if they spoke anything other than English. This was more than 100 years ago. It is also ours now. It is the only common language that binds all Indian states. That is why we in the Indian car forum communicate in English.

Come on, if we start listing dialects, every language has many such dialects. In the same area, there is Kundapura Kannada and an even more obscure form of interior Kundapura dialect that even Kundapura people can't understand. My FIL's older sister speaks only that, and I can't understand half the things she says.

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Friends & family from USA / Europe are always amazed when I tell them how many languages we speak.

Gujarati: My mother tongue. Can speak reasonably well, but not read / write.

Hindi: Speak very well, and can read too (but not write).

Marathi: Basic. Can understand someone speaking & manage a few words myself. It's an asset if you live in MH.

I generally suck at learning new languages. In school, I was a constant fail in the mandatory French class. I got the passing mark of 35 / 100 in the 10th finals.

Sanskrit anyone?

Can understand it well, also used to write extensively in school days but lost the touch now!

Apart from it, for regular days, it is Hindi & English (Both read/write/speak). I can understand Punjabi but not read/write it.

.
Yes, Punjabi has two scripts Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi. Gurmukhi is used in India and Shahmukhi (Urdu) in Pakistan.
