Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Am surprised to see people listing 10-12 languages. How do you even remember vocabulary? For me even English becomes Tanglish (Tamil+English) most of the times.

However I am from TN. Born, brought up, studied and working here in Tamilnadu. So it's only Tamil and English. I can understand and speak a bit of French as well. That's all, but I somehow manage to communicate to people wherever I go only with these languages. Been to many states in India and European countries alone .

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Nice to see people know so many languages! A bit overwhelming.

Mine:
1. Tamil - SWURT (Not my mother tongue. But born & brought up in Tamil heartland.)
2. English - SWURT (Most work related conversations & thinking. Can articulate my thoughts easily in English.)
3. Malayalam - SWUR (Had to communicate with workers in remote Kerala in 80s & early 90s - no phones then, had to write letters & read them, in Malaylam! )
4. Telugu - SU (Mother tongue. Improved a bit after exposure in Hyderabad & Tirupati briefly).
5. Hindi - RU (Around 50%)

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Nice thread!

Here goes my list, let's there be some from eastern part of India:

1) English : Read, write and speak

2) Hindi :Read, write and speak

3) Bengali :Read and speak (Mother's tongue) , thats a shame for me personally.

4) Assamese : Read (same as bengali script) and speak

5) Nepali : Understand 80% and cannot speak

6) Punjabi : Understand 90% and speak 50%

7) Arunachali dialects: There are nearly 25 major dialects in Arunachal and I have learned and kind of forgot most of them during my 22 years of stay there. Every couple of years, my Dad used to move to a different district and the dialects changed drastically.

8) Nagamese : A language spoken in Nagaland for general conversation and is a mix of assamese/ naga/ hindi. Understand 80% but can speak in half assamese to make them understand.

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Let me copy paste from my old resume

1. English - read, write, speak
2. Tamil - read, write, speak
3. Malayalam - read, speak (had to learn, was working in Kerala)
4. Hindi - read, write, speak

My wife’s includes all of the above and
1. Kannada - read, write, speak
2. Telugu - read, speak

Now this is very useful especially during road trips across south India

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Being a Keralite raised in Mumbai, my list is short-
1) English
2) Hindi
3) Malayalam
4) Marathi (Read, Understand Only)

Now, I had to learn Malayalam because I was in Kerala for 5 years and my school wouldn't promote me if I failed in Malayalam.

My next goal is to properly learn Marathi. I can read the text and understand, but might as well go all the way and learn the language.

Re: How many Indian languages do you speak / understand?

Speak, Write, Read, Understand:
- Hindi
- English
- Marathi

If dilalects can be included:
Speak, Understand
- Haryanvi
- Konkani (Marathi)

I had learnt some basics of Azerbaijani three years ago during a six month stay in Baku. Had started understanding bits and pieces. A lot of words were similar to Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi ! Now, I've completely forgotten it
