New Delhi: Ratan Tata is all set to sweeten the offer for his dream car Nano. The Rs 1 lakh ‘people’s car’, the world’s cheapest, is all set to take you on a long drive as Tata now plans to work on improving fuel efficiency of the vehicle to offset the record oil price.
“New variants of the Nano are under development to meet the environmental and fuel price challenges,’’ Tata told shareholders and said production of the car is on schedule and it would be out towards year-end. At present, Nano promises a fuel efficiency of almost 20 km per litre.
“The company’s new plant for the Nano in Singur, West Bengal, is expected to go into operation in the last quarter of this calendar year,’’ Tata said amid reports that the upcoming facility is still facing trouble. Tata said apart from generating “unprecedented’’ response in the domestic market, the car was also getting “enormous interest’’ in foreign markets. The new variants would also be developed keeping in mind the requirement of several international markets, he added.
However, he hinted that maintaining the breakthrough price tag was a challenge, especially due to “enormous and unprecedented increase in material costs like steel and tyres’’.
Tata said the new fiscal would be full of challenges for the company as higher fuel prices and tighter money supply with higher interest rates will negatively impact both commercial vehicle and passenger car sales. “In addition, the company will have to manage the completion of the Singur plant and introduction of Nano in the market,’’ he said.
On the company’s recently-concluded acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford, he said they would add to global scale, profits and visibility to Tata Motors “enabling it to take its place in the global auto industry as a credible international automobile company’’.

KOLKATA: Tata Motors is looking to use the e-commerce platform to market Nano, which is slated to hit the road by early-October. The company, it is learnt, will start online bookings for Nano from September.

The company has no immediate plans to issue any new Nano dealership. Instead, it has asked its 190-odd existing dealers nationally to upgrade their stores to create an ambience for Nano.

Sources said Tata Motors will use autojunction.com, an e-commerce portal from mjunction Services, to market the Rs 1-lakh small car. mjunction Services is a 50:50 JV between SAIL and Tata Steel, and specialises as a business process improvement company. “In all probability, TML will create a site of its own for online booking of cars as well,” sources added.

When contacted, Tata Motors spokesperson Debasis Ray told ET: “It is premature to comment on modes that Tata Motors will adopt for marketing or bookings of Tata Nano. The company has not made any decision or announcement. As for distribution, Tata Motors has a nationwide network of dealers, which naturally will be deployed for Tata Nano as well.”

The company can reduce the distribution cost by deputing one dealer to deliver the responsibility of online bookings in each city. The buyers can show their booking copy and drive away the car having the dealer as a mere point of contact. The company will directly send the list of bookings to the dealer so that the task becomes easier for him.

The international media is predicting the launch of compressed air Nano by next year. The TATAs are silent on this aspect.

MUMBAI: Nano, India’s most eagerly-awaited car, might be launched without much fanfare. Blame it on inflation as Tata Motors and other carmakers are slashing or are in the process of reducing spending on publicity and advertising.

Well this should not make much difference to sales of TATA NANO because I belive the car has already discused so much between all indian's.

NEW DELHI: Tata Motors will strap on a diesel engine developed by German powertrain maker FEV on the soon-to-debut Nano. According to sources in the auto industry, the small diesel engine will have fuel injection systems developed by Bosch, but the rest of the platform is being developed by Tata Motors and FEV.
FEV is an independent engine and powertrain systems research, design and development company, headquartered in Aachen, Germany. The Nano engine is not its only connection with India. M&M is also working with FEV for its electric-diesel hybrid Scorpio.
Although Tata Motors has so far only showcased its petrol Nano — kitted with a 623 cc, two-cylinder, MPFI engine with four-speed manual transmission — it has already announced a diesel and even a hybrid are in the pipeline. At its premiere in the Auto Expo earlier this year, Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata had said: “By and large we’ve always been a diesel company so we will have a diesel version that will follow this variant soon after.”
According to sources in the auto industry, the car will sport the world’s first 800 cc, turbo charged, CRDi diesel engine. The diesel powertrain Nano will probably roll out in 2009. While Bosch is working on the CRDi system for the Nano, Honeywell Turbo India is working on the turbo charger. When contacted a Tata Motors spokesperson refused to comment.
Sources say the 800 cc, turbo charged, CRDi diesel engine will be two-cylinder and crank out at least 30% more mileage compared to 800 cc petrol cars. Given that the smallest diesel engine in India right now is the 1.3 litre Fiat multijet CRDi engine that Suzuki has strapped on to the Swift and both Tata and Fiat will use in its future models, the Rs 1 lakh car will offer at least 40% better fuel efficiency than any small diesel currently available.
The turbo-charged CRDi diesel engine on the Nano would mean that it won’t be an unsophisticated ‘naturally aspirated’ engine like earlier cheaper diesels in India. In technology and sophistication terms it will be no less than the Swift diesel or the Getz diesel or even the Fiesta, Fusion, Verna, Logan and other new generation diesel models currently available.
Though popular earlier, naturally aspirated diesels are now virtually extinct in India. Because they are not Euro 4 compatible which will be the mandated emission norm by 2010, companies have been replacing naturally aspirated diesels with turbo charged CRDi diesel engines.

I am really interested in Nano's performacne now.
ACI this month mentions about the 800cc two cylinder diesel that Fiat is developing.
I am sure that diesel engine is going to propel Nano to new heights. Crdi means that the performance should be good and mostly mathching the petrol one.

Wow a 0.8L turbocharged clean diesel engine in an equally small car is a great news for tree huggers and Al Gore.

On a serious note, they should encourage such powertrains in other countries as well.

Yeah great job by Tata on that one. A small displacement turbocharged diesel engine is what India needs.

First of all let the basic NANO come.

Not only india but whole world is keeping a eye on this car still i belive there are lot of query's are there aboult this model. (Safty my first concern) then how tata will manage the order book and supply of the car that is the bigest questation.

Once they are settle with the car then only we can think of a diesel NENO.

engine is not from Bosch. Bosch supplies only crdi pump. engine is from German firm FEV. it seems mahindra is also working with the same firm for its electric Hybrid scropio

What the hell is the matter with TATA and M&M? Why do they have to choose the same suppliers to work on their engine? First AVL and now this! Can they not find separate suppliers in the whole wide world?
